Sir Peter Wright has expressed a desire to produce a new production of Swan Lake which, when you consider the outstanding quality of his Giselle, sounds like a very sensible idea to me.

Alice is being performed at Christmas in place of Nutcracker. I can't imagine they will risk 22 performances of it so another ballet (or ballets) would be essential. Just pray that it isn't Beatrix Potter!!

Dances at a Gathering would be more than welcome at any time,as would Robbins' Goldberg Variations. A forlorn wish for Vienna Waltzes which sadly will never happen until the Strauss estate eases it's stringent ruling on performance outside of the USA. My repeated suggestion of a revival of Liebeslieder Waltzer will undoubtedly continue to fall on deaf ears, but I shall continue to hope,as I do for Bugaku. Four Temperaments is overdue for revival, as is Ballet Imperial.

Longing for a revival of The Two Pigeons appears to be a lost cause and just more whistling in the wind. Although that, coupled with Les Patineurs would team up nicely with Alice over the festive season.

Symphonic Variations ought never to be out of the rep,and I would be happy to see revivals of Ashton's Jazz Calendar or his Sinfonietta.

As for MacMillan's works I would wish for The Invitation (as always),Symphony and Baiser de la Fee,the latter two preferably with their original designs.

Some Mark Morris would be a lovely addition to the rep, especially Drink to me Only should he decline to create something new.

And finally,Tudor's The Leaves are Fading,Shadowplay,Dim Lustre and Pillar of Fire, the latter pair I believe never performed by the RB although BRB have danced Pillar. Sad no longer to have Mara Galeazzi to dance the lead though.

Wishful thinking? Mostly,sad to say.

A Peter Wright Swan Lake - I could go for that (even though I like the current one).

With you on Potter!!! shudder....

Also with you re Symphonic Variations. Utter bliss.

Mijosh, I've cut your list down a bit :)

4Ts is more overdue than Ballet Imperial, I think, but yes, agree.  I wanted to see The Invitation again, but had had Benjamin particularly in mind for the part.  Not sure how my other favoured candidates would do in it now given how much time has passed.  Agree about "Drink to Me", unless ENB are going to revive it.  (Talking about ENB revivals, would love to see Hampson's Double Concerto again too from somebody.  Wonder if he has it in mind for Scottish Ballet?)

I think Ed Watson said fairly recently that he'd relish the chance to revisit Shadowplay (and, I suspect, Different Drummer, but I don't see that happening).  I've not been a fan of The Leaves are Fading in the past, but willing to give it another try.

I think one of the things I've found most depressing about the RB, well, this century, say, is that they've had some really marvellous artists in the company and I've been longing for maybe a decade to see Ballet A revived for Ballerina B, for example, and now most of them are no longer there, still not having had the opportunity to try (or re-visit) those roles.  I hope this wasting of opportunities isn't something which is going to continue.

Would love to see Two Pigeons again!! Years since have seen that. I love almost anything by Jerome Robbins......especially Dances at a Gathering. Otherwise Mijosh agree pretty much with everything you've said but would also love Month In the Country to be on again probably my favourite one act ballet just about how about that with Marguerite and Armand......though have noticed Maryinski doing this with Diana in August so this will be a definite trip for me!!

I would have liked to see a triple bill of Léonide Massine’ ballets. “Choreartium” was mentioned earlier. More can be chosen from “Les Présages”, “Gaîté Parisienne”, “Symphonie Fantastique”, “Le Beau Danube”, “Le Tricorne”, etc. Always with beautiful music. The RB can provide a very good cast for these ballets.

And Serge Lifar's “Suite en Blanc”. Dreams, dreams...

Edited: Added Lifar.

What I'd like most would be to see the company using the Linbury to show some of the gems from its back-catalogue which wouldn't come over well in the big theatre.

Also, with all the talented young men they seem to have, I'd like to see Balanchine's Donizetti Variations here.

I have asked about this before and was told that it would not be possible as there is not enough time to rehearse etc. as the dancers are required for main stage productions and dropping main stage shows in favour of the Linbury is a no-go.  Also, interest in the historic pieces is not sufficient to fill the Linbury.

I can't answer your query Fonty but of course BRB have performed Two Pigeons (wonderfully) on a regular basis in recent years.

And I am always in the audience when I get the chance, Janet.  Such a terrific ballet, no idea why the London based company refuses to do it.

And another question - what do they use the Linbury for?  I've never been in it, is it used on a regular basis for something?  Love the idea of pieces being performed there that don't suit the main opera house.

Edited to add I also agree about Double Concerto - loved it.

Yes,I would add Ashton's Les Illuminations and Daphnis & Chloe to my previous list, plus Scenes de Ballet which is almost as essential as Symphponic Variations.

I would really love to see Frankie Hayward and James Hay in The Invitation ( though, once again,we're missing the wonderful Mara for the wife) and in Two Pigeons.

Well you will not be surprised to hear that I will be visiting the Linbury for the first time in May to see Northern Ballet.  Looking at the Linbury programme there is some really interesting stuff coming up if it wasn't so expensive for me to travel to London these days.  I would definitely go for Headspace Dance and anything by Ballet Black.

So right, Dave.  Peter Wright did a wonderful version of Lake for Swedish Ballet and I would love to see him let loose on the RB's current version.  It's not that dreadful (which is why it sells so well) but needs some of the fussiness in acting (a drunken tutor at an Imperial Court AND a Crown Prince hitting people's bottoms with his sword?!), costumes and lighting generally streamlined, cleaned-up and made more coherent. (But please no more leading men in black tights and stygian darkness).

I'd also like another opportunity to see Symphonic Variations, Scenes de Ballet and other Ashton shorter pieces from the past.  As previously mentioned, there's a huge back catalogue of his work which hasn't been seen in the last decade or longer.

Is it certain there will be no 'Nutcracker' Christmas 2014? I am interested to know how we can see the calendar that far ahead. Is there some hidden part of the ROH website? Wouldnt surprise me.....though it does seem a bit better now.

Thank you

Graham

As I mentioned above, Kevin O'Hare has said publicly that RB will not be doing Nutcracker this Christmas (2014).

Some other people who post on here know dancers and that's where they get their information from.  I, however, do not publish information that I am given confidentially.

I thought the Royal Swedish Ballet took Sir Peter's BRB version?

The BRB version is by far and away my favourite traditional version of Swan Lake.

I haven't seen the BRB's version so I don't know.

What I particularly liked about the Swedish production (which I saw on TV) was the opening sequence showing the funeral of Siegfried's father.  It established the situation at the royal court and made clear the pressure on the Prince to marry.  Another nice detail was using the national dances in the ballroom scene to introduce the different princesses.  I always thought it quite strange to have all of them in identical dresses, hairstyles etc. as in the RB version.   How on earth could anyone choose one of them when they were virtually interchangeable?

Does the current BRB production have these details or are there any other 'traditional' versions which are like this?

I would love to see Two Pigeons in London again, I've enjoyed the performances I've seen in Birmingham but it would be nice to see some of the present RB dancers in the roles too.  On a double bill with Symphonic Variatons perhaps.

How about reviving Massine's Mamzelle Angot for Osipova?  She would be perfect in the title role with Steven Macrae as the Barber and Sarah Lamb as the aristocrat.  I'd like a Sylvia revival too and some earlier MacMillan such as Images of Love and the cheerful (admit it, that's rare), Four Seasons.

Another vote here for a new Swan Lake.

I wish that some of the lesser known MacMillan ballets could be seen again. I really enjoyed his version of the Four Seasons to the Verdi music. It would be lovely to see that again.

In answer the Swedish Swan Lake, that is the BRB version which starts with the coffin procession.

A 2014-15 leak on the ROH website has just been reported by a ballet fan on Twitter. The following appeared under "you may be interested in":

Alice (4 Dec- 16 Jan)

Onegin (24 Jan - 27 Feb)

Swan Lake

Interesting. I hope if Manon is on, it is on this year and not in 2015. It's been too long........

Mine too - but a plaudit, that should go equally to Galina Samsova.

Symphonic Variations & Two Pigeons would make a wonderful double bill as suggested by MAB .

I would love to see Shadowplay revived. Knight Errant is another Tudor work I have read about and would like to see given a new lease of life.

Actually, (as a Londoner) I would prefer it if there were not too much overlap between the RB's and BRB's (non-warhorse) rep as BRB perform in London twice a year. If BRB performs Two Pigeons regularly there is no need for the RB to perform it. I thought that BRB was very good in Two Pigeons and Symphonic Variations; the company seems to have made the Ashton rep a specialism.

My wishes for next season include, so far as full lengths are concerned, Manon, Mayerling (although probably realistically too soon, given that it was on at the end of last season) and a full length Ashton (preferably Cinderella or Fille).  I would love another full evening Ashton mixed bill of maybe Rhapsody (yes, I know, just been done but I really can’t wait two or three more seasons to see Franscesa Hayward and James Hay dance this again!), Symphonic Variations and Month in the Country (filmed for DVD, of course!).  I’d also love to see Winter Dreams, Symphony in C and/or Theme and Variations, and Asphodel Meadows.  It seems that there will be a new Liam Scarlett work for the main stage (so one of my wishes has already been fulfilled!).  I’ll be pleased to see Don Q coming back (I thoroughly enjoyed it first time around), and also (if hints are correct) Onégin (although every time I think of this, I feel terribly sad that there’ll be no Alina and Johan, or for that matter Alina/Bennett Gartside in Prince Gremin pdd … but I suppose I’ll have to get over it).  And, for the record, I’m always pleased to see Swan Lake as I love RB’s production and would hate it to change (don’t care if I’m in a minority!).

A quick question, but which of the current crop of Principals has danced Tatiana before?

I have seen both Tamara and Alina in the role.   I believe Morera did it, although I missed that one.  I presume Nunez has?
