  1. No auditions for us this coming year as DD is off to vocational 6th form but she has drawn up a lost for 18, so we are going to do all the open days.
  2. Another recommendation for Love Lily, DD loves hers from there.
  3. In Year 5 DD was doing 45 mins classes 2 x ballet, tap, modern. An hour musical theatre plus 30 ballet class at school. She also trained with local swimming club for 3 hours a week, should have been 4 but we couldn't make one. By the end of year 5 I made her choose between dance and swimming, she simply couldn't do both. Dance classes stayed pretty much the same for the next few years, only difference was ballet increased to hour long classes. In year 9 she changed dance schools and everything increased. At the start of Year 11 she was dancing 7 days a week for about 17 hours. This did vary as various other shows, festivals also took place. Somehow she also managed to take 9 GCSEs ( she took one in Year 9 ) and is off to vocational school in September. This took a huge amount of juggling and at times relying on other parents to bring her home but it was what she wanted. She kept up with her academic work without being asked to. So my advice is take it step by step. See how things go at the new school, let her settle in and take her lead. Personally I would let her do as many different classes as possible until her teacher says she needs to do increase her ballet classes because of the grade she is in. Let her enjoy her new school, make friends and have fun. Maybe arrange to talk to her teachers towards half term once they have got to know her. Its a hard one but I don't think there is a right way or wrong way.
  4. I have one like that, she stickers on suede patches
  5. We were met by current students. DD's group spent time with them as 5 of them are there all summer working towards Genee. They all performed at the end of week performance with the summer school. They were beautiful.
  6. When DD was in year 10 she knew she wanted to do something with dance probably teach. So as she entered year 11 she looked at 6th forms to do A levels which would lead on to University, but most likely RAD BA course. After her mocks in November it all changed. She was predicated A/A* across the board and she pretty much got those results in her mocks, with the exception of Maths and English Lang/Lit which are silly numbers but something changed and she knew she wanted to give dance and performance a go. We went to see the deputy head in January and talked it through. She agreed with DD that A levels will always be there but her body only has a limited time. And has fully supported her during yr 11 with her academic studies and her commitment to dance both in and out of school. This really helped DD get through yr 11 and we will always be very grateful to her for her support. So in September she starts a two year Extended Diploma in Performing Arts -Dance ( equal to 3 A levels ) and plans to apply at 18. She didn't feel ready to apply or go away at 16, so is giving herself 2 more years at home plus we left it too late for most places. Not really answering your question but telling the story of how we went from wanting to dance but thought she wasn't not good enough so going to teach to simply wanting to dance and being determined to give it her best shot.
  7. DD is currently sat by me feeling v frustrated because she has the most awful cold, desperately wants to be working/ stretching etc but she doesn't have the motivation because she doesn't have any energy. She has had an extremely busy 12 months both academically ( yr11) and with her dance, it would seem her body has now said STOP and that's exactly what she is doing. Yes I know it's hard, especially when you are so passionate but you really do need to listen to your body. We all need to rest and take it easy. There is nothing wrong in that, usually it means you come back strand better. Please take a bit of time out, watch some rubbish on TV , read, listen to music, eat whatever you feel like, relax and you will recover much quicker.
  8. At one stage DD's feet were nearly a size different from each other, we were potentially looking at buying 2 pairs of pointe shoes in different sizes as it wasn't possible to mix and match. So in my experience the answer to your question is no it isn't possible but I may be wrong. The reason for this is that supplies would be left with random different sizes, styles which could potentially be un saleable.
  9. Reed Flutes is a really fun part. They wear brown tutus with yellow and red sashes. In Etudes they wear blue or gold - that's all from DDs memory.
  10. I would speak to his current teacher and see what she says. If she really can't put the classes on he needs, ask her where she would recommend.
  11. I second Just Ballet! plus Dancia International in Reading ( also Crowthorne and Windsor ) These three are owned by the same family and are all lovely, DD won't go anywhere else for other than Dancia International Reading for Pointe Shoe fitting.
  12. Thanks BlueLou, I will take them out of her pile. Maybe see you on Sunday, although I am dropping and running as I need to catch a flight.
  13. DD is currently sorting her stuff out for Ballet West her first summer school of summer 2017, I am sure she has a bedroom floor! She is wondering if she needs her character shoes- any of you who have previously been does she need them ? They aren't on the list and she hasn't used them since she took her Grade 8 but she is convinced she 'might' need them. We are flying up to Glasgow so I really don't want her filling her bag with unnecessary shoes when I could be add extra snacks etc
  14. Amy Starr is based in Newbury,She is an ex dancer. DD goes to her on a regular basis.
  15. If you were my DD I would definitely be saying do it in flats. As has already been said most of the audience won't know the difference, the floor isn't ideal etc. This is a wonderful opportunity to shine, I know being en pointe is very important but in this case it's about the performance. Make sure you have a beautiful costume and enjoy the whole experience. Doing it the way you were taught will help you with your nerves because you will be nervous, it's only natural, which will ultimately help you to wow your audience. Enjoy the moment.
  16. DD has done two masterclasses day of contrast with them, Nutcracker in December and Slerping Beauty in May. She loved both of them and is booked on this already. From the info we have it is going to be very intense but she is really looking forward to it. Both Josephine and Raymond are lovely people, who make you feel relaxed instantly.
  17. DD is 16 and starting vocational school in September. This year she has danced Monday, Wednesday,Friday evenings. Saturdays have been a mixture of dance and music ( her other passion) but all day and Sunday afternoons. Plus GCSE dance at school. She has used her free periods at school and thought nothing of working after classes, during breaks. She has done EYB twice and other dance shows or music concerts. We have just worked out she hasn't had a half term this entire academic year. She is exhausted but I can not praise her enough for the way she has handle year 11. She is lucky because she is naturall bright and has had the most amazing support from her academic school and friends. What i I am saying is, yes it's possible to do that much but have the correct support in place. Plus it's not only your DD that needs it, your own personal friends and family need to understand the commitment and the impact it will have on all of you.
  18. One of DD's dance teachers got into Elmhurst Upper school without having attended vocational school. It was about 15 years ago.
  19. Not first hand but know someone who did. Has to come home every Friday and back Monday, even if they had Sunday rehearsals. They were happy enough but I think would describe more as lodging with food. Things may well have changed as this was a couple of years ago.
  20. DD did a masterclasses last summer with Michaela DePrince at Danceworks. It was fantastic but a word of warning the classes are big, the studios get very hot and it will be very busy because their International Ballet Academy Summer Show is on It was possible to watch but you were literally stood watching through a glass window, no seats and very little room. Anyone that knows Danceworks will know it's very small. Having said all that she had an amazing two hours, sadly she can't do any of them this year, if she could she would. I just looked at the picture they took and there were 30 in the class.
  21. That is basically it. Best thing to do is look at their websites. Both are fantastic experiences and require commitment from both parents and DC
  22. Aurora's friends do one dance en pointe and one in flats. As you say no matter what part she gets she will have a great time. DD audioned for EYB last night and is going to be in Coppelia in October, her 4th production with them. She was 1 of 8 in quiet possibly the best senior scholarship group I have seen ( DD has auditioned 6times) Sadly she didn't get it but we could all tell they couldn't decide and kept asking them to do more and more, which I have never seen.
  23. Very well done to your DD, what a great way to end her time with EYB. DD is auditioning tomorrow- this will be her 6th audition and if she gets in her 4th production
  24. Currently have an 18 year old niece with anorexia. She was at boarding school but as soon as her parents realised what was going on they bought her home. Two years on she is no where near recovered but they are all learning to live with it and support her. The thing that really helped was her parents went to counselling to help them understand. She has none of her own teeth and went vegan so she can control her food. It's dreadfully sad, especially as she is very disillusioned about life, very wrapped up in a world that doesn't exist but she thinks it should. As Hairbelles said nothing absolutely nothing is worth sacrificing your mental health.
