  1. Yes illness is frowned upon. DD turned up a while ago very ill, they eventually suggested she could leave but it was at the discretion of the staff and I am not sure Miss Lewis knew especially as I promised DDwould be back the next day. Even if you are injured you are expected to be at all the rehearsals, watching, unless your injury means you will not be able to do the performances. Basically you are treat as you would be in a professional company and you are expected to behave as if you were in one. Miss Lewis does not take passagers.
  2. As previously said only in exceptional circumstances are you allowed to miss any rehearsals. However Saturday rehearsals don’t normally start before 2pm but it is one of the conditions that you agree to when you accept your place. It is very intense and your absence can will have a knock on affect.
  3. If that’s the case I would really think about putting her in the senior audition, especially given her grade and height. That way she won’t be the tallest.
  4. If she is Grade 6 they will more than likely put her in the senior audition regardless of her age. When it comes to the production and casting they have various age groups. DD has only ever done senior auditions but has friends who have done both and they have all said the senior audition is harder, as you would expect.
  5. What a roller coaster you have been on. So glad the operation went well and wishing him a very speedy and successful recovery. I have decided that there are two types of dance teacher, the old fashioned do or die, your not my current favourite so I am not giving you the part etc or the kind gentle loving type
  6. I totally understand your frustration but you are also at an important stage of your academic school is a change in schools going to have an affect on that ? Also remember you can’t take any of your Festival dances with you if they have been choreographed by your current teachers. Try and look at the whole package rather than your Ballet. I know that’s hard and we all know how badly you want to dance full time but don’t rush this. Having said all that DD including all her dance at her academic was doing over 15 hrs a week in yrs 10&11 BUT it was hard work and she was physically and mentally exhausted once she had finished her GCSEs. I know she wouldn’t have got through it all with out the support we as a family gave her. Please make sure you talk all of this through with your parents. DD also moved dance schools in yr 9, and it was the best thing she ever did especially as it meant she in creased her hours steadily.
  7. DD has changed the make of flats she wears so we have the following for sale : 2 x Pro1c canvas Split sole size 5M ( uk size 3 ) 1 x Silhouette Split sole size 5M ( uk size 3 ) £10 each PM for photos are more details.
  8. DD has just finished her 4th production with EYB. As always she has had an amazing time, learnt a lot and made great new friends. The commiment is 10 days of 6 hour rehearsals either over weekends ( Friday, Saturday, Sunday) or the holidays depending on when the performances are. Performance weekend is Thursday evening, Friday afternoon and evening and the same on Saturday. You are expected to attend all rehearsals and it’s is very much frowned up if you don’t, even if you are injured! It is intense, each rehearsal starts with a hour/hour and a half long class and then rehearsals. The audition is a class. You are in rows of 10 and each row performs the exercise to the panel, the exercises get hard and more complicated as the audition goes on. There can be over 100 auditioning in both the seniors and juniors, so 50places for juniors and 50 for seniors. Towards the end a group will be selected for potential scholarships and the boys do some group work. You are told on the night. Clara is played by one of the younger girls not a senior.

    Year 11

Gin and wine for you if DD is looking or is exhausted take the day off school. At DDs prom she was awarded the hat that said “most likely to miss Friday afternoon Biology “ She got an A ...... Tell school her plans, be open and honest but don’t take no for an answer. We were completely honest, told we were mad and wasting a good brain etc etc At speech day last week all the staff commented on how well DD looks and how happy she is. Not quiet an apology but close to it. Good luck it is quiet possibly the worst year.
  10. DD went through this last year. Her academic school know within the first few weeks of Year 11 that we were looking elsewhere. It was made easier because if she had chosen to do A levels two of the ones she wanted to do they didn't offer ( dance and English Language!) They were fully supportive and gave her all the time off she needed, all the staff were informed and kept up to date. It made it much easier even though some of the staff didn't approve they still helped her. Results day was the most interesting because she got straight A/A* was one top in her year but isn't doing A levels, some of the staff simply blanked her .......
  11. DD looked at it but is going into full time vocational 6th form instead however a friend of hers is going and looking forward to it.
  12. Both schools DD she has been at have had pianist. It is a luxury and she knows she is very lucky. He doesn't do all her classes so she is able to switch between live music and a recording which all her teachers have said is a good thing to be able to do, in other words they need to be able to switch from tempo to tempo without thinking about it. I can see the argument for a cd in all exams but you can say the same for music exams - in DD's grade 8 Cello the accompanist who was her schools director of music, had to play one piece v differently to the way he had played it for another girl because DD had interpreted it her way - they both got the same marks. They were able to put their stamp on it which wouldn't have happened if the accompanying music was on cd.
  13. Dancia also has branches in Reading, Dachet, Crowthorne. It is the only place DD will go to.
  14. I agree with taxi4ballet. i know they all get excited and it's what they dream of but too early can cause so many problems and can ultimately put them off completely.
  15. Schools as a whole don't take entry's for yr 11. I speak from experience, non DD was very ill in year 10, she missed approximately half the school year. We needed to get her closer to home so started investigating. We were lucky her old school took her back for year 11, if they hadn't she would have redone year 10. The ONLY reason they said yes was because she had been in the Junior School and therefore they knew her. It was hard work as she changed exam boards , some subjects she was unable to do the rest she had to catch up on. Thankful she is natural bright and determined but I simply would not recommend this route unless absolutely necessary. Having just had DD go through yr 11, juggling academics and dance has been tough. She was physically and mentally exhausted, and is only just starting to recover having put 110% into both.
  16. DD always wears one for her exams, sometimes she is asked to wear one in class. And another one here who uses scissor, needle and thread to make my own.
  17. DD has an Under Armour sports bag. It more like a large hold-all which has turned into a "Mary Poppins " bag. Nine months of continuous, daily use and it still looks like new. She does bag everything up : pointe shoe bag, soft block bag, food bag etc
  18. Such sad news, yet another icon of my childhood has passed by. ☹️
  19. One other thing please please don't ( I am sure you wouldn't) be talked into taking a load of sweets etc. It is totally unnecessary and drives me insane seeing children sat with huge bags of sweets as a bribe to make them sit still. Like Vicky I am incredibly grateful to my parents taking from a you age as our my daughters, live performances need to be respected and munching yiur way through a ton of sugar is not the way. My girls ( age 18/16) both see ice cream in an interval as a huge treat. I will jump of my soap box now
  20. My DD said there was a constant supply of food left out for them all day - fruit, bread, cereal. She took pkeanty of snacks with her but simply didn't need them. During her breaks she woukd pop into the kitchen and get some fruit etc She said they had realised they need to offer more. Apparently one of the funniest sights ( although she didn't see it because she wasn't staying in the house ) was the younger ones forming the 'toast train' every evening before they went to bed.
  21. I took DD,when she was just 7 ( 3 days after her birthday) to ROH to see Sleeping Beauty. She knew the ground rules as we started taking both of our daughters to the theatre from about 4 ( we are very lucky and have two local theatres who put on great family productions, and I come from a family that has always been involved or gone to the theatre ) She was transfixed throughput the whole performance but as it's her first time I would personally go for something relatively short, so she enjoys the whole experience.
