  1. Hello, first time post from a nervous Dad... My daughter has accepted a place at Northern Ballet School for September 2021. The euphoria of getting in is now giving way to anxiety about living away from home in the middle of Manchester at 16! Especially the accommodation, sharing the building with older students etc. So I wondered if anyone else on here has a child going there? And anyone who is there now or has been there recently who could offer any advice about the accommodation in particular - and anything else too! Many thanks.
  2. From the Company's website: With a new season just around the corner we are pleased to announce the following dancer promotions: Abigail Prudames becomes a Premier Dancer Minju Kang and Joseph Taylor both become Principal Soloists Sarah Chun and Riku Ito are promoted to Leading Soloist Lorenzo Trossello and Jonathan Hanks become First Soloists Heather Lehan becomes a Coryphée Archie Sherman becomes a Dancer We hope you will join us in congratulating these artists on their much deserved promotions. This season we also welcome two new dancers to the company, Kirica Takahashi and Katharine Lee. Following recent auditions, we'll be announcing more new joiners soon. Isabella Gasparini will also return to Northern Ballet as a Guest Artist for David Nixon OBE's Dangerous Liaisons at Leeds Playhouse. Isabella danced with us from 2007 - 2013 before joining The Royal Ballet in 2014.
  3. Hi DD has been offered a place at Tring for September (letter has just arrived!). It says though that they can’t guarantee a boarding place yet. Is this normal? Is it safe to accept a day place (we live the other end of the country)?!
  4. Hi, My son is due to start ENBS in Sept. We have looked at various places to stay but all prove very costly. Do LYH accept students under 18 years of age ? If anyone has any information on hall, hostels etc id love to hear from you.
  5. Hello all. Thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread for those of us with DCs starting at Hammond in September to share advice etc. could we please have no discussion of finance as requested by the school. We don’t want locked again 😃
  6. Hello, My DS was offered a place at ENBS, he has 17 and we are looking for a place to live in London, or a student with a similar profile to share a room (from september). We are living in Toulouse, France. Any idea, or suggestion? I only sent a mail to the Holland house http://lhalondon.com/holland-house/ for the moment. How can we contact the new students in ENBS, they should have the same problem? thanks
  7. My 18 year old daughter is starting in September on dance/musical theatre diploma. We have looked and thinking of booking the Trinity Halls for accommodation, it seems nice but I’m conscious that she may be only pupil there from the Hammond. Is anyone else staying there?
  8. Hi. My ds has got into central and is looking for accommodation. Looked at liberty plaza and liberty house and he would like to share a room with someone in liberty house. Nice place and convenient. Is anyone looking and also alternatively does anyone want a lodger! He's clean and polite! Advice please. Thank you
  9. I'm going to stay at QAH this coming year, and I wonder if any of you have any experiences with it? Thank you
  10. Hi. My daughter will be going to CBS in September and we are wondering if more people will stay at Paris Gardens or Liberty Plaza. She doesn’t know of anyone else who got accepted but it would be nice to be in the same place.
  11. Hello, DS has a place at Central . I'm looking at Liberty House (Walmsley house) as one of the options. He would be looking to share (to get the price down a bit!) Do we need to find a flatmate ourselves? Also does anyone know of any Homestay websites or where I can look?!! And the last thing the prices at IQ Paris Gardens (for a shared twin room is the price per person or room?.
  12. Hi all, I'm just trying to do some financial calculations and would appreciate any information on accommodation costs regarding upper schools. I'm interested in general costs of accommodation in Chester with regard to attending The Hammond and also Manchester with regard to attending the Northern Ballet School. I'm looking at all options ranging from student halls of residence to flat shares and bed sits. Any information from students/parents/guardians with knowledge of these schools would be fantastic.
  13. Hello, my daughter is beginning the audition process and I have some questions about the practical side of working with a company. She is currently auditioning in London. If she is offered a contract, I know the pay is very low and my biggest concern is how she will afford rent and how she will travel safely late at night after performances back to her flat. I have heard the tour bus delivers the dancers to a place where they can take night buses, but they still have to walk to their home at the other end. Rent looks terribly expensive, so I imagine her room won't be in a particularly nice area. Has anyone had experience with relocating for a company job, or helped their child locate? Thanks
  14. A few forum members have very kindly offered their advice re attending the Hammond, and as my DS is about to join year 7 - I thought it best to ask all of you (in the know) rather than aim lots of questions at any one person ???? Here goes : • do the boarding houses have Wifi ? • is it advisable to take a small laundry basket for his room? - not sure how laundry is collected. • are iPads / phones collected in at a certain time in the evening ? • do all boarders go home/leave the boarding houses on exeat weekends - or do some stay ? • are the children allowed their own snacks/tuck etc ? The list could go on ........ Sorry !! but DS has been asking a few questions & thought it would be nice to find a few answers for him (& me) and perhaps other slightly daunted DC & their parents. Thanks to anyone who can offer some pointers.
  15. Can I ask whether parents of young ballet students have had the opportunity of forming a received view about London Russian Ballet School? Our fourteen-year-old son is desperately keen on a ballet career and is very tall for his age. He believes, because male ballet stars in Russia tend to be tall, and indeed female stars do too, that he could follow in the footsteps of the likes of Xander Parrish, whose example has inspired him. But although the LRBS recruit students from overseas and from many far-flung parts of the UK and these students of course board, the school itself does not offer accommodation under its own auspices. So a young boy, away from home for the first time, would be living in a boarding house (which would be near the school apparently) on his own. And although the school says it recruits purely on ability, and grants are given according to potential, and that no student considered a good prospect would be disadvantaged financially by the fee regime, the school refuses to give out its fee structure. It says it depends on the course taken. This seems a bit mysterious to me. Is it unusual? We live a good five hours from London, and we now have the prospect of making a compulsory formal application and then taking our son up to London for a whole-day audition session involving two nights away, and then seeing how talented the school thinks our son is, without having any notion of the kind of fee we will have to pay in the end. It would seem strange to go through that whole process and only then discover the kind of financial commitment that is required. Of course other schools have no difficulty publishing their fees. What do people think about this, please?
  16. Hi, anyone know of any routes to try source accommodation for a 15 year old DD to enable attendance at ENBS Spring course - & possibly other things over next year too. Ideally to stay with another attendee so travelling to course with another/others. I cannot be there due to work commitments. As course is non residential I am trying all routes to make it possible.... have exhausted friends & family so am now asking the lovely Forum Family to see if anyone out there has the solution as am sure this is a common issue? Mobe thought I had was contributing to the AirBnB or similar cost of another dancing family booking accommodation or a commuting distance attendee whose family may have a spare room they would be happy to rent in bed & board basis? Hope it’s ok to explore this here... Thank you
  17. Hello my name is Sabrina I need a room with cooking facilities from 15 to 28 July during ENB summer school. Can you help me?
  18. Hi, I am doing a summer course at ENBS this summer during the period 15-27 July. Looking for a roommate, ideally another student in the ENBS summer program. BR, Mathilda (age 16)
  19. Hi all, I'd love some opinions on Rambert please. My dd is researching degree courses for Sept. 2019 and has always had Ballet West Scotland first on her list. However, she has recently discovered that Rambert have a degree course in Ballet and Contemporary which sounds perfect. Her goals are to eventually become a member of a Ballet Company with Contemporary under her belt. She does not want to go the Musical Theatre route, she is classical ballet all the way but she does enjoy contemporary. I would be so grateful to hear your views on this course and the school in general. We are not from the UK so funding and accommodation are mysteries to us!
  20. Dd has eventually made her decision and accepted her offer from Central so we are now looking at accommodation. I believe a lot of students stay at Liberty Living. Are there any forum members thinking of Liberty House which seems the closest to the school? All require sharing. Any insights into how you find a like minded roomie? I am quite stressed at the prospect of sorting this out as it's so important to get it right!
  21. Hi everyone, This summer (July 16-July 27) I’ll go to ENB summer course, there is someone that will take part to the summer course who’s looking for a flat to share in the school area?
  22. Does anyone have any information/guidance regarding accommodation for Laines students going at 16 ? I know they like them to live with host families for the first year but do Laines sort this out or do we the parents have to arrange this ?. I know I will get this information soon but wondering if anyone has already been through this and knows the ropes .... Thank you
  23. Hi, Currently looking for a budget friendly hotel for next weekend. DD attending ENBS Audition workshop on the Monday. We arrive at Gatwick late on Saturday, so any suggestions around Victoria Train Station area would be appreciated. Tried researching for hotels on Booking.com but with so many on the site it is challenging to know what's best. Appreciate any personal recommendations. Thank you
  24. Hi need some advice dd keen to audition for central & Elmhurst, feeling concerned that if offered a place how do they cope at 16 with cooking, cleaning etc as well as studies? Seems very young & surely at that age would need house parents for guidance, does anyone have dc at these schools? Thanks 🤔
  25. Hi dd is keen to audition for sixth form ballet courses at the major schools such as central, ENB, Elmhurst etc, I know with a degree course there are maintenance loans, but how does it work with dada funding? Thanks
