  1. Oh my goodness LearningCurve, we have been there! Sending you positive thoughts and a wish for karma to do its thing....
  2. Regarding the comment about dancers being petite - I agree, the vast majority are, even those who may be taller than many of their peers eg Zenaida Yanowsky. DD has often been referred to as petite although she is quite a way above average height. ‘Petite’ does not always mean short, despite their commonly being used interchangeably; it’s a question of frame size, which can be smaller than average whether someone is short or tall.
  3. DD has had the privilege of being taught by Brenda Last and she too commented on her huge ‘presence’. Her main teacher danced with Brenda Last and said she was the most compelling dancer there. Clearly being shorter than many or most dancers is no automatic bar to commanding a stage or classroom! TwoLeftFeet - I’m so glad your DD has grown and that you and she are feeling less anxious and I wish her a little extra height and successful auditions!
  4. Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy new year to you all!
  5. People who live in their own fantasy world and become unpleasant when challenged over their outrageous stories.
  6. Peanut68, what a perfect way to describe it. I have also witnessed dance teachers who most definitely did indeed refuse to allow cold hard facts (in dance, re body shape even if the more subjective subject of ‘sparkle’ and stage presence was ignored) to affect the rose tinted spectacles which kept a very healthy income stream coming their way for several years. Students and parents obviously want to believe the myth that hard work will make anything possible for absolutely anyone and some teachers perpetuate this because it keeps students attending and parents paying.
  7. I haven’t seen this production with Anna Rose O’Sullivan as Clara so I can’t comment on her performance, but you also mentioned Yasmine Naghdi having more opportunities to shine because of Francesca Hayward’s absence. Naghdi certainly didn’t need Hayward to be absent to shine when she danced the Rose Fairy about three years ago in the Nutcracker live cinema relay; she more than held her own in a small role alongside the main characters with Hayward as Clara and Lauren Cuthbertson as the Sugar Plum Fairy. Naghdi certainly has that indefinable ‘it’ factor and charisma.
  8. It’s very therapeutic to bash a dead pair of pointe shoes into submission for use as soft pointes - lots of stress and frustration can be released by ripping out the insoles, hammering/running car wheels over the blocks and generally attacking them. (Best to wrap them in a couple of fairly strong plastic bags first to avoid tyre prints etc....) Then wash the ribbons and clean the shoes before using calamine or similar on them 😉
  9. Harwel, I’m so very sorry you received such a repellent and hate-filled PM! Sending you virtual hugs and hoping that you can put it out of your mind xx
  10. Do the dancers playing Rudolf feel the need to change their hair colour so that they look similar to Crown Prince Rudolf though? Not sure I see the need for all Marys to be brunette if not.
  11. I’m sure every dance school is different but we have always - no doubt accidentally - attended those which assess each student and place them in the most appropriate RAD grade for them. DD has usually been with older students and that works well for her as she has always got on well with older children. Certainly as has been said grade 1 would appear to be entirely appropriate for a 6 year old even if it were strictly done on age, whereas your DD has done a trial class and been placed into grade 1 - so I wouldn’t worry at all.
  12. I was interested that Claudia Dean refers to having spoken to friends who went through White Lodge and suggests that that type of vocational school is not what she is discussing as there is a balance of academics and dance. It does seem to be the US/Aus/NZ system of extremely concentrated coaching and online schooling that comes under fire from her if started before 15. (At least that was my impression, which may of course be quite wrong.)
  13. Wishing you and Sean all the very best, Lisa! (Could he perhaps apply for the night porter post by the way? Obviously it would depend on the number of shifts and his Access course days and hours) xx
  14. Lisa, I’m so sorry about Pumpkin 😔 Wishing you all the very best in your new job! X
  15. Surely the top schools have always had a healthy mix of UK and international students? I can’t believe that White Lodge pupils would ever have thought that the Upper School would not have students coming from all over the world and from a wide range of backgrounds.
  16. I have no problem with anyone expressing any opinion they hold and no problem with anyone disagreeing with that view and explaining why. There have been passionate debates on the forum where each ‘side’ has robustly expressed firm opinions and I hope that this continues. I do however have a problem with patronising, hectoring supercilious rudeness as displayed here. Your views are just as valid as anyone else’s, ‘my dear’ Livia, but they are no MORE valid, despite your intimations (but not, I see, confirmation) of a vastly superior knowledge of ballet compared to that of anyone who disagrees with you here. If you find this forum so appallingly amateur and ill-informed in that members are daring to praise dancers or performances which you have decided are unworthy, then you don’t have to participate in its discussions.
  17. Many, many congratulations to your DD and I wish her a lifetime of happiness and great contracts! All the very best to you and your younger DDs too 🤞
  18. I don’t mean to like the fact that Osipova has withdrawn due to injury - but I am very envious of the Madrid audience on 19th July!
  19. I have signed and am sending you my heartfelt condolences, Primrose. Oliver’s story is heartbreaking and I sincerely hope that changes are made xx
  20. I would contact any scheme you’re interested in and ask whether you can still apply. The worst they can say is no and you won’t be any worse off than presently. Good luck!
  21. Even way back when I was dancing, our school usually had c 5-8 students in each RAD vocational grade (then pre-elementary etc) and about 3-6 students from other dance schools attending each of the vocational grades as these weren’t available due to lack of numbers in their own dance schools.
  22. I second that, results have never been available over the phone at the various state and private schools of which I have knowledge; in fact there has usually been an expectation that arrangements are made for each pupil to attend in person unless absolutely impossible. Obviously at a vocational school where many pupils board and may live some distance away that may have been different.
  23. The girls will all help each other I’m sure - DD said that at the summer schools she attended everyone was willing to help. It’s easier to help someone else rather than doing your own bun I think. Older students may also be willing to lend a hand and so may housemothers but obviously if your DD can practise doing the best she can with her own hair - and her friends’ hair - she will feel more confident.
