  1. Good luck everybody for the year ahead! Work hard but have some fun along the way! (This time next year it will be my turn 😖)
  2. Does she prefer ballet over everything else? Personally, I think that even an hour a week is enough if the teacher is very good, especially as she does not want a career. I would say it's up to her... If she wants more ballet and doesn't mind dropping a style, then that's good but if she likes all her styles then an hour a week is ok. If she does decide she wants ballet as a career, then vocational schools look at potential at age 11-13 and so technique doesn't quite matter as much. She can always change her mind!
  3. Finished in a record of 30 mins per shoe! I opted for a blanket stitch and think it looks rather more beautiful! It was hard though, as Russian Pointe satin appears to be superglued to box, and I have only worn them once!
  4. Hello again, thank you for all your replies! Im going to break them in slightly first so the satin is easier to cut away, as I'm a bit scared of pointe shoes and water together! It was hard the first time I had to burn the ribbons to stop the fray (it was so worth it though!) i just need need a bit of darning advice... For my previous pointe shoes I simply used a satin stitch around the perimeter of the platform, but I've heard lots of dancers use a blanket stitch or a chain stitch... Are these better? Also, I've heard many people do the whole platform (they must have a lot of time on their hand... Took me about an hour to darn one shoe just around the outside!), is this the 'best way' ?
  5. Hi all, just a quick question! Would you recommend darning the shoes before breaking them in, or breaking them in and then darning them afterwards? I'm going to sew a new pair before summer school and just wanted to know which would be better for the shoes! Thank you!
  6. For the last few days or so, I have been feeling really not-myself. To start with, I have a really horrible cold which keeps me up at night by the box of tissues, and cannot speak at all. Ever since I have caught it, everything at all physical I do (even walking up the street!) results in me breaking out into a nasty hot sheen of sweat... And I don't usually sweat at all (unless in ballet class!) I suppose the extremes of 27 degree sunshine at sports day to the flash floods and Terrential freezing rain this week haven't helped. Anyway, it doesn't seem to get better I usually do about 2.5 hours of ballet practice at home on days I don't do class, but also recently my big right toe has become throbbing with pain(from the ball of the foot to the nail)... It started excruciating but on,y when flexed, but not it is a dull ache constantly. I have festivals this weekend and really wanted to get loads of hard practice done, but I have started to lose my concentration and just stand there in another world. I'm also scared because at pointe class yesterday my ankles felt exceedingly wobbly... Maybe that is just my pointe shoes dying though... They are very old.. there has also been lots of not very nice drama at school and home... And I just feel like I want to go unconscious for the rest of eternity! What should I do? I have summer school very soon (end of July to mid August) and want to be top of my game for that, so I wanted to keep up a hard regime of daily practice over the first week, especially as I have the festivals. I've worked very hard on my technique and I just want everything to be perfect! sorry for the ultra long post, thank you in advance, ArucariaBallerina P.S I am still adoring ballet, sometimes I'm scared by how much I love it... Family were looking at me very strangely as I started crying while sat in the splits wat hing the final R+J pas de deux.... And in English when I cried listening to the music from the Nutcracker where the Prince does his mime about the Mouse King and Clara's ballet shoe rescue...
  7. Hello, when and where will your next auditions/productions be?
  8. Thank you so much everybody - flats it is! I have the perfect costume for it too (a beautiful pale pink 'floaty' dancing dress). I will try to edit the music slightly to make it more comfortable. I think everybody else is doing acrobatics/lyrical so I do hope the audience is not ballet-hating! (I don't quite understand how it is possible to hate as perfect a thing as ballet)
  9. So I have been invited to dance a solo at my schools presentation evening, and wanted to do the Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux girl variation which I learned at Easter school (I have no Balanchine training, but I do love it!) the only problem is, the only music I can find to download is either extremely fast (47 seconds) or painfully slow (59 seconds). Which would be better? Also, is it a good idea to perform en Pointe? The only thing I would have to adapt if en Pointe would be the 'lame ducks' (posé turns en dehors)... I'm not confident with them being doubles if en Pointe. It is in the school main hall, which isn't sprung but neither is it particularly slippy. (It is also not very big... Might have to turn the turns into a manège!) Please help! ?
  10. I wish there was a school that offered this where I live! Always quality of quantity I suppose though, but quantity is still good!
  11. Leading on from the first question... Has any not got into WL or Elmhurst Lower School but got into their Upper Schools?
  12. What was the old 'Advanced' exam like if the elementary was considerably hard? I'm very interested about 'older ballet' !
  13. Thank you everybody, but I have actually found everything today! Really thank you though! On the way to BRB workshop we stopped off at Dancique- my new favourite dance shop!- and found everything we could ever want! (Definitely recommend, both the BRB workshop and Dancique!)
  14. Hi all, All my ballet kit is sorted for my Moorland Associates programme from September, but also on the list it asks for Contemporary tights, Character/Spanish skirt and Character/Spanish shoes. I wondered whether any of you experienced, lovely people had any recommendations for brands, style and such like? How does sizing work? And for the shoes, is it best to have low or high heel? For ballet shoes I wear size 2, for outdoor shoes I wear 2.5 and for tap shoes I wear size 3, so what size would character shoes be? My parents would like to allow me as much growing room as possible as they cost quite a bit, but obviously buying too big would be uneconomical too. thank you in advance, Love ArucariaBallerina
  15. Same as me as for ballerinagirl ... It is Northern Associates ?
  16. Thank you for all of your input! I'm really grateful! For years I have been seeing various doctors about my height... I am absolutely perfectly normal (I mean, I'm very small, but nothing to cause it). My family do have a history of late starts, my brother was the smallest boy in the school until he was fifteen and now is 5"11... He still has stretch marks because he literally grew half a foot in a year! And my mum was small, started 'developing' at fifteen. By the way, she knows what I am posting! I did suffer with a mental disorder before... It was horrible, but over now, I promise! I have been discharged for a year now. It's just not nice when you have no reason to be tiny, I was born tall for my age in fact, and now have barely grown at all over the years really. I want to be as perfect a ballet dancer as I can be. (PS I do eat... A lot! Sitting here now eating scrambled egg on toast... And that's just a snack!)
  17. Hi, I don't know if this is in the right forum, sorry if not, but I just had some questions about weight. 1) will putting on weight make you taller? I have always always been underweight (BMI from 12 to 15 max) and always been tiny in height. My family have no history of tiny-ness, they are all average height! I was just wondering whether, if I put on weight, I would be able to grow those inches to make me not tiny! 2) I'm scared that putting on weight will make my dancing bad... What if I get flabby and chubby? What if I eat more and more and don't stop? All my hard work on developing the right muscles will go down the drain! 3) if I do put on weight, what is a healthy way to go about it? I am active and want to be as healthy as possible. My mum says that I should introduce 'unhealthy' foods more often into my diet... I've started to have a square or so of 85-90% dark chocolate a day. But I don't know whether this is a good idea! All I know is that I want to be a ballet dancer, and to grow taller but stay slender and lean! Im so sorry if this bothers anybody, I'm just getting a bit nervous! I like my life at the moment! (PS I am not ill mentally or physically)
  18. @JellyfishXxx I'm still young - I'm only 14 - but one day I really really really hope, wish, work for, dream to be a ballet dancer. I would love to dance Giselle for the Royal Ballet, but accept that, if I do 'make it' *crosses fingers and toes* that it might well be in some unknown touring company in Scandinavia dancing as a Wili for the rest of my career. I would equally still love it though. I love dancing, I want classical ballet to be my life. I started so very late, at 12, and cannot turn out so naturally as i could have if I had started years before. It is coming though, as teachers at school comment I stand like a ballet dancer! And I automatically stand straight. But it took 2 years of constant exercises and conditioning, stretching, intense lessons and practice practice practice! And it was and is such hard work, physically and emotionally. Nothing is impossible. Very very very almost impossible, but not absolute. But we're talking, if you really want classical ballet, something like two or three hour and a half-two hour ballet classes a day every day, body conditioning like Pilates and lots of stretching, holiday courses... Etc! Presuming you have a natural ballet body and a huge amount of natural flexibility, particularly in the hip joint and feet. And then, if it did happen, you would probably be in a minor or amateur company. Never give up, work as hard as possible... Read some ballet history, it's very interesting and insightful. Take inspiration from other arts- music, nature, painting... And start ballet classes now!
  19. @JellyfishXxx oh bless you. Nothing is impossible- there's a minuscule chance. Perhaps you might be the oldest starting professional ballerina? Who knows! If you work really really hard, have money and time and an exceptional teacher(s)...and prodigious natural talent and passion. Bear in mind that the 'late starter' in ballet would be age 9-12 maybe... There have been cases such as Misty Copeland of course, but these are very rare. I myself started late (age 12) and you must strive and work your hardest every single day in every way... Ballet isn't a hobby, it's a lifestyle, for those who want it! Should say those who it wants! You absolutely must have a 'perfect ballet physique' though.... Slim, long legs in proportion to torso, long neck, elegant and graceful, strong flexible and high arched feet, good flexibility... And musicality. Have you done ballet/dance before? Or played sport competitively/seriously? This may help you slightly. Do you play any musical instruments/sing? This too will help. Get into classes and dance! And perhaps broaden your dreams to beyond the Royal Ballet... There are hundreds of companies in the world! At the moment, work as hard as you can, enjoy it and the rest will follow. best wishes!
  20. I have the 'chat' scheduled now ? 2 weeks ago, I sent an email to Moorland enquiring about the possibility of funding... Have heard nothing still. I'm not sure whether to email them again, or have my mum give the school a ring at some point!
  21. Ballet-wise, the most well-known in the UK (or that I can think of!) are Royal Ballet School, Elmhurst, Yorkshire Ballet Summer School, OPES, Ballet West, Masters of Ballet, Moorland Ballet Academy and Ballet Boost. There is sure to be others too though!
  22. I agree, there are loads and loads of choices, most of them are fantastic! It depends what your daughter is interested in... Does she love ballet the most? Musical theatre? All dance styles? And would you want one local to you, residential/non-residential? There's lots of information and personal experiences on the forum though
  23. Okay, thank you for your suggestions. Had a lovely private with teacher yesterday, I felt like asking her to give me one every day, for free, but honestly, it felt so good and I feel like I am improving with private lessons! Slightly different topic, but the dance school newsletter has just come out, and apparently all Grade 3 pupils are going on pointe from September... This worries me! Some of them are elevenish, Elmhurst associates and have been dancing seriously for a long time, but others can be as young as 8, most of them only once a week dancers with (sorry to say it) not very good technique, no posture or turnout really, including those who only started dancing a couple of months ago! I'm scared for them in case they injure themselves, and also slightly miffed that it took me almost 2 years and hard daily home practice to get my pointe shoes, and look at them
  24. Do you think putting it into a letter will be alright? I will be able to be more honest, complimentary and less embarrassed I think, and then my mum can write/monitor stuff too!
  25. How does one go about entering the All-England? Do you have to attend a special festival? Or earn a very high number of points at a local festival?
