  1. Get in that ballet class now! it is such a great thing to do, and as you don't want to go pro you have many options! Dance because you love it! Also, it is possible to enter local dance festivals with a ballet solo, or any type of solo/group, until you're 18, which you can win trophies or medals for.
  2. Hi Mummytwinkletoes, I guess I would be applying for Y10 entry (in year 9 currently)! The website says 20th May in the afternoon
  3. does anybody know when Elmhurst get back to you about times, what to bring etc? I sent off the application form last Wednesday in first class mail and have not had a reply... Need to sort train times and tickets as less than 2 weeks to go! I'm very excited though ?
  4. Oh I wish EYB could come to the northwest... They came to Preston (very near me) when I was ill in hospital and did Giselle (one of my favourite ballets) of all things! And the assessments sound inspiring too.
  5. I always subconsciously go into arabesque when I bend down to pick something up... And don't get me started on supermarket aisles becoming a stage! I've been known for jetèing and chaînéing into innocent shopkeepers!
  6. Thank you so much for such lovely helpful comments- I can feel my hips are definitely not right. On the other side, I am fine, but somehow my tendus are pretty rubbish using my left leg. I'm trying to train my body to obey my brain! I have a private lesson with my dance teacher tomorrow so will ask her too. I have an audition on Saturday, so I am really trying to work hard, especially as I was ill this weekend (horrible bug going round which makes you incredibly cold and exhausted and nauseous all the time). I had just nailed a triple pirouette, and the next day, my hips go crazy! I will really try to think about your corrections, thank you again. Please keep them coming!
  7. So basically, I was in class and told my tendus were looking pretty good. I repeated the exercise using the left leg, and my teacher gasped in horror. For weeks now, I can feel my hip jerking and horribly misaligning but I have no idea how to solve it, and neither does my teacher. It is a recent thing, and it drives me mad! Could anybody please give me a helping hand?
  8. I'm interested to know why a place at any summer school would be ticket to a dancing career? I guess it is networking, and I would love to have been accepted to RBS one, but there aren't any company/school directors watching class and best case scenario would be a place at RBS... Which in itself is not a ticket... As many are assessed out, injured, change their minds or simply can't find work. Yes, it would increase one's chances, but nothing is definite in ballet
  9. I had this problem for a long time, what takes me 2 minutes to remember now took me 2 months (I kid you not) 2 years ago! Just keep practising and focussing, at home and in class. Figure out whether you remember by seeing the choreography, or hearing the choreography... Try to apply the one you find easier! Write down the steps, make a rhyme of song..... Anything that works for you!
  10. Hello, does anybody know what is happening with this scheme more recently? I've had an email from them about auditions, and was just wondering whether it would be worthwhile? I prefer classical but do study contemporary, where would the classes take place? On what day/time? How often? Etc etc!
  11. Just wanted to query whether anybody knew what sort of photos Elmhurst are asking for? It states first and second position, but that is all! With or without plié or tendu? What arms? I have no idea!
  12. Thank you... Just wanted to query whether anybody knew what sort of photos Elmhurst are asking for? It states first and second position, but that is all! With or without plié or tendu? What arms? I have no idea!
  13. I would say, if it asks for last exam passed, then put the syllabus of that exam. If it simply asks what Method is studied, write both down - Ballet Method: RAD/IDTA
  14. I don't understand why height matters so much... Even companies are more diverse than schools. Shorter girls are (generally) easier to partner, can be put in front row of corps and can dance Cygnets, for example. Taller girls have certain roles too, and can partner the tallest boys easier, mand provided a girl isn't extreme (I don't know, under 4"11 or over 5"11) it should be a bout the dancer, not the person
  15. Sorry to invade slightly, but what about IDTA? Are they easier/ harder than RAD? Do they (like RAD) do English style or something else's? (I believe ISTD do Imperial [French style] or Cecchetti [Italian style])
  16. Well, I'm not sure if you could count 14 as near 9. But I am going! I can keep an eye out for your dd if she likes?
  17. The application form on their website only asks whether the individual is in year 4, 5 or 6... Is the extended associates audition a case of just turning up?
  18. Does anybody know how you apply for the extended associates? The application for the young dancers is up, not sure how the extended will work!
  19. I'll be Warrington (Northern). Thanks so far!
  20. By the recommendation of my dance teacher, I am off to audition for Cecchetti Associates in the next couple of months. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what these auditions entail? Is it just a normal ballet class? I will be auditioning at Senior level, is there any Pointework? Also, just some general information about the scheme. What are the faculty like? The quality of the classes etc. and approximately how many people get places? Just looking for someone with experience really, as I had no idea about it until recently!
  21. I wish Sylvie Guillem and Svetlana Zakharova's flexibility could be what made them unique as a ballet dancer, rather than set the standard for everybody else. I mean, nobody copied Margot Fonteyn's trademark 90 degree arabesque!
  22. In a way I wish that there was a split between ballet companies - classical ballet companies and contemporary ballet companies. Not that I'm against modern work, in fact I find it exciting, but I find it sad watching Odette thrust her leg up to her ear, and watch Aurora do so many pirouettes that she gets behind on the music.
  23. I have been reading many 'old' ballet books from maybe 50 years ago, and just wondered what happened to ballet between then and now, specifically ballet training. The average age to start dancing was at about 11, they worked at their local ballet schools for at most 10 hours a week, and then got jobs in companies at age 16? They still danced absolutely beautifully (Antoinette Sibley, Margot Fonteyn, Tamara Karsavina etc) and so I am wondering what happened, as nowadays the average is starting dance at 2 and vocational school at 11 before getting a job at 19? Also, why did the ideals change so drastically? Turnout of 45 degrees to 90 degrees, maximum height of 5 foot 6 to minimum height of 5 foot 6? Banana feet and hyper extension suddenly being very important? I don't understand really
  24. An odd question, but if a dancer does not place/gets not so good marks, does that mean the individual will not make a professional one day? It was my first Open Ballet today, and did not place out of 9 contestants (don't know my mark yet!) and worried!
  25. I don't really have much experience with either, but perhaps at Elmhirst you would get more performance opportunities, due to their association with Birmingham Royal Ballet? Maybe have a discussion with your child about the pros and cons of each school, maybe have a chat with current dance teacher? Good luck and well done!
