  1. My favourite things about Associates are: making lovely friends who understand you and also love dancing and are amazing at it! Exploring new places, having to work your very hardest in each class, new enchainements every week and having to memorise them, training with professionals who give little anecdotes and encouragements, trying different styles such as Lyrical, Repertoire and special conditioning such as yoga, but most of all because it is just so WONDERFUL to dance!
  2. That's alright, I presumed so! Are Associates usually alright if you have to miss/ leave early those odd one or two Saturdays?
  3. Sorry to interrupt, but if a date clashed, would you be expected to miss a local or Associate ballet class for a rehearsals?
  4. Thank you again in total, my dance hours including Associates and other dance is 6-11 hours per week - still not enough ballet though! relating to the boys conversation, would they take into account delayed puberty for a girl? My family has a history of 'late bloomers' - girls only starting to develop and grow at 15 and my brother was 17 when he literally shot up a whole three quarters of a foot! As a result, everybody towers over me (for now)! @Anna C I have had many conversations with my mum, being careful not to get too hysterical or pleading, and she actually agrees with me now - mostly because it was an ex-professional dancer and high calibre teacher that told us! She says that as long as it is no longer than half an hour away and there is a means to get there if she cannot drive me, it is okay (and also that my academic grades stay up). And also that it would be reasonable in price. Would it be standard for a dance school to offer classes at a reduced rate if you took lots/ did something in return? After 2 weeks of summer school dancing everyday for 6.5 hours, I felt fine... On top of the world in fact! My body felt more awake than ever, and very happy! I would always go back to the studio to practise for another half hour, and stretch and strengthen for an hour before classes started. It was the best time of my life Yes, I did get a bit achey and knotty, but nothing a foam roller could not solve. I have a back up plan just in case...,go to sixth form, reapply after a levels, but also for university... At the moment I'm thinking ballet teacher, nutritionist or something to do with nature/botany/zoology/marine biology. But none I would love so much as dancing, though maybe when I retire (if I make it ๐Ÿ™ ) i have contacted the the schools about their timetables and my situation and am waiting for replies, and then will enquire about trial lesson. Thank you for all your support, keep it coming!
  5. Thank you everyone for your replies. I think that it would have to be a complete change, as most of the times clash and quite a few state that you are only allowed to dance at their school. Does anybody know of any 'Centres for Excellence'? I will get in touch with the schools and ask about timetable and trial lessons etc! Would it be possible/appropriate to carry on with private lessons with the teacher as I am preparing for an upcoming exam? Or not?
  6. Hello, I am very sorry if this topic has been discussed a lot, but I am at a loss. I think since I have joined this forum I have been talking about local dance schools, but I am very conflicted at the moment! I have had 4 teachers now tell me I have potential, but need to get more training. I do 3 ballet hours locally per week + Associates. One of my favourite teachers and friends and dancers contacted me recently to offer me private classes, as she had said that really I ought to be doing 15 hours per week. Unfortunately, the classes would be far too far away - a 2 hour journey, and another 2 hours back. So I have been deeply researching local schools, and have found 3 possibles within a 30 minute radius - all of which are led by examiners, one BBO, one ISTD and one RAD, and all have vocational school success. All of them would offer more hours than my current dance school. However, I have been win my dance school for 3 years. We all feel a close tie with them - I have danced solos in shows, won festivals, I got into associates thanks to them. My teacher has been a close friend throughout many tough times. I am also training in my private lesson for my IDTA Intermediate exam to sit it early next year. But, for quite a while I have been feeling unchallenged in my normal classes, like we are just learning exercises and doing them. I am told I am 'the best' when I know I need to improve. Some teachers, including mum Associate teachers, have picked up on some basic technical issues, which my main teacher has said is not a problem. One of my teachers I am not sure is qualified, and my teacher has put all of a certain grade en Pointe - one of whom cannot get over her box of her pointe shoes or indeed go onto relevรฉ in flat shoes. Nobody else wants to become a ballet dancer. But that said, I adore my teacher! So I really don't know what to do... I more than anything want to become a ballerina, I will do anything! But I doubt it would be possible to dance at more than one school. Aghhh I don't know! Help! I have also got to take into account finances and academics too, but I need ballet!
  7. I love 'the ballet book' by Darcey Bussell. It is co-written with Royal Ballet School and I must have read it 100 times! It is really good for looking up steps, learning about notation/choreography, how to sew ribbons etc etc! And also talks about becoming a professional and useful school addresses! I love the pictures too. For or an older person, I definitely recommend Gaynor Minden's book the Ballet Companion - contains absolutely everything a dancer will ever need. โค๏ธ
  8. Is this a ballet school? Would you go with the aim of a classical career? Anyway, it sounds great
  9. So new EYB dates are out I'm so happy that one of them is near enough to me that I can audition! P.S. Does anybody know what the auditions (particularly the senior auditions) entail? I know it is just a class, but 1h 45 mins is quite a long class. I can imagine it would be very busy! 10. I absolutely loved Le Corsaire โค๏ธ I thought that Conrad and Medora worked so well together and really made me believe that they were in love, I had tears in my eyes three times! What a beautiful ending! And what a beautiful pas de deux! And the orchestra was so beautiful too! I also liked Gulnare, I though she was an exceptional actress and great dancer. Nearly everybody had an extremely winged foot, especially in arabesque... Is this a Russian thing? But it was so so so lovely, I would see it again in a heartbeat! I want to be a ballerina so much! p.s does anybody know how tall the Pasha was? He looked huge!
  11. I've just completed my applications, and they have to be done separately I'm not sure why, but the applications between full-time/associates and summer and spring courses can't be done in one form, possibly because of the later closing date
  12. Hello, I have just been contacted from Ajkun with the same message... Even though I have a private account and they couldn't have seen any photos of me? Does anybody have any knowledge?
  13. I like this variation the general idea of the steps is (not including the walks and runs and pauses) pas de bourrรฉe, glissade, cabriole x3 Soutenu, double tours en l'air, soutenu, double tours en l'air, soutenu, double tours, entrechat six, soutenu, double tours, entrechat six. temps levรฉe in arabesque, balancรฉ en tournant, jetรฉ entrelacรฉ x 2 coupรฉ jetรฉ x 7 chaรฎnรฉe turns, grand jetรฉ x2 barrel turns x2 Chaรฎnรฉes, soutenu, kneel
  14. Thank you lovely @Balletmum55 ! You've just made my whole week! I thought every inter ( and every person there actually!) was so kind and a good dancer, but I'm sure your dd was amazing! I was the very smallest of the next group up, seniors B. {Honestly, thank you, what a beautiful comment, shameful tears in my eyes xx good luck to your dd}
  15. Hello! Last year I attended the RBS audition insight day and really got a lot out of it, as well as a lovely class and day out! I have also heard of the Ballet Boost course, which sounds wonderful. Really, I just wanted to know all of the options out there? My half term is very weirdly late (from 30th October) and I expect I will have to take a day off school! At the moment I am thinking Ballet Boost because of the feedback etc, but am nervous that I would be the youngest and worst there, as I would be in the Upper School audition category. Good luck everyone with the coming year, and thank you in advance
  16. I cant go to TBR obviously (though it sounds incredible!) but just wondered what the difference between a 'technique class' and a 'company class' was on the timetable
  17. Hello again! I am back at my regular practising at home and am delighted that, even after a 2 week break from 'ballet' (still stretching and conditioning) that my technique, and especially turnout has improved! Maybe letting my brain soak in all the SS corrections by itself was a good idea! But we are sorting out my bedroom- we have had to move my barre and bed. It is the only room I can practise in, and unfortunately has carpet. Is it very bad to practise on carpet? It is very very hard to 'peel' the feet in tendus etc, articulating the whole foot, and I don't know whether his will become easier as my carpet no doubt gets worn out (as the previous patch of carpet was). Having been used to shiny SS floor, it is hard to readjust! So, will practising on carpet be bad? Or are there any good things about it? Thank you!
  18. Thank you for your responses everybody I suppose it is definitely easier and better to wait... Especially since the chance really is tiny and my parents and I want me to acquire a good set of GCSEs. And considering how many auditions I will go to in year 11, it is best to save time and money and effort!
  19. Would it negatively impact your chances if you do not wear one? I've not found one that is small enough yet! Is it meant to go round the waist, or hips?
  20. I can't stop smiling when I read this! Huge huge huge congratulations, wish you both the very best
  21. Very sorry to interrupt, but are you expected to wear a belt to upper school auditions? I know it is approved for lower school (why is that?)
  22. It's nearly that time again!? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ i was wondering if it is acceptable to ask your Associate teacher to take the audition photos? I adore my ballet teacher, but I feel like the photos do not picture me in the best light, my legs and body always look a little short and chunky, my legs look a little bent and my turnout bad! I once shot some with my mum who got frustrated by the amount of time it took to take one single picture, but looked better. But the only suitable room we have at home is carpet-ed... Is that a no-no? Looking at the pictures taken by the Associate teacher, they all look beautiful! i don't want to be rude or upset anybody though!
  23. I have a friend who went to RBS summer school this year and she was one of only a couple of non-vocational students in her group... And she does a good Associates programme and at least 3 hours of ballet every night! There were some from POB school, RBS, Elmhurst, various American schools and private studios.... List goes on!
  24. Sorry to awaken this thread again, but is it worth it to audition for year 11 entry into lower schools? Is there at all a chance of a place? I was debating as to whether to audition to RBS, Elmhurst and Tring, partly just for the experience before the 'main' auditions at 16+ and also because I actually enjoy auditions! I would probably need an MDS/funding help if the impossible happened and I was offered a place, are they offered at 15/year 11? RBS is nice in the way that all you need to do is tick an extra box for full-time, as I will apply again for Associates and SS, but Tring and Elmhurst would take a bit more time. But it's my dream to go to ballet school! Are there any cons to auditioning at all? Thank you
  25. I finished my 2 weeks at OPES on Friday (now am in the middle of Scottish woodlands and mountains!) and enjoyed every minute! The teaching and classes were faultless... The teachers pushed you as hard as possible while still making he class a joy to take. I have improved so much, what with lots of general and individual corrections, and have learnt to love other forms of dance: contemporary, commercial, ceilidhs.... (Though not quite as much as ballet ๐Ÿ˜‰) the repertoire we learnt was truly gorgeous, the oldest students doing lots of pas de deux and pointe, and the middle students also doing pointe (my group) and there was a very good mix of vocational and non-vocational, but there were no cliques! The beds were comfy, everybody friendly, the food good and I have to praise the laundry! All my washing was freshly ironed and washed within 2 hours! I would definitely recommend OPES to all dancers with a passion for ballet!
