  1. I should think, if the child performed well, that the judges would be glad to see a genre rather than modern or classical! I have heard of a girl auditioning with a Bollywood dance (she was Indian, and so her national style) and she got into a dance and dance teaching college. The panel were pleasantly surprised with this very different style! So if your child loves to tap, and is good at it, go for it!
  2. Thank you for your helpful comments, really good advice! I will add that my parents are supportive and want me to achieve and be happy (within reason of money and time) and I know they trust my dance teacher, so whatever she says they would agree with! Slightly nervous in case my dance teacher says something like 'I think you're doing well and improving enough with the lessons you are currently having'! I will write a list of questions and find a time that we can all have a heart to heart! ome quick question... I've just finished my 3 day enforced 'rest' from ballet and started with a simple barre practice and some syllabus centre work. I'm terrified, as after a rest my technique seems to have fallen out the window! My turnout has shrunk, extensions are lower, grand jetés lower and not straight... List goes on! I have been stretching and conditioning over the days, but am really scared that my hard work this past half term will be ruined! Will my technique return? Sorry for sounding silly!
  3. Thank you again everybody. Can anybody give advice on how to word the 'serious talk' with dance teacher? I love my main teacher, but she does scare me a little, so I don't know how to introduce the issue. I'm scared she will think I am ungrateful! I know what I want to say, but do not know how to say it! Can someone help?
  4. @Pixiewoo I haven't been to OPES, but have been to Malvern which is a sister course and it was about 50/50 of those who brought Practice tutus (just the skirt bit), in my group anyway. the oldest group (about 16+) all brought practice tutus, but none of the youngest group did I believe (<11). If you have one or want one, great, but they are optional
  5. Thank you everybody, I will work as hard as possible. What's meant to be will happen unfortunately I cannot watch the All England finals as am away this week, but I do enter local festivals and it is inspiring to watch fellow dancers, I am in open ballet. Also have my first character coming up. @sarahw what would 'rest' be? I am very very active most of the time between sports clubs every lunchtime at school and dance or dance practice daily. in holidays however I usually take 2/3 days off ballet but do Pilates and stretching instead, before building back with barre work. I really do want to grow, and eat a very healthy diet, but have inherited a fast metabolism and so have always been underweight. Thank you so much everybody for all your suggestions, this forum is a lifesaver!
  6. I think I have the right physique, but I am very very small for my age. Is that a hinderance? It is awkward because my dance school has two teachers... One who ignores me completely, no corrections, praise, eye contact anything (but is nicer in Modern and tap) and another who teaches 2 of 3 of my ballet classes and is the most fantastic teacher... Very very exacting and strict, but also encouraging. My family does want to support my dream of course, but don't really understand why I would need more than 3 45 minute classes a week, plus associates. They are happy to pay for my training and travel to associates, but ordinary training must not be too far away. I pay for my Easter/summer schools and workshops and uniform out of my birthday and Christmas present money. Do you think it is at all possible, if I work really hard, to get by on this amount? (P.S would you believe I have only just found out that my mum has gorgeously high Insteps and hyperextension... I inherited nearly every feature of her apart from these.... Grr! ?)
  7. I have a private lesson once a week already, but my dance teacher will not do any more than that. It's a bit awkward... I was doing a G3 class for a while, but she said I could either do that OR my Advanced class, although they are at different times. And she recommends not doing more than one Associate programme (we disagree!). It is only half an hour. I feel awful for saying this, like I am being a traitor!
  8. I'm only 14 and so can't access the Dancehouse and Ludus (my neighbour and friend was a founder of Ludus though). I will talk to my dance teacher and hopefully she will have an answer. I do do 3 ballet classes week, but all of 30-45 minute duration and one of them is with a teacher who seems to really dislike me and hate ballet. I am determined to become a ballet dancer... I will find a way somehow!
  9. Most of the other schools around me only offer 1 hour a week, if that! There is one that has some loose connections with my school, but they study ISTD and I do IDTA? If I went to that school on days I don't dance already I would have an extra 3 hours, but my dance teacher seems against it.
  10. Hi all, firstly, if one does not get into RBS or Elmhurst, does that mean that a classical ballet career is impossible? They say they take those with potential, so am worried, as I got into neither this year i got into the Moorland School weekly Saturday associate programme though, which I'm delighted about, and have two more auditions for monthly Sunday associate programmes. I'm also going to a BRB ballet thing, and a great summer school for 2 weeks. However, I can only do up to 2.5 hours of ballet at my dance school, as some of you know, and I am desperate to become a ballerina one day, even if it is the back row of the corps de ballet! I am willing to work to the bone all day every day! But will only start vocational school (cross fingers) at 16. does anybody have any suggestions of ways to top up my ballet training until it is at a good standard? I practise every day at home, but wondered if people could recommend things I have not considered? Any opportunities in the North West that are easily commutable from the Lancaster area? My dance school cannot offer more than what I do. im praying that a solution will come, thank you in advance!
  11. Were results by post or email? Huge congratulations to the yeses and commiserations to the 'not yet's.
  12. Oh I wish wish wish wish wish that I could just try to get to ballet school! But can you get an MDS if you would be (possibly, hopefully, but most likely not) entering in Year 10? Is it just Year 7s that get this?
  13. Is this from the audition on the 13th? Those results are quick!
  14. I went to ballet west last year, and loved it. Going to OPES this year though i stayed a week, and it is utterly beautiful! There was an opportunity to go for a walk into Taynuilt over the week. We had ballet, contemporary/jazz, repertoire, body conditioning (we all had six packs by the end of the week!), choreography and Pointe. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. Breakfast lunch and supper was provided, but many people brought snacks!
  15. I loved it so much! (And worked hard of course) I have never auditioned for Elmhurst before, so never knew what to expect! But I suppose if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. If I don't get in, at least I had an amazing experience!
  16. Is there any possibility at all of a full time place being considered at the Associates audition, or is this out of the question? ? I absolutely adored Elmhurst and the auditions! (Posted this on three posts! A lot even for me! But desperate to know!)

  19. I'm doing OPES for first time also, week 1 and 2. Haven't received anything from them yet, though. I'm so looking forward to it after the wonderful Malvern Ballet Seminars, which was the best week of my life!
  20. Is the little match girl very very common? I have just been given it as a character! I like the choreography my teacher has given me a lot, but am worried about my chances if I am the 10th little match girl!
  21. Bumping this thread again! I just wanted to ask whether Moorland offered any funding? I would so love to audition but cannot afford it, even though technically we are not poor
  22. I got the email today, and the audition is for year 9 upwards
  23. Sorry to bother yet again, but does anybody know how long the results tend to take for Elmhurst associates? Delighted to say that I have been offered another Saturday programme which I need to accept before mid June, surely Elmhurst could not take a month (though RBS took four!)?
