Royal Ballet Casting for Autumn Season 2018/19
Shade replied to Richard LH's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I think RB casting is generally reliable but nobody can plan for injury or sickness. Nunez/Osipova in Bayadere should be great - they were in Giselle.- 434 replies

Janet - I see Coppelia as a soubrette role, along with Lise in Fille. Two wonderful ballets but surely 'classical'?- 434 replies

It won't be any consolation but I would say that there is greater variety in the RB cinema casts than the Bolshoi. However, some of those RB names are recognised internationally and the RB does transmit to the world. At least with Bayadere there is a large cast and key roles like the three shades, golden idol etc. Mayerling also offers numerous opportunities to dancers.

What an enjoyable evening. But I kept asking myself - who could walk away from Shyklarov? Not me! Brilliant cast all round - but for me Sambe seems too youthful to play Lescaut. He is an older brother to a very young Manon in the novel. The jealousy between Manon and the Mistress was so real. I think a gamzatti/Nykia face off between these would be great. wish I had booked for next Friday now as I expect the characterisation will be even more developed.- 592 replies

Thank you Naomi M for that interesting information about the author of the Diaghilev. I am still reading this book and find the English really flows well. I am now also reading a book about the Bolshoi, Bolshoi Confidential by Simon Morrison. Interesting section about Swan Lake and its development. -

What a shame for David Hallberg. However thrilled to see Shklyarov with Osipova in Manon. Always happy to see him in London- 184 replies

I hope that the Akram Khan Giselle does get to Moscow but I wouldn't be too certain in this political climate. However, it's not scheduled until July 2019. -

If you already have a ticket Bruce - well done. I hope you have time to report back on the performance. -
Lovely line up of group winners. I picked the BIS and Reserve, so pleased I have still got the eye for a good dog. Very happy to see my old breed, the smooth collie get group 3 in a very large and strong Pastoral Group. They are an endangered breed but are very intelligent and lovely dogs to own.

Thanks Amelia for that clip. Fantastic achievement

The young Osipova and Vasiliev performance of Don Q had that great excitement. It is a crime against the art that the Bolshoi never released the DVD of the cinema screening. Was it sour grapes I wonder?

The Royal Ballet: Giselle, January-March 2018
Shade replied to Nina G.'s topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Lovely pictures Don Q Fan - thank you. Something to help me remember this wonderful performance. You would not have known it was the end of the run of Giselles and what a run! It seems to have had everything, great debuts, dramatic cast changes etc. i count myself very fortunate to have been there on Friday. Sparkling dancing in the pas de six, menacing Myrthe and the Wilis. Osipova's mad scene - my heart broke along with hers. Act 2 everything I could have hoped for. It was so moving and great that the audience showed such enthusiastic appreciation of the memorable performance that we had witnessed. I am feeling withdrawal symptoms from this ballet. The Royal Ballet is in fine health and should feel proud of its performances. -
Good luck at Crufts Julie. Lovely looking dogs. I like the flat coat too v handsome. It was my ambition to qualify a dog for Crufts but never managed it!

I still think Shrainer's dancing was too small scale for the role. She danced all the steps but where was the revolutionary fervour? The role of Adeline may suit her better. i am surprised the the Bolshoi didn't broadcast the other cast.

The Royal Ballet: Giselle, January-March 2018
Shade replied to Nina G.'s topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Sad but not surprised about the cast change. Wishing a speedy recovery to Mr Hallberg. I am sure that Ms Osipova and Mr Ball will do their best to make the performance memorable - for the right reasons. I am very much looking forward to Friday. -
It was fun to see this. I agree it was Tsvirko's show. I am surprised that the management thought Shrainer could hold the stage against him. Somebody clearly thinks highly of her. I thought it was rather unfair, considering the great ballerinas who had performed this before - Alexandrova, Osipova, Krysanova and all very recent. I enjoyed seeing the other performers too- Kretova, Ovcharenko, Savin, Chudin etc. The lady in the cinema next to me was most disappointed. I think she was expecting the more usual classical ballet!
