  1. Shade

    Proms 2019

John Wilson and his orchestra is on BBC4 tonight.
  2. Actually I didn't mean the set of 32 but perhaps it was down to my extreme viewing angle. I will always remember the beauty of the swans in the white acts. I think they deserve a better production.
  3. Lin I am sorry to hear about your injury and wish you a speedy recovery. Bright stream - thank you Mr Ratmansky for rescuing this Shoshtakovich score and to the orchestra for such vibrant playing. But what joy and humour (and I needed both this week). Chudin also reminds me of Muntagirov - so charming last night as were the leading ladies. Skorvstov brilliant and made me laugh. Terrific all round. What a shame it wasn't sold out. Was it last performed in 2010? I really hope these productions are not dropped completely. It would be such a loss to us.
  4. Went last night mainly to see the swans which didn’t disappoint. I wasn’t keen on the way the score had been altered in Act 2 but I did enjoy the Princesses’ dances. I did prefer Nikulina in the white Act, she was sorrowful without being cold, in the manner of other Russian swans. I didn’t enjoy her black act as much and I think she fell out of one set of fouettés. I think Chudin deserved more recognition for his beautiful classical dancing - not usual bolshoi style. I like Soares as the evil genius but it seemed much more his ballet than Chudins. Generally good playing from the orchestra with the odd screechy violin. not my favourite production that’s for sure but glad that I went. There was a long queue for returns at the box office I noticed.
  5. Well this evening I upgraded my Wednesday amphi tickets for Thursday grand tier so I am happy! It suits me better workwise too. Win win
  6. That was a great prom really enjoyed it and lovely to see Gary Avis. He was so natural on camera- the Royal Ballet should use him for their cinema broadcasts - when he is not performing of course!
  7. I don’t yet have a favourite production of Swan Lake but I shall try to see BRB in Southampton as I haven’t seen it. I have caved in and bought a ticket for the Bolshoi next week - I love the music even if it’s not my favourite production. I would be interested to know What the Bolshoi had before the Grigorovich- was it the same as the Kirov? i would like to see the Ratmansky production.
  8. Really appreciate these reports since I am not seeing Spartacus this time. The role demands real commitment from all. I too remember Mukhamedov so have been spoilt. For this run I think Lobukhin may have the edge but I will have to wait and see!
  9. Nooo.. to me the Shades scene is the greatest white act in the ballet canon. Seen live it has me on the edge of my seat. Even the music gives me goosebumps. Agree though best seen live. I have never forgotten the first time I saw it - performed years ago by the Kirov. So beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. I do love all the white acts though it took me many years to come to love Giselle.
  10. Thanks Annamk I thought of going but having read about it wasn’t sure that I could cope with the sound of infant crying for that length of time! Probably best not viewed by expectant or new mothers I think.
  11. Well it was one if those wonderful performances where everything was exceptional and thrilling - not only the principals but the whole cast, orchestra etc. Bayadère is my favourite ballet and I have seen many performances. I was really surprised by both Osipova and Nuñez - didn’t expect Nuñez to be such an imperious Gamzatti and Osipova to be such a soulful Nikyia. The fight scene was really dramatic and convincing. Muntagirov was his usual superlative self. I count myself so lucky to have been there. It made up somewhat for the fact that I was too ill to go to the opening night and had to hand back my ticket! However I can at least buy the DVD.
  12. Thanks JohnS for the reminder- will be watching
  13. Was there with husband last night. We loved the Firebird - the music, costumes and dance. Thrilling and so glad that Kish’ retirement was properly marked. it was the first time my husband has seen Month and he liked it least. We both admired the dancers- Anna Rose O Sullivan was charming and very fleet of foot. Muntagirov was a bit of a lad - flirting with all the ladies! Cuthbertson very moving. It felt more Edwardian England than Russia to me. we both loved Symphony in C - terrific but I thought Magri was not the right match for Sambé- his jumps were so light. great end to the season and the company is full of talented dancers at all levels right now- lucky us!
  14. I agree more about her start and training would have made a more balanced production
  15. For those who like tea a visit to Mariage Frere in King Street is a real treat but not inexpensive. I had the “gold cake” and it was delicious. Also by the ROH you can watch the chefs make the Portugese custard tarts and buy them fresh from the oven.
  16. Yes Rob that would be great - if only! Then we could have endless debates about which way round we preferred!
  17. It sound very exciting and hope that everyone has a wonderful evening and I look forward to reading the reports.
  18. I am planning to go as we have Tate membership and I like to get my money’s worth!
  19. Yes I went. I enjoyed both the film and Q & A. I really liked the Bayadere coaching, Makarova, saying that Osipova went to ‘ a quite good school’. However, the majority of the film was about the creation of the modern pieces so quite light on classical ballet. I personally would have preferred it the other way round ( i would guess so would others in the audience). However, it was interesting to see the creative process and that is clearly what Ms Osipova enjoys. Ms Osipova was funny and intelligent in the Q & A session, switching easily between Russian and English. There were no difficult questions although someone asked if she had faced challenges when in Russia if her physique was not the current Ideal (or something like that)! I had assumed that the questions would be ‘planned’ rather than spontaneous but not sure now.
  20. I am very excited for Bayadere - is it Nuñez as Nikyia- as that was the one I missed due to illness?
  21. Wonderful review - made me laugh but how sorry I felt for Ms Part in the Rose Adagio
  22. Well on Saturday the box office couldn’t find my tickets for R&J (which I had asked for them to hold) and then gave me the wrong ones (My Firebird ones) and then told me that the ROH aim was to phase out paper tickets.
