  1. My hope - having been to both the earlier productions is that a wider audience will be tempted to see more dance. I suspect that some who came to see the earlier shows went away disappointed because it was nothing like “Take me to Church”.
  2. Thanks Nogoat for your comprehensive review. I didn’t post much before because I had just got home and was recovering from the harrowing act 3 of last nights performance. I find that I cannot see multiple R & Js in one run unlike other ballets, perhaps because it is more “human”. I agree that it is difficult to share a stage with Osipova but Hallberg is accustomed to dancing with great ballerinas. The balcony scene was heartbreakingly beautiful, despite some struggles with the lifts. The morning after the wedding night was desperate and full of despair on juliet’s part. Hay was excellent but Paris looked like a boy - too young I thought. Hirano was terrifyingly menacing. Hay excellent. orchestra performance was better than I have heard before. Lovely flute and violin solos. There were tears after act 3 in the amphitheater for sure. It was a visceral, heartrending performance from both Osipova and Hallberg. Truly great.
  3. According to Osipova’s interview in the Standard this week some dancers prefer not to dance with her. I agree the she has had brilliant performances with Watson and McRae but I also enjoyed her Kitri and Nikyia with Muntagirov, Juliet with Acosta etc. i see she is not down for Coppelia - I wonder if she is elsewhere for that. I am disappointed as I never saw her perform that live with the Bolshoi, only in the cinema. Still looking forward to the new season.
  4. I have not been yet and really appreciate all these thoughtful posts. Given that every performance has sold out perhaps there could have been a few more? Then there could have been opportunity for all. I have said before I think that I don’t regard age of the dancer as relevant to my choice of performance but understand if others do. I have also seen performances where Juliet was sublime but Romeo was not - indeed that was the case when I saw Asylmuratova with the Kirov. However I would not have missed seeing her for the world.
  5. mr Ball would look good in anything I think but I just thought those costumes were such a disappointment. The ballerinas costumes were beautiful. It was interesting to read the Vogue article- apparently Medusa had a full mask/snakes head but of course then the face was obscured so it was changed to a headpiece. I wonder if the men’s headgear should also have been changed. I prefer to see faces myself. who was Athene last night please?
  6. What an interesting evening. First time viewing of all the pieces for me and I think I really need a second one! The music and singing were excellent. Loved the ballerina’s costumes for the first two but think the men were hard done by. The dancing was great though. i admire Hirano’s pure strength I didn’t see a single tremble in the “leg lift” in Medusa, he was menacing too. Have to say I hoped there wasn’t going to be any damage to the dancers from the scarf wrapping and kicks. Osipova really went for it.
  7. Is this the best ballet score - in my opinion yes of the 20th Century. Very surprised that Khachaturian’s Spartacus was higher in Classic FM hall of fame this year!
  8. Others were at R & J this afternoon but my husband and I went to see ENOs current production of Lehar’s Merry Widow. The first time we have seen this operetta despite it being on my to see list for some time. What fun it was too. We know the music well so that helped but it was a joyful event, full of fun and lovely singing. Very glad we went.
  9. Very enjoyable gala. My favourites were the Robbins and the Tharp. Thought it was tough for the dancers to do Flames as the second piece - would have benefitted from more of a build up perhaps. The Diana divertissement is from Esmeralda I think - not sure if it was added at a later stage (can’t recall the chronology). went home very happy if a bit later than I anticipated!
  10. Very very sorry to hear of Lantratov’s injury and wish him a speedy recovery.
  11. However they could shave some time off the generous intervals without inconveniencing customers.
  12. Well where I was sitting there was enthusiastic applause for both - a beautiful partnership should be appreciated even more
  13. I do so agree with you Bruce but didn’t want to appear smug at our good fortune. The joy of Monday is still with me - despite not getting home till 1.00 in the morning and all the confusion of the week!
  14. Thanks Bruce and Alison I have checked my Widow tickets and they are for 13 April so I hope I can now attend the Putrov show. thanks capybara for the additional info too.
  15. Oh dear - just realised that this is the same day as ENOs Merry Widow at 15.00. Wonder if I do both?
  16. Yes indeed she did - I had tickets for that very performance and I was extremely disappointed. It is rare that I have had an opportunity to see her dance in the uk as sadly she doesn’t seem to tour with the Bolshoi. Hence I have every sympathy with people who had bought tickets in good faith to see Osipova and are now disappointed. I doubt any explanation will satisfy them. Nonetheless I would love to see Shklyarov as Basilio.
  17. Well Monday is not the best night of the week for me to have a late night (due to work next day) and Monday’s can have a somewhat subdued audience. But not last night! It’s not my favourite production either Nogoat, but you couldn’t fault the company for commitment or excellence of dancing. I like the Osipova/Muntagirov partnership - there was fun, cheekiness, tenderness and fireworks. I love a swaggering, smouldering swishy caped matador (Reece Clarke), fiery partner (Claire Calvert), charming Amour and regal Queen of the Dryads (Fumi Kaneko). There was humour too. The chap next to me was going to miss Act 3, but was persuaded to stay, as I said it was the best part. He loved it- hope he didn’t miss his Train. it was pure joy- I wish I could bottle it and have it to sustain me for the rest of the week. Thank you RB.
