  1. I notice that the pre-performance talk, I think it's on the 29th, is being filmed. Wonder if this is potential footage for the cinema relay?
  2. There's Mats Ek's Giselle, where Albrecht dances nude in the second act ... I remember Tamara Rojo saying that she'd love it if the RB did the production, and I thought: "I *know* these dancers. I wouldn't necessarily mind if it were a visiting company, but am not sure I want to see that on dancers I watch regularly, thank you very much." And it's at this point that I start feeling the urge to go and look out Clement Crisp's famous quote about the problem being that certain parts carry on moving after the rest of the body has stopped ...
  3. I suspect that most of my candidates for LEAST favourite ballet are among the hundreds I've never yet seen, or have deliberately avoided. But of the ones I *have* seen, I've put most of them out of the easily-accessible part of my memory, I guess. Although Beyond Bach has unfortunately just floated to the surface ...
  4. Not sure that necessarily follows. Management might just be waiting to see what their options are for that date, given that Winter's Tale will be on by then. Ah, so I now have Takada twice in 5 days - I may need to do some rescheduling. Again Very disappointed not to see Morera, since I missed her last time round as well, but I can hardly say I'm surprised. After all, people were suggesting that if she was likely to be fit she'd probably be making sure she was okay for Frankenstein as top priority.
  5. My favourite ballets include: Symphonic Variations The Dream La Fille Mal Gardée That's the Ashton done. The rest will take more thinking about ...
  6. Right, well, I've just - rather tediously - merged 4 threads on more or less the same subject to get more of the information in the same place. All part of the service
  7. Some additional contributions from another thread (which you can get to by clicking on the curved arrow within the quotes):
  8. Here's the link to the seating thread I mentioned earlier: http://www.balletcoforum.com/index.php?/topic/2715-seating-in-the-roh/
  9. Hi, and welcome to the forum. Seating preferences vary according to the individual, of course. Grand Tier is *very* nice, but rather far away. Balcony is like GT, but higher. Stalls circle can be good as long as you don't go too far to the sides, when you start getting a restricted view. I think we have a ROH seating thread somewhere, but don't have time to look for it at present, I'm afraid.
  10. Don't know whether we have many readers in Devon, but still ... http://www.travelzoo.com/uk/entertainment/-10-30-up-Top-Rated-Operas-in-Plymouth-Save-up-to-53--2229524/
  11. Thanks, Ruth - glad I prodded people. Although if anyone has any cheaper offers, that would be welcome, too
  12. I was wondering what it was I had so vehemently marked the Fairfield Halls down for on 2nd April: here's the answer: https://www.fairfield.co.uk/en-GB/shows/san%20francisco%20ballet-%20romeo%20-%20juliet%20-%20film/info Make the most of the place before it closes
  13. I just want to know: who the heck was that *booing* during the curtain calls?!
  14. This is playing at Wimbledon this week, and when I looked fairly recently I noticed that there were quite a lot of seats still available, at least for some performances. Does anyone know if there have been any ticket offers? I could probably drag a friend to see it if there was a 2-for-1 going.
  15. Ah, I think we've had that one before. One of the theories put forward was that Berthe might have been the victim of another womanising nobleman, and a single mother, I seem to remember.
  16. The RB used to sell signed pointe shoes as a fundraiser, though, didn't it?
  17. I'm wondering whether an article in a collectibles magazine might be a better/alternative way to go? Not that it's a subject I know much about, mind you! Might be worthwhile doing a bit of serious research in the hope that the information will filter through to the right people.
  18. I doubt that the church, back in those days, would have made the distinction. Maybe not compulsory, exactly, but without it being deemed suicide she'd presumably have been buried in the churchyard, in consecrated ground, and the rest of the ballet wouldn't have played out as it did. (I'm assuming that consecrated ground was deemed to keep any evil away from the bodies). I doubt that it's recent. And there's no restriction on crosses to churchyards only: indeed, if someone was buried in unconsecrated ground I guess it would be thought that they needed every help they could get in keeping evil spirits away from their bodies, making a cross more likely to be used, maybe? And yes, it *is* ultimately the power of the cross which at least helps to save Albrecht: when Giselle sends him back to its protection and stretches her arms out in front of him in a cross the Wilis all cower away in fear. What keeps him going until dawn, though, is that she relieves him of half the dancing, so he hasn't been danced to death by then.
  19. I thought there was also something about the wavy line that was supposed to be linked to a snake, although it may not be in this version? Albrecht lives because Giselle still loves him, and forgives him and his betrayal (and she too avoids becoming a Wili by not taking her revenge on him). Hilarion hasn't done anything which requires forgiveness (unless, of course, in some characterisations you can claim that his actions were self-interested rather than having Giselle's best interests at heart, I suppose).
  20. I was coming round to the conclusion that the changes must have been linked somehow to the fact that the production was televised, but Melody's point about bulk was something I hadn't considered. And I suspect Margaret is right about needing to make the desired impression/sufficient distinction in black and white - the "flames" in particular ought to have shown up really well (my guess would be that the "Fire Fairy" was "Violente"?). Yolanda, if these tutus were made for a one-off performance, is that reflected in the quality of the making - that they weren't intended for long-term use?
  21. Have you done the ROH guided tours? (Are they still doing them, or have they fallen victim to the redevelopment work?)
  22. So pleased we've been able to help, Yolanda But are we really saying that they made a whole load of new tutus just for a TV broadcast?! BTW, the one on the left is particularly gorgeous
  23. I was wondering how Aurora could have a blue tutu, but perhaps it was from the vision scene? Hope you get some answers! And welcome to the forum.
  24. I don't think anyone knows yet whether Osipova will be dancing or not, and if she isn't, whether it'll be Lamb/Golding again. Lamb has her actually-scheduled performance the day before, so guess she will need the time to be rehearsing with her scheduled partner.
  25. Bear in mind, too, that ENB's classes tend to be very oversubscribed, so it may well take a while to get in on one of them.
