It's relatively easy to access from New Street station too, isn't it? All I need now is an afternoon concert so I can actually get home from there

London travel disruption this weekend - and other times
alison replied to alison's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I noticed a banner headline on the Southeastern website yesterday which I think said there were no trains into Charing Cross, Waterloo East and Cannon Street this weekend. (Also, there's no Circle Line at all). To be borne in mind if you're doing the early matinee at Covent Garden, for example.- 96 replies

I have a feeling the ROH also accepts Theatre Tokens. Worth checking out another time, because they might be easier to obtain?

On over about the first 40 minutes, if you want to listen on iPlayer.

Nicole Car will be on In Tune on Radio 3 this afternoon, sometime in the next couple of hours.

Bolshoi cinema broadcasts feedback 2015-2016
alison replied to alison's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I know - those eyes really were tremendous, weren't they? Ironic though, I thought, that 2 out of the 4 leads in the Bolshoi's calling card were in fact played by ex-Mariinsky dancers (I seem to remember this was the run in which Ivan Vasiliev was guesting, so they probably wouldn't have wanted to use him.)- 153 replies

I can't imagine having synthetic "leather" ballet shoes: if they're like ordinary synthetic shoes I imagine they would just stretch and never resume their original shape, which I'd have thought would make them horrible to dance in. And yes, leather is a byproduct of the food industry, so no, animals aren't being killed just so people can have shoes. What on earth would you do with all the waste hides if they weren't made into leather? (and do the girls routinely avoid leather ordinary shoes as well?)

Ah, Dick Barton. The much-lamented Croydon Warehouse Theatre used to do really great DB spoofs for their Christmas show. It got demolished a few years ago, and they haven't got round to rebuilding it yet, despite the fact that it's supposed to be part of Croydon's regeneration project

Bavarian State Ballet 16-17 season
alison replied to toursenlair's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
"Alice", already? And which Spartacus, please? (remembering that the problem with the Grigorovich one is finding companies with the right sort of male dancers for the roles).- 34 replies

Upcoming DVD/Blu-ray Releases
alison replied to charliewise's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I've never been quite sure if there *is* a "set" way of dancing Tchai Pas! Certainly every time I see it back in the programming it never looks how I expect it to look, so I don't know whether it's my memory that's at fault, or what. This one definitely won't be going on my Christmas list, anyway. -
Ballet shoes for black dancers
alison replied to Pulcinella's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Seems like a no-brainer, doesn't it? On the other hand, from the point of view of mass-production I suppose you're not going to be wanting to have to produce too many different tones, which makes me wonder whether there is one or more optimum shade(s) which would be particularly suitable for lightening up or darkening down so as to cover as large a range of skin tones as possible, from Carlos Acosta to Brooklyn Mack, say. The colour shown in the photo looks not that far from American Tan, which I shouldn't have thought was ideal. From discussion of related topics in Doing Dance, I suspect it may not be particularly easy? -

Not working for me? -
I only listen to The Archers accidentally, so to speak, but I totally agree with you! I'm hoping he will get his come-uppance eventually, though.

I KNOW. I was merely pointing out that if those living close at hand can't get home what does that say about people who have to travel a greater distance?- 186 replies

The Royal Ballet: Giselle, Feb-April 2016
alison replied to annamk's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Well, I have this theory: every time I get a really good balcony standing ticket for Osipova, it appears that she gets injured or something. I think she's probably been a no-show every single time I've got those. I have stalls circle for her third, so we shall see, I guess ... In the meantime, if anyone *would* like a balcony D standing for the 17th, do drop me a PM. Although I'm perfectly happy to see Nunez as Myrthe, she's in the third performance as well, and I've seen Lamb and Golding once already, so am not hugely bothered either way.- 500 replies

*Very* easily commutable from London - and New Street station is only a little over 5 minutes' walk from the theatre.

So sorry for both you and Janet I often feel really sorry for the staff in such situations: they're the ones on the front line, and tend to get all the stick from the customers. I had a bit of a similar situation a couple of months ago: my evening train home was cancelled, and I didn't want to wait half an hour just to find them trying to force the contents of my 8-coach train and the next, 6-coach, one into 6 coaches, so hopped on a fast train down to the major station beyond mine so that I could get the slow back up. There was a 6-minute connection slot. You guessed it: my train got delayed, and nobody told the staff to hold the up train, so it left just as I got onto the platform. Then the next up train was the one formed by the cancelled train, so that didn't run either. I ended up getting home after midnight - nearly 2 hours for what should have been a 20-minute journey! Anyway, this is getting really off the topic ...

Certainly looks like it, doesn't it? Must admit I'm surprised, because I never thought the Balanchine and Robbins trustees would have approved it, as I've said before.

If you were able to cast one magic spell, what would it be? Let's take things such as world peace, ending poverty/hunger, riches, good looks and so on as read, to make it more interesting. I ask, because a number of times recently I've seen somebody deliberately dropping litter, and thought what I'd really really like would be a magic spell that would make all the pieces of litter jump back up and attach themselves immovably to the clothing of the person who dropped it, or maybe to the car they dropped it from! I think that might be quite a disincentive to drop litter in the future, don't you?
