    Ah, of course. I'd have needed to get to London/Clapham Junction. OTOH, I don't usually look for combined tickets from home because I know they tend to be a rip-off, so perhaps I am still a bit surprised. I imagine I'd have put in Waterloo to Soton on the National Rail website. I suppose I *could* try getting to see Sleeping Beauty there - it'd solve the problem of trying to fit it in at Wimbledon during Holy Week - but the seating prices are horribly expensive. I really don't fancy paying over £20 for worst seats in the house. (If anyone spots a ticket offer, please post!)

    I'd be interested to know what the ratings were for the Acosta Carmen, which after all was shown on BBC4. After all, if a big name like that doesn't attract someone outside the usual balletomanes, what will?

    Thanks, Indigo - I suspected as much. Interesting that it was valid for the week BRB were down in Southampton, yet didn't show up when I was looking for fares back then - I might have gone to one of the matinees if I'd known Is there any other dance or anything down at the Mayflower before the end of April, does anybody know?

    My thoughts exactly, Sim. Although there *are* various cinema membership schemes which would reduce the price somewhat - Picturehouse members get a £5 discount (or I suppose it may be more - I'm going by the ROH broadcast prices), and I think Barbican Members get a discount at the cinema, at least.

    Indigo, thank you for your long comments, most of which I agree with - from what I could actually see of all 3 ballets! However, diverging from the actual programme, what I wanted to ask was what train company the £15 offer was with, and whether it operates in the other direction as well.

    Just finished listening to this (in the kitchen, no heating, so as not to disturb anybody), and I can only concur with others about the 3 principals, the conducting and the orchestral playing. It sounded beautifully clear in DAB. Only problem was the nameless member of the household who decided that the kettle absolutely had to be boiled in the middle of Lensky's aria (GRRRRRR!!), so I shall have to catch up with that on iPlayer while I have the opportunity

    I spotted this when it was first announced, but was too busy to comment. I remember Ms Verdy giving a talk to the London Ballet Circle perhaps a decade ago, and being struck by what a good and fascinating communicator she was. The film Violette and Mr. B only reinforces this opinion. I wish I'd seen her dance.

    I have to admit to being rather surprised when I read this: firstly because it's a "short" work, so that in itself seems rather unusual, and also because I couldn't see any obvious link between the subject-matter and the Bolshoi - unless of course the link is Osipova herself. On the other hand, it does have a commissioned score from a major composer, and I have no idea what the sets and costumes are like (I presume photos are embargoed at present), so it could be quite expensive, and the tickets are relatively cheap.

    Some tickets have now become available for several performances of this bill - largely at higher prices, it has to be said.

    Marvellous (for me, not for BRB). Thank you, Janet. Multiple bookings incoming - once I get home and have some proper internet access. And that definitely means I can stay for evening perfs of The Dream.

    Just discovered that my local WHS has done the same: and there I was thinking they'd discontinued selling it. It's surely not rocket science, though, is it? Just put it along with the opera and music magazines would seem to make most sense. But no ... Actually, this month's Dancing Times looked to me to be better - but it contains a number of letters complaining about the lack of ballroom coverage ...

    Sorry, obviously misread "what" as "who" I've said it before (so many times), but cinemas, companies and distributors really need to get their act together on this. There's clearly a market for the broadcasts, but even now, the problems I have trying to get information about them ... Twice in a not-too-local Odeon, 3 times in 3 different Picturehouses, I've tried to get hold of printed information about what is being shown and when, and getting blood out of the proverbial stone would be easier! And they *still* haven't really got the mailing lists together properly. I did get something from Picturehouses the other week, but again it's not laid out in a suitably list-like format to make it easy to read.

    Very sad to hear what's happened to Beth: I always thought The Jump was a good step - or even leap - too far. There are just some things you shouldn't do without proper training.

    We've had discussions previously in Doing Dance about how many ballet students don't actually seem to go and *watch* ballet. And when you think of the number of leading professional dancers who have said something to the effect that it was only when they actually went and saw their first ballet that they really "got" what ballet was, and that was what ignited the spark inside them ...
