  1. It was used in 1959 BBC TV broadcast in black and white. A one-off. I had this tutu for 50 years and sold it at auction in March of this year. Surprised to see it being sold so soon.
  2. This tutu is labelled Antoinette Sibley, Fairy Crystal, Sleeping Beauty. It is slightly different in the bodice from the one that appears on YouTube. I am not sure why or what changes were made but the straps are slightly different. The 3 tutus are being sold as one lot with a price estimate of £1,000 - £1,500 but it's all down the fans now! I just hope they end up with someone who loves ballet and can display them after a little restoration. Yolanda
  3. This is the tutu labelled Judith Sinclair, Fire Fairy, Sleeping Beauty. A name that only seems to appear in this made for TV production, the fairies are called Fairy Godmothers in the credits. All three tutus have the label Bonn and McKenzie. They dont have a Royal Opera House label because they were only used in the TV production, black and white, December 1959. The film was put onto YouTube after the March 2014 TV showing which was a great help to identifying the costumes. The Fonteyn one is from the Vision Scene in Act II. The Fire Fairy appears in the Prologue.
  4. Hello ballet fans everywhere! Some time ago I posted photos of 3 tutus whose provenance I was trying to obtain. Luckily for me, someone on this forum correctly identified them as coming from the one-off BBC 1959 made for TV Sleeping Beauty starring Fonteyn and Somes. The film was shown on a Darcy Bussell series about Ballet in March 2014. After holding on to these three tutus labelled Margot Fontey, Antoinette Sibley and Judith Sinclair, I decided it was time they found a new home. They are going under the hammer on March 10th courtesy of Dominic Winter Auctions (Cirencester). I know somewhere are fans who would love to own an old Fonteyn tutu so this could be your chance. I cant attach all 3 photos due to size limits but will try to post them in the thread if that is ok. Yolanda
  5. Hello again. I still have the 3 tutus and the estimates are the same from Kerry Taylor namely £2,000 - £3,000 for the Fonteyn and a measly £200 - £300 for the Sibley and Sinclair tutus even though the Sinclair Fire Fairy is the most stunning of the three. I was planning to put them in for auction next year thinking the centenary might be a good time to realise the best price but who knows! I saw earlier this year that Fonteyn's Firebird bodice didn't reach its reserve of £2,500 (from memory) which is amazing as it really is an iconic costume. I am wondering if anyone has another approach rather than an auction with a 15% commission charge.
  6. The Markova tutu was immaculate whereas my Fonteyn was was dusty so the auction house in Bristol had it steam cleaned which seems to have made it very dirty looking rather than clean. It was blue when I gave it to them. I also watched the Fielding auction.was fascinated watching her hats and scarves being sold as well as lots of her other things....was tempted!
  7. I wrote to the DT last year and they printed my letter asking if anyone knew where they came from. I think it was always the Fire Fairy that was my biggest challenge and in the SB 1959 film the fairies are not referred to by name, only as Fairy Godmothers which made searching all the more difficult. I am happy to spread the news if anyone is interested. I could contact DT again maybe....
  8. v Kerry Taylor auctions have put an estimate based on my photos of £2,000 - £3,000. Interesting!
  9. Really - on TV 3 weeks ago? That is remarkably good timing....maybe you are right and I should move swiftly! I wonder if we could stir up any media interest - it's a bit specialist though - but maybe worth thinking about.... thanks so much to everyone on this forum for the way they have cheered me up after the disappointment of the recent "buyer" - I wonder who thought a bid in an auction was binding? Yes, didn't we all...............
  10. I had contacted Kerry Taylor auctions already before the new info and had been told I needed more provenance so now I have it! I think in 2019 when it is Fonteyn's centenary will be the right time to sell them......till then they will have to remain in my loft and I will continue to dream!
  11. yes these are they - the Fire Fairy went on the cover of the auction sale catalogue much to my regret - I had already pulled it from the auction but they liked it for the cover - it did look nice I must admit. I don't know what I would ask for them now...would really need to think!
  12. On the subject of their quality, they don't seem to be shoddy in any way - I did think they might be late 1940s because they looked like they were done on a budget - basic compared to today's jewel encrusted bodices and skirts...I doubt that Bonn and Mackenzie cut corners but of course I could be wrong. The men's tunics are a different period from the ones in the film which seem a bit medieval (not sure that is the right term!) I was awake till 3 this morning with Sleeping Beauty music going through my head after having watched the newly found footage over and over again and taken stills from it with my mobile!! I am afraid to get my hopes up too much at the moment...I have contacted an auction house in London but they haven't replied so maybe they won't be interested...we shall see! I shall keep saying thankyou to Jane S for ever even if my tutus never sell - the end of 50 years of mystery for me!
  13. I entered the two famous named tutus in a recent auction. I didn't include the Fire Fairy for fear of challenging the authenticity of the others. Now we know where the Fire Fairy comes from, they go together as a package which is wonderful. At the auction the hammer went down below my reserve but the auction house were prepared to pay the difference but 8 days later he refused to pay the auction house as he was not satisfied with the provenance - thank heavens I hadn't spent any money in anticipation. I therefore set to trying to dig deeper into my research so the tutus were returned to me by special delivery yesterday. How very opportune! I do want to sell them. They are looking old and the Fonteyn tutu has lost lots of sequins from the skirt and the Sibley one has rusty marks from the various jewels on the bodice but hey they are almost 60 years old. I would love to think they would go somewhere to be displayed. Yes it's a fantastic story and if anyone has any means of getting some publicity please feel free! I am at work at the moment but tonight will be happy to send photos to anyone who wants me to!
  14. Jane - this isn't just any old help this is the culmination of years of research that had almost reached a dead end :-) I really can't thank you enough................................
