  1. I went with a friend to see Winter's Tale yesterday, despite snow and freezing temperatures and a difficult drive. It was well worth the effort as it was a wonderful performance. We were both engrossed in the story, Hirano and Cuthbertson were fantastic and conveyed the emotional journey to great effect. Great to see Sambe back, such a wonderful dancer and a lovely smile. The whole company danced so well it was a real pleasure to be there. I could see much detail in the cinema than from my usual position in the amphitheatre. We got home safely, though the temperature was -5 and the roads rather slippy, but well worth the effort.
  2. I too enjoyed seeing this online and am now looking forward very much to the rehearsal on Friday. I was glad I was able to get the rehearsal ticket as all the performances for this mixed bill are on a midweek evening. The lack of a matinee is very disappointing for those of us who live outside London, as the last fast trains are too early for a 10.30pm finish. Margaret
  3. Thinking back to some of the ballets I've taken my grandchildren and others to, I always tried to write a short story of the ballet for them and find some pictures to go with it. That makes it much easier for them to follow the story in the same way as the narrator does at the ENB shows.
  4. I have been to two of ENB's ballets for children with my granddaughter (now 5) and her parents. Cinderella this year and Sleeping Beauty previously. They are very well suited to younger children, with a narrator who explains the story. In Sleeping Beauty she was a grown up Aurora telling the story of her life. The atmosphere was very relaxed, so fine for young children and my granddaughter loved both ballets. The adults enjoyed Sleeping Beauty better than Cinderella, but my granddaughter was engrossed by it. I have taken my other grandchildren to the Opera house to see some children's ballets in the Linbury and also Fille in the main house. I would agree that Fille is a great one, not too long and lots of fun as well as beautiful choreography. I think they do need to be a bit older than 5 as the opera house is large and could be a bit too much for a young child, though the Linbury was fine. We have also seen The Snowman at the Peacock - which has quite a lot of dancing in and was much enjoyed. Hope that helps Margaret
  5. I too love the endings of Song of the Earth and Firebird, really wonderful. The moment that Juliet sits on her bed as the music swells is another heart stopping moment. There have been lots of mentions of Nutcracker - my favourite bit is Clara and Hans Peter's duet after the battle with the mouse king - such beautiful music and choreography.
  6. I too went to the matinee yesterday and it was a wonderful afternoon. The music is still going round my head. Loved The Dream with Hayward and Sambe and I agree with the comments about Yudes, a wonderful Puck. Symphonic Variations is a favourite of mine - just felt sorry for Reece Clarke with his costume problems. I agree with other posters, Joseph Sissons stood out for me. Ferri and Bonelli were wonderful in Marguerite and Armand, a really amazing performance and I am looking forward to seeing the cinema performances on Wednesday. Thank you zxDaveM for your wonderful photos.
  7. The book is called 'Girl's Book of Ballet' and was edited by A H Franks of the Dancing Times. My copy is dated 1954. I've just found the programme from 1950 - it is really a general booklet with lots of photos and a history of the company up until 1950, it doesn't list the dancers performing. I also have a programme from a visit in 1953 of the company performing Swan Lake - with June Summers as Odette and Robert Blake as the Prince. If that is of interest to you I can easily scan and send to you, the other might take some time! I hadn't looked in my box of old programmes for some time, so many happy memories.
  8. I remember International Ballet - they came to Coventry in 1950 and I attended a performance of the Sleeping Princess there with my mother. It led to a lifelong love of ballet and I still have the programme! One of my ballet books from that time has some lovely photos of her.
  9. I saw the same cast at the General Rehearsal on Wednesday and enjoyed most of the evening very much. I enjoyed Vertiginous which had a great cast. Loved Tarantella with Hayward and Sambe. They got a great cheer at the end and seemed quite surprised. I would love to see that again with those two wonderful dancers. Strapless I enjoyed a bit more than the first time, but still it doesn't do much for me I'm afraid. Symphonic Dances made a good ending and as usual Yanowsky was fabulous. Hay was also very good in the first movement. My only concern was the lighting, which was a bit dim at times.
  10. Some good things to look forward to next season, but disappointed that all of the MacMillan celebrations are only on on weekday evenings - with almost 3hr running times for 2 of them, that is difficult for me as my last train is 10.40!
  11. I agree with the comments about yesterday's matinee - a wonderful performance by all the dancers, especially Roberta and Alexander. Bennet Gartside was great as the Widow and Luca Acri as Alain. Went home with a smile on my face - just sorry that it seems to be the final performance by Roberta, we will miss her. Margaret
  12. Thank you for that information Barton22, did you receive the information as a Friend? I am also Friend but have not had any information about period1 casting as yet.
  13. Thanks for that, I agree he was great which is why I wanted to check who he was. I thought I saw a cast change for that role, but was obviously mistaken. I also thought Claire Calvert was excellent as Hermione. A really good performance by all.
  14. Loved Saturday's matinee performance of Winter's Tale - I thought Francesca Hayward and James Hay particularly wonderful, they dance so well together. I was also impressed by Hirano as Polixenes and also Soares as Leontes - you could see who this role was choreographed for. In all a wonderful afternoon at the opera house which was very full. Great to see Gary Avis as ever, does anyone know who danced brother clown? I didn't think it was Sambe as listed but did not pick up a cast change sheet.
  15. Tried this morning - no tickets now!
  16. A wonderful afternoon yesterday at the opera house - loved After the Rain and agree with comments about Reece Clarke, he was very impressive, as was Zenaida (as always). It was a beautiful ballet, both the music and the dancing which worked so well together. I enjoyed Strapless, but found it slightly confusing, despite having read the synopsis. Those of my companions who knew more about the painting and the artist enjoyed the ballet. We all loved Within the Golden Hour - the three couples did very well and we all enjoyed the duo of Sambe and Acri. A very good afternoon.
  17. We had a wonderful afternoon at the matinee today - Monotones was beautiful as Timmie has said. I really enjoyed Two Pigeons having last seen it in 1979. It was lovely to see younger dancers performing - both Akane Takada and James Hay were excellent. He did have a little trouble with the pigeon in the last scene but coped very well. Great ovation for all the cast at the end - well deserved.
  18. When the casting for period 1 ballet was announced, Friends were sent a link to the ROH site which listed all the ballets and casting in PDF format. I wonder if they will do this for the Winter season, as it was a very useful format to have all the details in one place. Margaret
  19. I went to the performance on Friday evening and have to agree with Duck that it was a wondeful occasion. Really loved Lamb and Bonelli in Afternoon of a Faun, but found In the Night rather badly lit which took away some of the effect from our view in the Amphitheatre. Song of the Earth wonderful - it is a very moving ballet - the music and choreography seem to me to fit together so well and the finale is very special (though I would have been happier if the applause had waited until the curtain has fallen). Ed Watson as ever was very special and I enjoyed Lauren's performance and her partnership with Hirano.
  20. I also really enjoyed last evening's performance at the cinema. After seeing it from the amphitheatre, I was looking forward to this live stream. I had the same misgivings about the lighting, it made it difficult to see all the detail of many scenes, though the closeups were fine. Such a pity as it was a wonderful performance.
  21. I too got the seats I wanted in the main house - but found that the Insight events were not on sale! It stated that they would be on sale from 10am. I posted a message on the ROH site and they have apologised for the mistake. Not a lot of consolation for those who were trying to get tickets, they are very difficult to get at the best of times (well actually almost impossible). There did seem to be a large number of seats already taken when I logged on at 8am, not sure how many were retained until 10am when phone bookings started.
  22. Like many others, the links section is the first one I look at and read and enjoy, so many thanks to all of you for the time you take to set it up each day. I often find items of interest that I would not have seen without these links. Thanks to all the team for an excellent service.
  23. Just looked at the ROH site and found that the seat next to the one I bought for the matinee on 30th is on sale at almost half the price I paid! The amphi does look very empty, but a matinee on a Tuesday is probably difficult to sell. Like others I do not get emails about these offers and I belong to the Friends. Margaret
  24. Has anyone seen any of the My 'First Ballet' programmes, which are designed for those aged 3 and upwards? I wondered how easy they were for 3yr olds to understand and how the stories were adapted. Swan Lake might be difficult for a young child, especially the ending. Margaret
