  2. Have to agree with you jmb about this production which I've just returned from seeing in Builth Wells. Loads of really exciting dancing, especially from Mattia Semperboni as Ali in the Pas de Trois, I don't remember ever seeing anyone turn so fast before in his solo. Really liked Nicolette Manni as Medora, loads of spirit and fabulous dancer. I did wonder what happened to the other characters on the ship, presumed drowned? All in all a really enjoyable evening and came out to a fabulous sunset over the river Wye. What could be better!
  3. Theatre half empty this afternoon so no problem getting seats but there was an enormous queue for tickets when we got there. Must have been people booking for Les. Mis not wanting to pay the booking fee.

  7. Just looked on the BRB site and there is casting for the Friday and Saturday night's showing - Jenna Roberts (Friday) and Nao Sakura and Chi Cato (Saturday), as already announced. This is really getting ridiculous!
  8. If you're travelling from London try checking Chiltern Railways from Marylebone as well as the Euston line as they often have cheaper fares.

They obviously have the casting in place well in advance as they were able to announce some time ago that Jenna Roberts will be performing in Romeo and Juliet on the Friday and Nao Sakura and Chi Cao on the Saturday as these will be their last performances in Birmingham. They actually want people there to say goodbye to them but it doesn't seem to matter that some people also want to see certain other dancers in the roles as well. I always maintain they would probably sell more tickets by announcing casts well in advance of performances as the general public will just book for whichever performance suits them by day of the week anyway but the ballet fans will book extra tickets to see particular dancers.
  10. Still no casts for Birmingham and they open next Wednesday. I really think it's a bit much leaving cast announcements this late. I hope the new director, whoever it may be, has a more enlightened outlook to announcing casting a bit further (or preferably a lot further) in advance.
  11. We were all handed earplugs on the way in when I went to see Hofesh Schecter's Grand Finale at the B'ham Rep in April and I was very glad of them. It's obviously a thing with him by the sound of it.

  13. I have just found my biography of Antoinette Sisley by Barbara Newman and in this she says she had to pull out of some of the creation of the role because of injury. " So before I started getting injured, we did the first Pas de deux, the bedroom Pas de deux, the bracelet Pas de deux, the solo, the Pas de trios, oh, we did a whole lot......So I had done those various numbers, but I hadn't done that adage with the boys and I hadn't done little bits where I'm concerned with other people because I'd never been with groups.I'd never put it together with anybody. I'd done the rest, except for the last Pas de deux - Jenny (Penney) created that - which I could never get together. I hadn't created it, so I could never remember it." This doesn't seem to me to be someone who "pulled out" of it and then changing her mind. I know Sibley had a lot of time with injury and she seems to have had both hip and knee problems at this time.

  18. There is also a screening of the La Scala version of Le Corsaire by Anne-Marie Holmes in June. This is on at the Barbican in London on 6th June (https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2018/event/teatro-alla-scala-le-corsaire-12a) and a seemingly eclectic range of cinemas elsewhere, such as Bridlington, Builth Wells, Chichester, Ripon and Shrewsbury, all on different dates. There may well be more but it's very difficult to find a complete list of screenings. Search your local area!
  19. Apologies for starting a new thread on this subject but I searched and couldn't find the previous one. As well as Northern Ballet's Casanova which is on Sky Arts tonight at 18.00 (this came up as Digital Theatre on my Virgin listing which had me confused at first), there is a repeat of Dancing in the Blitz: How World War Two Made British Ballet on BBC4 tonight at 00.30.
  20. Because for those of us who don't live in London it's cheaper and more convenient than going to the ROH and I get a much closer view. I go to the ROH quite a lot but if I'd gone to this programme I wouldn't have got home until 1 o'clock (for one and a half hours worth of dancing!). As it is I went to my local cinema 20 minutes drive away and was home by 10.45. I mainly agree with everyone's comments on the programme but, although not having seen Age of Anxiety before, I suspect it came over better in the cinema than the theatre. I was particularly impressed with Tristan Dyer but none of the facial expressions would have come over in the Amphi.
  21. A statement on the ROH website about pricing and seating plan. By dynamic does this means seat prices will change depending on demand or lack of? "A new dynamic price mapping tool is coming very soon. This will enable all customers to see pricing across the auditorium through a clear and easy to use online platform. We want to ensure that you have the best possible experience so are just making final checks before going live. We apologize for this temporary inconvenience and will ensure that all customers have access to seat price information well in advance of tickets going on sale." Apologies if this has already been mentioned before, I didn't want to trawl through all the posts.
  22. This was the first time I saw Fonteyn and Nureyev live. I had to beg my mother to allow me to go with a friend as I had never been allowed to go into the city centre at night before but it was worth it. I saw him several times after that, with the RB (especially memorable in Dances at a Gathering, where he made himself just one of the group not the "star" turn) as well as with other companies and his Nureyev and Friends groups. The last performance I saw him in was La Sylphide with LFB at Stratford where he was a shadow of his former self but still had that charisma, as others have said. I loved his Shades scene from Bayadere and wish this could be revived by either the Royal or another company.
  23. I agree with everything Douglas says. In the old days the casts were always on the leaflets for the weeks shows at whatever venue they were appearing (I still have some of these). I can understand not announcing casting when the subscription booking opens as that is too far in advance but leaving it to 2 weeks before performances is not good enough. We all know that the dancer we book to see may be off ill or injured but is the risk we are willing to take to see a favourite dancer or one who is new to a role. The general public will always book for the day of the week which is most convenient for them but if they see a dancer they really like they may be encouraged to see them again with enough advance notice. This may possibly grow your audience, as it is lack of casting just penalises the core audience of fans and means all the best seats are usually sold by the time you find out who is dancing. Let's hope that when a new director is appointed he/she will have a different viewpoint on announcing casting a little more in advance.
  24. Can I throw into the ring another name, Bruce Sansom, once tipped to be the next director of the Royal Ballet. He has all the experience and skills needed and also created several roles for David Bintley. I think Marion Tait and Desmond Kelly are both too old for the job, someone younger is needed and I agree Robert Parker would be an ideal choice but he may not wish to leave Elmhurst. I hope, however that Marion will remain for a few more years at least as she will be greatly missed as well if she leaves.
