  1. It’s sorted now after much trying. Hopefully it’s a good school. It only teaches ballet.
  2. Dear Ballet Co-ers, I have a good friend in Croydon whose three year old daughter is longing to start ballet classes and every time her mother has made enquires, she has not been contacted by the school in question. Another thing holding her back is my friend knows nothing about reputable schools in the area. Could you help us? I told her I was sure people here could. TIA.
  3. I saw Darcey dance Sylvia towards the end of her career and I thought she seemed uncomfortable in the role but those YouTube clips are absolutely wonderful particularly The Song of The Earth one. Thank you to the people who shared them.
  4. I loved Emeralds for its pure classicism and Rubies was so energetic and extraordinary that it forced me to love it. I think my husband’s main problem was that it wasn’t a narrative ballet but he has enjoyed other non narrative ballets and I know he will enjoy the Elgar piece because he loves Elgar. I am selfishly thinking that I don’t much mind if he doesn’t like the RB Act III of Raymonda as I have wanted to see it for years. Unfortunately it will only be the cinema simulcast as we live far too away from London now and associated travel cost make the exercise unaffordable.
  5. My husband was very upset by Jewels. I explained it was danced in different styles to evoke the different qualities of the stones but he still didn’t care for it. I loved Emeralds and Rubies but like Dawnstar, my husband felt it was dancing for the sake of it although he loved Symphony in C. I suppose no one likes everything.
  6. That’s a lovely review, Darlex. Extra Fiz would be a good thing right now for this Fiz as I had one whole hour of sleep last night!
  7. I believe he had a similar injury in 2002 and was told that he would never dance again. I am very glad that he proved his doctors wrong.
  8. Good luck with your result, Viv! I’m glad you managed to do the exam and hope you recover soon.
  9. This is terrible news about poor Stephen Mcrae. My heart goes out to him. He must be devastated.
  10. Oh no, Melody! That’s so sad. He always seemed to be a gentleman which is so rare nowadays.
  11. Would it be an idea to start a favourite dancers thread instead of accidentally derailing this one, for which I apologise?
  12. The posts about Bolle. It got me thinking about the feelings certain dancers evoke in me.
  13. Seriously, can you “be in love” with a dancer? I have several favourites who always move me tremendously and others who dance equally well, if not better yet they do not move me anything like the same way. “In love” is the wrong expression, I’m sure, but it’s akin to it. Is there even a proper expression for it?
  14. That reminds me of my youngest dd aged six. “I’m going to be a ballet dancer with the Royal Ballet and breed Persian cats in my spare time”! We had two Persians at the time and I said “ Ballet dancers are busy people, you know , and Persian cats need a lot of grooming”. She smiled sunnily at me and said confidently “I’ll find the time”!

    What's too old

Our own Dormouse is much older than you - I hope she forgives me for saying that! - and does ballet exams. Don’t let age hold you back, Sam.
  16. I have loved ballet since I was three from listening to Tchaikovsky, watching ballet on T.V, finally having ballet classes which were curtailed by the strongly academic school I attended. Then I started my hyperactive eldest daughter at ballet to try and use her energy productively and in the hope that she would love it too. Then her younger sister cried to join in during a watch class so she started and danced six times a week after she was 13 and she still dances in local shows although it is mainly tap, modern and quasi ballet rather than pure ballet plus we all love to watch it, my husband included.
  17. Given the sheer amount of classes and homework they have, I don’t find it surprising at all.
  18. No Curzons anywhere near us - the nearest is Sheffield or Knutsford which my husband refuses to drive to so I really do hope it’s on the T.V at Christmas.
  19. A couple of my dd’s “friends” used to try and talk her out of going to classes and deliberately organise parties on days that they knew she couldn’t attend and then tell her that if she really cared about them, she’d cut class. It eventually dawned on my dd that they weren’t really her friends. It might be peer pressure at school which is affecting your dd.
