  1. Well there are two courses in Seniors Dance or Musical Theatre & my Dd is going the MT route so there are others who may be able to comment better. If someone ONLY wants to do ballet it probably isn’t the right school but there is a lot more ballet there than at most of the more general dance/MT schools. The first year everyone is together & does everything (but ballet, jazz & Tap are streamed) There is ballet every day plus extra optional early classes then there are classes in jazz, tap, commercial, singing & acting. In the second year for MT students there is less ballet but the dance students have more ballet from what I’ve seen alongside jazz, tap, commercial & contemporary. They can also choose an elective, either singing or choreography. Therr are some very high calibre classical ballet teachers there (but Dd is looking forward to next year when she can do more jazz & singing!)
  2. Do you want to specialise in ballet or do you want an all round dance training? My my daughter is in the first year of Hammond Seniors and auditioned at several schools and colleges last year. We were told that the auditions were pitched at around Intermediate Level although many dancers she auditioned alongside were around Advanced 1. As an aside Be be aware that you won’t be allowed to just take Adv 2; you have to take Intermediate as a pre requisite.
  3. Same here. I thought it was going to be top of her list but after summer school she didn’t even apply to audition.
  4. Just shows how everyone is different. My dd really didn’t like it and said she could not see herself living there for 3 years.
  5. If a school hires teaching space or has back to back classes then sometimes teacher's are unable to offer private sessions for photos or lessons.
  6. I too am a bit confused and cross about the article. It appears that I have been guilty as I have run pre-school children's classes with unqualified teachers. (actually they were qualified but in Early Years Education or drama). My classes were general performing arts classes, a mix of dance, drama and singing. They were as others have said, not meant to develop technique (at 4 years old you are lucky if they can skip in time) but to develop creativity, musicality and imagination. I think that any dance teacher complaining about a 5 year old entering their class with poor technique and posture needs to spend a few weeks in a nursery or pre-school.
  7. My husband became ill last year and for a while it looked like he may never work again. His area is music and although he is back at work he has to live with a chronic condition. He has has insurance and we have no mortgage so he could have easily given up work. But The devastation when you think the art to which you have dedicated your life to cannot be under estimated.
  8. Incidentally she auditioned for and was offered a place at Abbotts Bromley School. This is an academic boarding school with a vocational strand (for the dance course the audition is solely ballet although other genres are are studied, dd was not offered this but was offered Musical Theatr). They have a lot of internationakl students. There is also Bedes/Legat although I don't know much about that course.
  9. Our daughter has found homestay the best option. She knew that she was not ready for independent living aged 16 and hence didn'tapply for the majority of colleges that others do. Howevere, havong spent some time in boarding too she preferes homestay. The family she is with treat her as their own and she is very well looked after.
  10. Great article. We know one of the dancers featured (or rather dh & dd do, I don’t. )
  11. I remember we used to give them out free when I worked at Symphony Hall. Then they started to sell them instead.
  12. Even Stanislavsky changed his mind on this subject as his theories developed.
  13. Hammond also are having a boys day of Dance and I believe there is an associate scheme in the East Midlands run by a male teacher. Taxi Ive liked your post. I can’t see the whole context as my settings are set so they don’t show posts from certain posters but I wholeheartedly agree with you.
  14. So by that reckoning ds who started dance aged 13 would have gone straight into Grade 8. (He’s currently working on Grade 2 jazz & Grade 3 tap).
  15. I agree with Colman, thats a big difference in age at that age and in terms of school its also a different Key Stage. She will feel like she is in with the babies (infants) in the Primary class rather than junior age children.
  16. I think the average 7 year old might find Primary a bit babyish (is she just 7 as in Year 2 at school or does she turn 8 this academic year - year 3?) But I agree with Colman that throwing a 7 year old beginner straight into Grade 2 is a bit much. I would maybe look for a different dance school.
  17. Each school will have their own methods of reporting & assessing so it’s difficult to say. From experience no one seemed to share their marks at Dds school.
  18. I contacted the moderators about this post. A very talented former student of my husband who originally trained in Dance & Musical Theatre at The Hammond before moving into Musical Directing write a beautiful choral piece for the Hammond’s Centenary Concert. What I didn’t know is that he was moved & inspired to compose the piece by hearing of the suicide of a former Hammond student Olivia Faulkner who several members of the forum knew. He would like to release an album to raise funds & awareness of mental health in dancers via the fund Olivia’s parents set up & has asked for help bye especially wants to get in touch with any former Hammond or Laine students who knew her who may want to get involved or indeed anyone who can help in any way with this undertaking. A link to his original facebook post is here.
  19. Its very confusing. There is Northern ballet Academy (linked to Northern Ballet who run part time CAT scheme and summer school classes. Then there is Northern School of Contemporary Dance who are a vocational school also based in Leeds with a focus on Contemporary dance Then there is Northern Ballet School in Manchester a full time college who run dance diplomas in Ballet or Jazz Theatre
  20. I'm not quite sure what to say to that image.
  21. I notice that the casting for this has just been announced. There are several young people that dd knows who are either current or past members of her school who have been cast including one who was in her year at lower school and one who is in her year now. Huge congratulations to them.
