  1. There are indeed many variables from year to year, and some dancers may be more suited elswhere. But such low numbers going on to US do make me feel uneasy. WL is supposed to be one of the world's foremost schools who have carefully selected dancers to train. It makes you wonder whether they are using the right criteria for selection in the first place, or whether there are any problems with the training. Also if there are many pupils who no longer want to dance, and there are injury problems it adds to the feeling of disquiet.
  2. So sad to hear this. I wonder who they are taking - competition winners from Prix de Lausanne and YAGP perhaps?
  3. Yes, some Ting 6th formers do keep their MDS. Edited to remove digression.
  4. Indeed a wonderful young man from a fabulous family! xxx
  5. I have had pupils who were offered (and accepted) MA places without getting WL finals. Having observed many of the classes as a parent chaperone or for teacher observation, I have come to the following conclusion. For entry to WL they are looking for a specific physique and style of dancer who would be suitable for RBS training. However, for MA places they seem to allow a wider definition of talent, so a dancer who shows real potential, but would not necessarily be suitable for WL may be offered a place. For SA places the parameters seem to narrow again (fewer places) to those most suitable for RBS training.
  6. People do get DADA places from the reserve list as those with multiple offers decide which school to attend. However, I have never known anyone who was invited to Funding audition not to be put on the reserve list. Do Tring still offer of places to people without inviting them to the funding auditions? Mods there seems to be a duplication of threads, perhaps they should be merged?
  7. I am no longer a member of the RAD as I preferred to return to my roots as a Vaganova teacher. However, some time ago I did have reason to call the RAD exam department about a student who had left me abruptly (another story) and was being entered for an exam by another school nearby - although she had only been there a matter of weeks. The RAD told me that many pupils have multiple registrations and that they could be entered for exams by any RAD teacher not the one they were originally registered with. It used to be that pupil's exam results were "credited" to the particular teacher that entered the pupil, now I am not sure what is happening, but it is not surprising that a teacher doesn't want the credit for years of hard work training a pupil to be then given to another teacher!
  8. Thanks - Mayflower date great as a back up in case I can't do London. One of my favourite companies!
  9. Depends where you are in the world - it comes from Italian for female dancer and Spanish has a similar word. So it tends to be used as a rank in mainly English speaking countries.
  10. I find that using a flash produces unwanted shadows, so I always turn it off, and use the computer to brighten if necessary. Edited for spelling
  11. This does seem to happen from time to time at Tring & Elmhurst. However, as I understand it, the offer has to be accepted immediately and all the formalties completed or the offer is withdrawn, i.e. if the dancer accepts they cannot attend any finals anywhere else.
  12. I have had pupils go to Central summer school and really enjoyed it. Good teaching in caring environment.
  13. Chatting to my Yr 9 pupils about their GCSE options last night, I asked if any were going to do Dance. To my surprise they told me that it is not an option anymore in most schools in this area, but that there is a Dance strand within the PE GCSE. The schools that no longer offer GCSE dance of course no longer offer A level dance either. Have other people encountered this? Another thing that really horrified me is that one of the Girls Grammar schools is now asking Yr 8 pupils to choose their GCSE options! Surely this is far too young.
  14. Ha ha, appreciate that Spanner - one of my dd's teachers at her previous academic school (up to GCSE) said she was the only pupil she had ever had where Oxbridge was Plan B!
  15. As both teacher and mum. I have suffered comments such as "How could you make her" i.e. train as a dancer. My reply is usually, "I didn't make her, I wouldn't have been able to stop her!"
  16. I still have a glossy brochure dated January 2009 outlining all the plans for the new school and student accommodation. It had a "tear off" FREEPOST addressed post card for people to fill in and send to Southwark Council in support of the plans. A few months later it was announced that planning permission for the school had been refused.
  17. Exam results are about the past - i.e. what the candidate has learnt. Auditions are about the future, what the audition panel believes their school can do with the candidate. The two are not always the same, many dancers with excellent exam results do not have the attributes to be a professional dancer.
  18. Vision of long term goals, and how to achieve them rather than today's common "short-termism!"
  19. I have found exactly the same as hfbrew, whether for my own dd or other pupils. Associate teachers are always happy to talk about the pupil, and I got the impression they appreciate this, as it shows a level of commitment from the local teacher.
  20. Congratulations Katymac - Sarahw is right, that's why we're here!
  21. Akram Kahn - one of today's major contemporary dancers and choreographers also began his training in the classical South Asian dance form Kathak and incorporates elements of it in his work.
  22. Just Ballet - how does the fitting of Grishko and Russian Pointe compare? I have a bunch of girls with extremely narrow, shallow feet (must be an odd gene pool round here). They are in Grishko at the moment as that is the narrowest we have found so far. I am not keen on Gaynors for beginning pointework, although I do allow them later.
  23. http://www.nationaldancecats.co.uk/ This is a link to the main website. It is a scheme where talented dancers are identified and given extra training. Some are classical, some contemporary and some urban. Edited for spelling
  24. Not all contemporary CATs start at 10 or 11, Laban only starts from age 13. I think this is because although there are different contemporary techniques, they are all much more "grounded" and need a more mature body.
