  1. Yes it is strange! Any other competition publishes the results quite quickly of who has got into the next round. It would seem the schools have been sworn to silence too.
  2. Did you have a post-show Q & A session? It was very interesting to hear Mark Bruce talk about his inspiration and vision for the piece. Jonathan Goddard, and some of the other cast members came out too. Almost as a paradox, they came across as nice and down to earth, although of course they are exceptionally talented people. I would second everything Sim says about Dracula above. My previous experience of Mark Bruce's work was "Made in Heaven" the last work he did in UK before Dracula. It was very different and quite surreal. Both DH and I loved it and just talking about it brings a broad grin to our faces! Edited to add last paragraph
  3. If at all possible try to get some extra coaching and go ahead with the exam this December to get it done. The new syllabus is so radically different it will take a long time to learn and prepare for the exam. Good Luck to all those taking it this session.
  4. Isn't there a list anywhere of those who were successful, like they do for Prix de Lausanne?
  5. One thing I have learnt over the years is that everyone's feet are different. Just as our faces are all made up of the same components, eyes, nose, mouth etc. but we are still totally individual. It is great that there are so many different brands, models and fittings available. Finding the perfect shoe is like the quest for the Holy Grail! No one brand will suit everyone and I am surprised that some vocational schools still insist on the same shoes at mass fittings!
  6. What a lovely story! I find before class that there is also a problem. Many of my older girls come by bus direct to ballet from school, and never wear warm enough clothes. So they arrive chilled to the bone and warming them up enough to even start barre can be really difficult - lots of marching and jogging seems to be the best way!
  7. Saw it last week in Poole - brilliant. I managed to see it on the first tour last year and it is even tighter and more sharply honed now. Enjoy!
  8. The reason they ask for socks is probably so that the children can easily take them off to enable the panel to asses their bare feet. With older children who would be in tights, Associate schemes often ask for "transition tights" which have a hole under the sole of the foot to allow the tights to be rolled up round the ankle, again to show bare feet.
  9. Wells entries close today 6pm - so hurry if you are interested!
  10. Not very original - that quote re taller girls comes from Morcambe & Wise, and possibly is even older!
  11. I was reading an article recently about networking at Prix de Lausanne for those who attend, but don't make it through to the final. (Sorry I can't remember where it was published). On a very positive note, it said that it is not just the finalists who get seen by school directors and company Artistic Directors. During the week they look at everyone, and many non-finalist dancers were offered opportunies to further their training/career. So best of luck to your DS, just by attending he is marked out as a special talent. However, we will all be cheering him on and hoping he gets a prize!
  12. Unless you are waiting for a funding audition you only have a relatively short time to accept an offered place and pay the deposit. I'm afraid you can't wait until you have done all your auditions before deciding.
  13. Congratulations CeliB. Usually they list candidates own nationality, the school and the country it is in. Having said that, there are some candidates whose nationality is shown as being different to the country of location of the school. Edited to add last sentence.
  14. http://www.prixdelausanne.org/candidates-selected-for-the-2015-prix-de-lausanne/ The list of selected candidates for 2015 has been published on their website. You need to scroll down the text to where there is the link to the list. Just one British girl has been chosen, Natasha Watson from Ballet West. Congratulations to her!
  15. I think it is totally out of order to attack a child in public. Personally I have a lot of time for the Beckhams, they both came from humble backgrounds but were blessed with talent. They only achieved their success by hard work in very competitive fields. Victoria trained at a Vocational school, Laines and got her big break at an audition. You don't become a top footballer by accident either!
  16. Swanprincess, the Vaganova system of training does not teach going from the lumbar spine for cambré. As described above it also starts with an elongation upwards and outwards. As upper body training is very important in all Russian training, the end result is a very pliable and flexible spine.
  17. If this is so, then it means those who had a DaDa and left straight after A-levels can have student funding, but those who stay on for the 3rd year for the Trinity Diploma can't!
  18. This can't be so, many dancers who have benefited from DaDa funding have (for whatever reason) stopped dancing and gone on to study at normal universities with normal student funding.
  19. It can be difficult to follow the path of Tring's dance course graduates, as although some go straight into employment, many go on to further dance training - often a degree based course as they are entitled to Student finance.
  20. I always take photos sitting astride a chair which is reversed so I can lean my hands on the chair back, while holding the camera. Another tip I got from a professional is to be quite a long way from the dancer and then zoom in, it minimizes distortion. Lastly, try to avoid using a flash unless you have professional reflectors etc. It can creat weird shadows on the background which make the dancer look fatter. If the photos are a bit dark you can brighten them on a computer.
  21. I shouldn't worry about not showing enough technical skill in your solo, they will have been able to see that in class. The solo is more about you as a person and performer, so you can't be too expressive.
  22. I've just seen that RBS have extended the deadline for applications for 9 Nov so perhaps they haven't confirmed places yet because they haven't enough people for that day.
  23. taxi4ballet - they go oink as they flap! Seriously though, I agree. Like many grand schemes, in theory it is wonderful but in practice it just isn't working. It is horrendous that the auditors of the EU haven't been able to sign off the accounts as being accurate for years. Does anyone know the last time they did? If it were a commercial enterprise it would have gone bankrupt long ago, with many charges of fraud. Can it ever work - I don't know. It would be nice if it did but I have serious doubts.
  24. Likewise, I agree with all the above. There is such worry about children being "groomed" and exploited in real life, cannot people see that such sexualisation of young children is not right just because it is on stage or tv.
