  1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgQuLZH_F28 If it is Freddie Mercury/Queen & ballet you want, then you will love this!
  2. I too would suggest going to NIDMS or contacting the Dance Again Foundation at http://www.danceagain.org/. This was set up by the parents of Jack Widdowson who overcame horrendous injuries from a mugging where he was left for dead, but is now fully recovered and dancing professionally. These experts really will know how to treat the problem, and I must say I am surprised that your friend has not been advised of their existence before.
  3. One of my pupils is in the 3rd year at Urdang on the Degree course, she went at 18. The daughter of a friend is in the 3rd year of the Diploma, she went at 16. Both have loved being there. I am not entirely sure of the different structure of the two courses but I believe they have had some classes together and they both seem to do the same Urdang shows, and of course are now both going to auditions to find their first jobs.
  4. There was an announcement I saw (possibly on their Facebook page) that they have extended their closing date for applications to 7th April.
  5. http://londondance.com/articles/news/bbc-young-dancer-category-finalists-announced/ Finalists have been announced - it would be nice if they said which schools they came from!
  6. I do like to have this information about opportunities for young people. Then I can pass it on to pupils who might be interested. It can be hard keeping up with everything on offer otherwise.
  7. The school has a list of a host families. Older students often just share flats. Dd was on the reserve list some years ago for Rambert but chose to accept an offer from another Vocational school.
  8. It is definitely considered to be in the 1st division of Vocational schools in UK. Their mission as stated on their website is to train equally in Classical and Contemporary techniques, however in the world of dance there do seem to be fewer classical jobs each year and more contemporary ones, but nobody can really predict the future. The course is a BA (Hons) degree, so I don't know if you have any access to student loans in NZ as I doubt you would be eligible for funding here.
  9. Most professional dancers use elastic on their pointe shoes in addition to their ribbons - look carefully at photos and you can often see it. Most just go from the heel in a loop around the ankle, but some do a criss-cross like on soft shoes
  10. Best wishes - hope your DD is responding to treatment and getting better.
  11. Thanks, I've just downloaded the guide. So are the narrowest sizes in Grishko and Russian pointe similar, or is one narrower than the other?
  12. I hope they do the same in Southampton! Is the information on the Trocks website or the theatre's?
  13. The school attached to Nothern Ballet company in Leeds is Northern Ballet Academy. It has a very good reputation and has been discussed in this forum - there is lots of information on the website. It has a classical CAT and the Graduate training course takes in graduates from schools such as ENBS and Central. Some dancers from this course then join the company.
  14. They usually have two auditions, one in the summer term and one right at the beginning of the Autumn term in September.
  15. Many years ago after an RAD exam session the Examiner said that she knew she wasn't supposed to ask - but couldn't resist! I hadn't really taught the Grade 4 Pas de Bourrée exercise in the way the girls had shown had I? She proceeded to demonstrate. They had gone in the opposite direction, turning it into the more advanced Pas de Bourrée couru, i.e. travelling towards the extended foot instead of bringing it in towards the other leg. I assure her I hadn't and we both had a good laugh. I doubt it affected the end mark.
  16. More good news - well done everyone! Incidentally I heard from a teacher friend whose dk is on the reserve list for DADA funding at Tring, that not everyone who went to the funding audition got on the reserve list, she knew of some who weren't.
  17. Congratulations to all the successes - a new exciting chapter in your life will soon begin. Heartfelt commiserations to those who didn't get the answer they were hoping for this time.
  18. Told DD about this discussion and she made that point that an MDS award covers both training fees and boarding costs while a DADA only covers training fees. So if MDS awards are only available for day pupils, as the boarding spaces have already been allocated to those who will pay out of their own pocket, does this have any overall financial impact, either on the number of MDS awarded, or on the total amount of fees the school receives?
  19. But at what level does he mean? It may be that the graduates are good enough, but that he can't find soloists/principals with that extra bit of magic! Rather a throw away remark really.
  20. Exactly Tulip - everyone hopes these students will go on to be successful in whatever career path they follow. It is the establishment and the way it is being run that is under scrutiny.
  21. Actually I care very much what my taxes are doing! There are so many deserving individuals and organisations that are in desperate need of funds, whether in the Arts, Health care, Education or many other fields.
  22. I think this level of scrutiny is fair. All WL students are supported by MDS (depending on income level) i.e. supported by all of us who pay taxes. Even if you don't pay income tax, practically everything you buy (apart from food) is subject to VAT. So it is not unreasonable to ask if our money is being spent wisely, quite apart from the fact that members of this forum have their own particular interest in ballet.
  23. These days it is getting just as difficult for non EU nationals to get work permits for UK as it is for Europeans (and others) to get permits to work in USA. It cuts both ways. Another thing I have always wondered is how the waiting list for RBS is managed alongside the fact that places are sometimes offered to dancers at the Summer School for both US & WL. Does this mean they keep a few places back just in case?
