  1. much the same as those who deride Geography as the lesser of the humanities subjects ' it's all colouring in ' ... although it;s a complete tangent Nursing has stayed rather less prescriptive over subject choice at A level / level 3 , in part becasue there is less biochem and pharmacology that medicine / pharmacy / pharmacology / biomed and there isn;t t the need to grip physics in the way the radiographers ( both diag and therapuetic ) do
  2. Technique is not necessarily an issue at the age in question (i.e. technique otherwise, strength , stamina may be there) it's the bone age / maturity of the structures of the foot that are at risk and that's why you will tend to find people suggesting 11, 12 or even later to protect the foot from damage esp unsupervised use and excessive centre work en pointe.

sometimes you have to re -report or appeal the computer generated message for actio nto get taken however they seem to have a novel interpretation of 'ma's freeze peach ' means
  4. indeed , i think one of the others mentioned in the thread says omething along those lines ... there are also some 'alternative' seamstresses //tailors about who would quite happily run something up . also ( although i don;t know aobut price ) apparently Gandolfi will do just about anything if you ask ...
  5. go for the thigh high split look with wrap skirts ?
  6. have you considered looking at some of the bags designed as general gym bags or even for triathlon etc , often with shoe poacket,s messh pockers for wetstuff / airing stuff ... lookingat dance bags sold by dance brands seems to be kaching time ... ( same a miraculously the same plastic toolbox is twice as expensive in 'rescue orange' with white drawers/trays than in grey + grey or brown and beige ... )
  7. some might argue that looking for both success in vocational / associates admissions and success in festivals may be incompatible ... I do know some teachers who dispair about what festivals and the 'freestyle' (i.e. what used to be called disco) are becoming in the lght of 'Dance Moms ' and some of the X factor style dance competitions promoted by TV companies, where the 'dance' seems to be a collection of stunts and enchainments with the emphasis on the stunts being dramatic and excessive - and technique closer to contortion or RSG than to ballet or contemporary.
  8. which awarding bodies are most often used tends to be a bit locality specific , although RAD for ballet is a common , primarily because the RAD awards are linked in the minds of many with the high profile organisations in the ballet world .... which can lead to a 'self licking lollipop' moment ... also the question has to asked which is better ?- Is it a mediocre school doing awarding body A 's syllabus or is it a good school doing lesser know awarding body D or E 's syllabus but getting people into vocational schools / none awarding body tied associates / HE study in dance even if they have to retake some awards in a different awarding body at some point ... ifyou aren;t carefull this could all get a bit Hogwarts with mudbloods and the like ...
  9. any particular reason so focus in on those two awarding bodies , rather than saying find out what (if any) awarding bodies the school is registered / affiliated with ... or do you have a particular reason to ignore or exclude IDTA, BBO , BATD or any of the other CDET member organisation ?
  10. Leeds one getting closer ... and patience pays off ! i think the lesson especially for the Leeds august bank holiday date is to book early , fortunately for me i've got ap lace off the waitlist .
  11. If he has never taken class before , adult or teens ( depending on the offer and the studios operational policy re protecting adults from brats ) beginners sounds like the right place. i did MT as an extra curricualr at school and although there is a big gap in time between that and me starting ballet classes , adult beginners is where I am ( even though we are more of an improvers class now as the regular attendees have been attendign for a while or are 'returners' ) The use of the term 'classical ballet' is possibly a little misleading as most ballet classes are 'classical' in that even if freework they will tend to follow roughly in the style of one of the awarding bodies ( either that which the teacher took themselves or that which they teach their graded students ) vs being at the ballet end of the contemporary dance spectrum . If you look at the more well regarded contemp and MT courses in FE and HE there is often some element of 'classical ' ballet training in the course and in some of the contemporary dance degrees out there 'class' time i nthe studio is a near 50 /50 split classical ballet and contemp ( as can be seen by those courseas also wanting VGE/ majors in ballet as part of their entry req)
  12. also years 5 , 6 and 7 age range iirc Elmhurst start with y7s , the age range is more JAs isn't it ...
  13. swimming is good because of the limited impact it has on the joints vs running etc
  14. @sophie_rebecca was teasing aobut flicflac on twit this morning ... and teasing about The Ballet Retreat as well..
  15. i suspect the licence with regard to jet glue is the fact that solvents and various of the flammable glues require various stuff to be in place before a retailer can stock them i suspect that the local DIY megashed or if you have a old school hardware will have a suitable alternative as from what i can see in termsof google it;s just an cyanoacrylate glue and the use of the term jet glue is a symptom of the US need to use trade names at all times ( e.g. tylenol and advil rather than paracetamol / aectawhatever the USAN is for paracetamol and Ibuprofen - although Ibuprofen is bad example as people in the UK still do tend to use the orginally Boots/Crookes trade name of Brufen)
  16. like any job there a pushes and pulls if the pulls from elsewhere are strong enough you'll move , whether it;s pay , your 'rank' / 'grade' ( and subtle gradiations within that) or other terms and condtions ... if the pushes are strong enough you'll seek the opportunties elsewhere even if it means losing pay or status - if it means you have a better work / life ballance , if it means you feel happeir etc etc Also someotimes you don;t 'fit' - i had a job a good few years ago, I got on with the management, i got on with colleagues, i did the job perfectly adequately, but it didn;t ' fit' , so management and I chalked it up to experience for both of us and i moved on with their full blessings and support having 'ticked off' working in that particualr environment as part of my wider development ...
  17. hopefully it'll be something that will reduce the impaqct of the psychological bars to men taking class, i think the real push with promoting ballet for adults should be the core strength stuff ... and to pinch the whole 'do you even lift' thing how aobut some shirts with a silhouette of dancers doing a lift and the " do you even lift ? " phrases much beloved of soem of the gym going types ... 'i think a lot people all ready have ' ballet , like a sport but harder' stuff ...
  18. next she'll be asking them ' do you even lift ? ' ... ' how about a girl insteadof dead weights ' ...
  19. in the 'bad old days' when women;s serious gymanstics was turning into girls gymansitcs(they now have quite strong minimum age limits) missing training or an injury was 'career ending' in that they might grow or start developing boobs etc ... but this has to be considered in the realms of the western orld doing everythign they could within the rules to remain competitive with the communist propaganda sports machine
  20. i agree with all you comments, and as someone who has a professional background in Nursing and who didn't 'train' as an RN being of an age when we were into 2nd and a bit bit generation HE pre-reg courses the mindset that a University education can and should provide is a big thing, and without harping on it;s something which is still a tension in Nursing as senior management are still mainly 'trained' Nurses rather than those who were educated ( nevermind socialisation across the whole profession and Stockholm Syndrome in the early P2k Diplomates) I don't think any career is going to be linear in the way we have traditionally known it / seen it ... even my friends who are Medical Practitioners (doctors) , and despite a system that designed to funnel people into a sausage machine of specialist training , all seem to have taken advantage of the 'step -on, step -off ' points to travel, do research / teaching or teaching / education degrees / do out of program type jobs ....
  21. inter-branch stock problems are not confined to the supermarkets ... as for where supermarket home deliveries come from it also depends o nthe store having the space for the parking of the vehicles and the necessary back of shop space for the loading bays etc it needs ...
  22. in the tesco version , you register using your clubcard , then each time you shop , you scan your clubcard at the issuing 'wall' and it allocates you a hand scanner, as you walk around the shop you scan stuff as you pick it up and can therefore pack it yourself how you want in your own time , at the end of the shop you go to a dedicated area with dedicated staff and modified self service tills, the 'gun' downloads your shopping to the till and you pay , human intervention by staff is needed in some cases ; i.e. stuff with anti theft tags, the aforementioned restricted items ( booze, knives, lighter gas, sniffable glue etc ) or if you get selected for an audit ( which is usually 5 or 10 items, although i beleive the Ts+Cs allow for a full trolley audit)
  23. How many hours a week of dance does your DD have on her time table... as the OP looks to almost as much in the week as is timetabled at the vocational schools based on what i've read on this site and on the schools own materials.
  24. all depends on the critiera and the reference point of performance for pass ... ( as famously demonstrated by those who fail to appreciate why the pass mark in many UK acdemic exams is 40 % ) US systems seem to presume that a perfect mark is possible , UK systems often make than perfect 100 almost unattainable ( to get 100 in a exam or essay based HE module in the Uk would be work that is publishable as it stands ) unless it's solely quantative answers ( tests of recall or 'sums' type maths ) or multiple guess
