  1. I think that is a significant factor as she is seen as British Home Grown etc etc... With respect to the comments about presenting etc. Surely someone with that level of public recognition has the opportunity to steer work they are asked to br involved with in one direction or another. Although there is always the fear of being typecast...
  2. Jade it's tyoically going to depend on the 'rules' of studio and how enforced they are for teens / adults ... There's also a bit of 'collective think' some places you mught find the rules being pushed if there are any or just a habit of people where leggings, sports bra and vest or t-shirt where ither places with the same absence of rules might have classes where people tend to be in leotard / tights/ wrap skirt / cardi and leg warmers ...
  3. i think that is part of what makes TBR so enjoyable , the fact that David , Hannah and co who make up the faculty know just how to pitch stuff to make it accessible but not to seem that it's being dumbed down for the sake of it.
  4. hopefully the answers you given about proper corrections and the way in which technique is defned and nuanced in ballet compared to other forms, even among the more neo classical companies be they Joffrey, Northern or New Adventures etc ... As an aside there are a number of degree level Contemporary Dance courses in the UK where students spend as many hours in ballet class as they do in Contemporary class...
  5. sums it up really, while pro company classes will show that even at company level people dress 'properly' for class , it is important to know why they do. one of the differences between ballet and modern/ jazz is the precise way in which technique is defined in ballet ... turnout begins in the hips and the big muscles of your bum and goes all the way down the leg ... wearing tights / tight leggings allows the teacher to see you are using your muscles and bones properly - which is why if you go back to videos of Company classes , you'll see the men in skin tight fitting leggings/' tights or bare legged once warm as well as the ladies ... yes i've seen someone who is a ex -principal dancer and ex - 'big five' Ballet Master teach a (not strictly ) ' company class ' in baggy ' basketball player' shorts ... but when he's demonstrating something those shorts get rolled right up to 'hot pant' length ... as has been said ballet skirts can hide a multitude of skins / insecurities yet also be sufficently translucent to allow the teacher to see what your hips etc are doing ...
  6. Merry Christmas to all this christmas is poignant for me fro ma personal point of view as a last / first kind of thing ...
  7. Hannah likes to keep people guessing with the rep ... I personally think it;s all part of the fun . i'm going to be in Leeds from sometime on Friday as it;s also LFF and a chance to catch up with some of the even more colourful than the ballet lot ... i'm staying in the travelodge on Blayd's Yard ( for those who were at August's TBR it;s the one above where some of us went for the Thai meal on the Sunday)
  8. there is also the inconsistency of titles between companies , as extreme examples in the UK compare at the number of dancers RB give the title of 'Principal' , and then compare that to the 2 Premier Dancers ( javier T and Pippa M ) Northern Have , although it;s Leading (and First ) Soloists are de facto 'principals ' in the way the Company refers to them and presents the structure of the company in public facing materials ... tired of touring - I think that;s a matter of the fit between the company and the performer ... some companies are ' on the road' a lot more than others - and RB are more statics than the other ' big five' ( or however many it;s actually decided the 'main companies ' in the UK are - as the 'big five' (RB, ENB, BRB , Scottish and Northern ) for the MacMillan stuff didn't include a Welsh company and (logically) didn;t include companies centred around another choreographer/ creative producer ( e.g. New Adventures etc ) I've talked of pushes and pulls in recruitment and retention in another thread on here before, and related it to some of my 'past life' in healthcare settings ... some people move because they are being pulled by another job , others seek another job because their current employer is pushing them way - whether that is actively or passively. Unless an individual comes out and blatantly states why ... ( i do get the impression from others that ENB is not necessarily a happy place - i do know of someone who 'disappeared' following injury and another big life event who is really dismissive of them )
  9. ply spot your favourite NB company member(s) and/or Rhinos player(s) in the pics or the video ...
  10. The specification of contact hours, self study hours and so on in qualifications comes from applying the rules from school exams ( timetabling based) and Higher education ( to create module 'values' ) to all QCA awards they are only really a guideline . One pain in the backside with specified hours is the First Aid at Work course ... you need to specified contact hours if there are 10 -12 candidates per trainer but if it;s 4 or 6 candidates on the courses you fly through the practical teaching , even with extra practice and the levle of correction that you can give with a small class but you have to do the contact hours ...
  11. Teaser Message from Hannah on the TBR facebook page , promising 2018 dates soon. https://www.facebook.com/theballetretreat/
  12. depends on the deal also depends on what the visa scenario is like ( both ways) potentially we see a scenario where the UK companies have a more British corps and the movement internationally in and out of the UK happens at soloist level as at that point the companies will be able to make the justification for visas etc.
  13. fabulous early christmas present for those who have got a yes ! , collective well dones to the YP ( and their long suffering parental units !)
  14. to Quote Mrs Doyle from Father Ted " ah go on , go on , go on , go on , ya will , ya will , ya will " ...
  15. Yes, there are a number of threads and a number of regular posters have attended. They do fill up quickly especially the summer one , watch the actual TBR website closely ... in the second week of January as the spring date(s) and the summer date may well appear there if I know the workings of HBs mind ... last year the August date was full by mid Feb ( but some places did come up on the watign list but not until quite close to the dates - how do i know this ? the 'old' me made it onto August's from that waiting list ) i don't think it;s crass or boastful to suggest that the teaching is world class and the venues are world class as well. that said it;s also extremely accessible and David Kierce has the ability to be teaching at Advanced / Pro level one minute and the next minute be teaching someone who is a genuine beginner . the Leeds ones are fabulous for the space in the Northern Ballet Building - August;s we basically had the run of the building for the weekend meaning our 'company class' was in the Stanley and Audrey Barton Theatre in Studio mode ( 30 metre * 15 metre usable floor space in studio configuration ... even with the divider across it;s 15 *15 as are 6 of the ?7 'numbered' studios in the building ... can't comment on the London edition using Rambert Studios but @sophie_rebecca could as she's done at least one of the London TBRs if not more ... Leedsi n august we also had the advantage of Andrew Dunlop as pianist - he is one of Northern;s company pianists ...
  16. seems to me that' the this a balance to be struck # tell people the casting early - those who want to see / not see a particular dancer are happy UNLESS illness / injury / massive dummy spit causes a change of casting ( and not just of the your favoured / disfavoured dancer regardless of rank - as the loss of one performer doesn;t necessarily mean a straight substitution as it seems to be straight theatre or MT , but a whole reshuffle based on the choreographer / director / company preferences and pressure and a domino effect as a solosist steps up to cover a leading or principal and a junior or coryphee steps up to cover them and so on and so on ) tell people the casting late - those with preference to cast moan , but you don;t have to deal with questions and moans if the casting has changed ( and speculation as to whether someone has had a dummy spit or is pregnant etc etc when it might be that they've just twisted something or had a dodgy curry and got food poisoning and be advised to take a few days / weeks off full on work )
  17. You can thank the infrastucture renewal program begun by one Mr Harris 70 some years ago for the state or otherwise of the German railways ...
  18. Additional to this , Jess as mentionrd in the OP will do custom sizing
  19. In a lot of settings it is . I currently work in the private sector in something which isn't service/ life critical ( although for some of us being deprived on the product we supply might be seen as life ending / altering ) , the building i work in will be closed from 2359 24/12/17 to 0001 26/12/17 , and the dept i work in will be closed from 1400 on christmas eve until 0700 boxing day ( and from 1400 NYE to 0700 new years day) - these closures reflect the fact the products we send out won't be beign collected on christmas eve and there won;t be deliveries on christmas day, boxing day and new years day ...
  20. ah ballerina vs Ballerina and to a degree academic in the English speaking world as Ballerina is not a rank / grade within English speaking companies. there is't even consistency in the English names of the ranks e.g. Northern's First Soloist(s) are considered 'Leading artists' along with the Leading Soloists and the the 2 Premier Dancers - Northern having 4 ranks of soloist ( Leading , First , <plain> and Junior ) AND Coryphees compared to the royal ballet having a larger number of dancers ranked as principals ( even disregarding those who a guest principals) and only 2 ranks of soloist
  21. Typo corrected , didn't see it until after the editing period had closed on my original post.
  22. Is there evidence one way or the other ? across all kinds of settings i've met people who are expert practitioners and rubbish teachers as often as i've met expert teachers who are great teachers... Hopefully those accepting invitations to be part of the faculty at these kinds of thing at least like to teach ... one also hopes that the organisers have made their decisions on whom to ask wisely ...
  23. FLA, MLA ( not politicians ones) and ETLAs all add to the fun of jargon ...
  24. it sounds very much like the Trinity diplomates are in much the same position as those who did 'Advanced Diploma' p re-reg Nurisng courses , there;a module or two and the dissertation to ' top up' to the honours degree
