As I recall, the highway code states that a cyclist should not cycle along the inside of a vehicle that is indicating left at a junction. The reason for this is visibility and should be a matter of common sense on the part of the cyclist.

In theory, it is perfectly obvious why no cyclist in their right mind should ever do such a stupid thing.  In practise, it is much more tricky! Many times a car has hurtled past me as I am cycling up to a junction, and then started to turn across me.  They may, or may not, have indicated their intention.  Taxis are the worst, as they pull out of the cycle lane behind me, then sweep across in front of me.

I'm another one who is always extremely wary of cyclists. Our roads are full of potholes so I sort of assume that they will not keep cycling straight. and in any case there are just as many horses and tractors.

Junctions as described above are horrible, as are roundabouts and always bring back horrific memories for me. My brother used to cycle everywhere and stopped at a roundabout to give way to traffic. The lorry saw him and stopped behind him. Then there was a gap in the traffic - my brother knew it was a not a big enough gap for a cyclist - the lorry driver unfortunately did not and tried to pull out onto the roundabout - driving over the top of my brother and his bike in the process. He spent about twenty minutes pinned under the lorry with the bike. I'm glad to say that after an operation and a few months in hospital and a more months of physio he was ok. He heard the lorry accelerate and tried to jump out the way - hence only the pedal had gone through his leg. but those seconds saved his life!

That's horrendous 2dancersmum, was the lorry driver prosecuted?

I think I have said before that the rules and the law need to be much tighter and rigorously enforced. We hear about various police initiatives to do with driving while using a mobile phone and so on, but so many people do it anyway and seem to take the view that you should just try not to get caught, rather than understanding why you shouldn't do it in the first place. Then we get people going to court and playing the victim, pleading to keep their licence or they will lose their job. And they get away with it, even though some are already well over the points limit and often for repeating the same offence. These people are only finally stopped when they actually kill somebody, and even then the punishment rarely comes near to fitting the crime, so they never learn.

Being a road user now seems to be all about dealing with aggression and ignorance, trying not to react as you never know how a situation will develop or what kind of nutter you might be dealing with. Some people will always be ignorant so whatever you do, keep up good all round observation but always try and avoid eye contact.

It was indeed a very lucky escape. Cuts, bruises and a serious but not life threatening knee/leg injury, from which he made a full recovery. The accident was in January when he was 18 years old and away from home on a work experience gap year - so nearly thirty years ago.  The driver was prosecuted . I don't think the sight of a boy of similar age to his son being pinned under a bike and his lorry, fully conscious was one he forgot in a hurry.

Lucky indeed.  I once got in a taxi with an ashen faced driver who said he'd earlier seen a cyclist squeezed through the railings at Hyde Park by a lorry turning left on him.

On a less grisly note, can we add to the Room 101 cyclists' account the crime of 'wearing all over lycra while not engaged in a competition' ?  I wish middle aged men would just go back to buying sports cars or having affairs for their mid-life crises rather than buying two grands' worth of carbon fibre racing bike and a complete Tour de France outfit in XXL then sitting in front of me jiggling their rear flab while doing 15mph down country lanes.

Ah, but Quintus, they may begin by wearing XXL, but if they continue with the exercise, they will become lean, fit and muscular.

Or at least, they think they will. :)

as far as I'm concerned that still won't improve the view!   I'm of the generation that still finds it possible to go for a long bike ride in tee shirt and shorts or indeed a tracksuit..

Ah mamil always a joy to behold! Particularly pleasing if you are stuck behind them or they are using your drive or garden as their own space to recover from the hills of East Anglia or repair the bike.

Lycra clad cycling was a real trend with my workmates who mostly shouldn't be squeezing into the material. There is a slow shift towards kayaking amount the crew.

I've got a problem with 3 newspaper websites - The Standard, The Independent and The Scotsman.  When I click on the link, I am being redirected to a site called "finding result.com".

A search of the internet indicated that it may be a piece of malware that is causing this issue.  I followed the advice and got nowhere so I contacted Apple Support.  Two hours later we were none-the-wiser.  The gentleman from Apple suggested trying the site on my old Windows laptop - the same thing happened so perhaps the malware was coming through my ISP.  I tried using the 4G connection on my phone and the same thing happened.  Phone and ISP are different companies so not either of them.

When the gentleman - or should I say the three gentlemen who were trying to help me - tried the websites they did not have the same issue.  Is it only me?  And how come three devices using two networks get the same result.

Unless I can resolve, I am afraid I won't be accessing those three newspapers during my links stint.

Basically this is a rant about malware!!!

Rant over!

Please can I add queue jumpers to Room 101.  I struggle with the fact that whilst I have patiently queued up and waited my turn, there are people who just push in and have no concern for the people behind them.

It's so rude - or is this me being quintessentially British??

No, I'm Irish and I agree wholeheartedly.

I hate queue jumpers too but I like it when they don't get away with it. People who have been queue jumped very often just stand there and mutter about it. I say oi, get in line!

Me too, Jacqueline.

My lastest spat was in a hospital recently.  I arrived for my appointment, and was waiting in line with everyone else to give my details to the receptionist when a woman came in and walked straight to the front of the queue.  Her reason for this was that she had "missed the appointment last week."  I replied that in that case, as she was so late, waiting another few minutes would not make much difference.  She did go to the back, but only after I and another woman left our places and "escorted" her to the back of the queue.  Everyone else standing there just shuffled and looked embarrassed.

Why is it that people generally don't stand up to this sort of behaviour?

Possibly to avoid a mouthful of abuse.  Rude and selfish people seem to have a talent for making the polite and considerate members of society who dare to object feel even more hard done by than they did at the original offence.  I speak from experience.

Tend to,agree Anne Marriott

If they were reasonable they wouldn't have the gall to do in first place! So,because you expect this it's sometimes not worth bothering ( apart from some very British type tutting) to say anything but I do admire those who do.

It's the same sort of thing as people who smoke on trains etc ....they know that you know that it's not correct so it's just a wind up on their part so better to just move seat......that is when there is one of course!!

I used to be one of the mutterers but there is so much rudeness now, as I get older I just won't put up with it. I also find that sometimes if one puts a queue jumper right, other people will feel brave enough to back you up, as with Fonty above. That is a big sometimes though. If I am met with verbal abuse, I just let them burn themselves out.

Some people like to test reactions to their obnoxious behaviour, but they know most people will just tolerate or back down to keep the peace and sometimes that is obviously the best course of action.

It is the same with traffic queue jumpers. There you are, minding your business and waiting patiently in a line of traffic, plenty of warnings about lanes closed ahead, cones in place etc. When somebody with entitlement issues decides they don't have to wait, drives past the queue and tries to force their way in at or nearer the front. If it's me already at or near the front, they've no chance. I just look straight ahead ignoring their waving and gesturing. Play them at their own game. There is always someone who will let them in though, so they keep doing it and never learn any manners.

I'm reminded of an incident at Farningham Road station (a station I use when visiting friends) a couple of years ago when a lady objected to smokers.  Does make you think twice.

:0 ( ...i wrote a long post last night and it's vanished!

I want to put poorly maintained roads in room 101, and also the speeding drivers in huge cars that drive down the middle of said poorly maintained roads causing me to hit a pot hole and rip the inner wall of my car tyre.

I'd then also like to add cars that don't have spare tyres, just gunge, come with silly plastic tools and then wheel nuts put on so tight that they can't be undone!

Can you guess what I spent 3 hours doing yesterday?!

Hello Pixiewoo, I feel your pain.  Hope you got sorted in the end, although no doubt an expensive experience (I had to replace a flat a couple of weeks ago).

As you will have seen there were problems yesterday and most of the posts made yesterday are not currently available:

Foodstuff manufacturers who glue up the flaps of cartons so much that you can't get them undone!  Seriously, have you tried opening cereal packets and the like recently?  It's difficult to find enough space to get a finger under the flap.
