  1. DD was taught by Martin Howland for several years at Renaissance Arts Scholars. He is a phenomenal teacher and I would highly recommend him and this project.
  2. Bless her, hugs to her and you. Tell her she needs to 'act' confident - push herself to the front of the class, volunteer to demonstrate something, answer questions etc. Maybe pretend to be a dancer she likes/admires? It is REALLY HARD to do if you are naturally shy/retiring. But if she can put an 'act' on, and just go for it, after a while, the act won't be so much of an act. I'm not a dancer, but am someone who would prefer to hide in the shadows, however, to do my job I have to put a smile on, and go out and be 'all singing all dancing'. It does become easier over time.
  3. If it has any bearing on your thoughts, LSC charge an additional, not inconsiderate, sum of money on top of the degree grant to undertake the degree course with them. This is on top of any extra costs for resources etc. Rambert, to my memory, only charge the £9000 ( or whatever it is ) degree grant that all students are eligible for. However, my understanding is that all diploma courses are self funded.
  4. I think DD filled out the form herself, and the GP just checked it through, and signed to agree. However, DD did it all herself and i wasn't involved. This was for 18+ training.
  5. Thinking of you Michelle, and Adrian, and wishing you all the best. Your immense determination to achieve always impresses me. XXX
  6. Bird College (Sidcup, South London) do 'short courses' - summer holiday courses that are 5 days (Tues to Sat) with a performance on the saturday. Lots of different styles of dance, with acting and singing too. Students can attend from age 11 and accommodation can be provided with host families. DD attended 2 different courses and had a great time. Once she stayed with a host family and another time we stayed in the premier inn (10 min walk away from Bird) and DH and I went into London whilst she was dancing.
  7. I was just going to suggest Planet Dance in Batley. Wonderful shop! Best to make an appointment to have pointe shoes fitted.
  8. I too was going to suggest Renaissance Arts in Leeds (seeing as you mentioned Phoenix) Either for their scholars scheme on alternate Sunday afternoons or their diploma course. Good luck xx
  9. My DD did as well. I think I have seen on social media that they now have a ballet associates type class for younger children, but I don't know anything about it. (except it will be fabulous!)
  10. My DD attended Renaissance Arts Scholars on alternate Sunday afternoons in Leeds, as well as dancing with her home dance school. She then went to do a musical theatre degree at 18.
  11. There is also Bird College in Sidcup, Performers College in Essex and Birmingham and Renaissance Arts in Leeds. (Ballet here is amazing!) All offering Diplomas at 16. My understanding is that these are self funded.
  12. My DD also ruled out several places having attended Summer/Easter intensives at them. Others moved up the list. (Likewise, the way they were organised/ ability as the parent to actually talk to someone/ staff responding in a timely manner also factored in decisions)
  13. Bird College also offer a diploma course at 16 and degree course at 18.
  14. Oooo, these sound interesting. Would anyone be able to recommend a particular make/ model? Happy for DM if preffered. Thank you x
  15. I would talk to your teacher and see what they recommend. It may also depend upon which categories/sections are offered at the competitions you attend. In the competitions my DD attended, you could do any dance alongside your song in song&dance, as long as they fitted together well... so jazz, lyrical, tap etc. Jazz, lyrical and contemporary could all be danced in the modern section, although there is usually a seperate lyrical section as well. (And you can usually only dance once in each section so you don't want dances that overlap) Good luck. Remember, it is better to have a few dances that you have time to practice and work hard on, than so many that they are all a bit rushed. My DD (at 18) ended up with a lot of dances, including duets, but some of them she had had for at least 4 or 5 years by then! So just slowly building and adding to the repertoire.
  16. I quite agree ... my DD is doing a musical theatre degree!
  17. I highly recommend Renaissance Arts Scholars based in Leeds. They generally dance at the Northern Ballet Studios or Yorkshire Dance ( round the corner from NB ). Every other Sunday, with a ballet class, technical Jazz class, and optional vocal and pointe classes. They audition in the summer term for a September start. We travelled from near York, and it was about a 75/80 minute drive. My DD attended for 6 years and thoroughly enjoyed the classes. RA was a very strong possibility for her 18+ training, but in the end she decided to head for London.
  18. My DD did GCSEs at local high school, and A levels at local 6th form college, combined with a lot of dancing at our local dance school, an associates scheme at a nearby (ish) performing arts conservatoire (for 6 yrs), plus additional singing and drama lessons. We were lucky that we had such great teachers close by. She has just started her musical theatre degree course at Bird College.
  19. We all use the Sho Reusable flasks and bottles here too!
  20. Do they have a kettle at the studios? Could she take instant noodles/cup a soup/ instant pasta things? Non dancing DS, but at Uni, used to make these up in a hot flask in the morning for his lunch. DD has also started a dance degree, but usually makes a packed lunch the night before to take with her/goes home for lunch. I have no idea what she does for breakfast! She has never really been a breakfast person, and also times things to the last minute, not often thinking about eating! I would second taking something to eat on the bus for your DD. xx
  21. When DD was looking at Uni courses, none of her vocational exam (dance/ drama/ music) UCAS points counted for anything! ( and she has several hundreds! )
  22. I agree, please stay. You have always been so supportive and helpful, and a voice of sensibility! It's lovely to hear how well your DD is doing, and would be lovely to continue to do so.
  23. Many moons ago, as an adult, I did a tap exam ... the examiner beamed as we walked in, said we were amazing for even doing an exam, tapped away under the table with us, and made it as much fun as it could be. We all enjoyed it, so did the next exam the following year. We didn't get the same examiner... but one who looked bored stiff, totally uninterested and just barked at us. None of us did very well in that exam, and lost any interest in doing another one!
  24. DD tends to wear Silky 60 denier convertibles. They are a reasonable price and seem to hold colour for a fair while (as long as she doesn't wear black tights over the top 🙄!) We've found that if you go up a size from what you think you would wear they fit better and are less likely to snag and develop holes.
