  1. Saw Thursday night's Spartacus which was good but nothing compared to when I saw Carlos Acosta and Ivan Vasiliev dance the title role with The Bolshoi. Rodkin did all the moves fine but I didn't get much emotion. I liked Belyakov and Stepanova as Crassus/Aegina and Sevenard did a good enough job as Phrygia. (Apparently she and Rodkin are partners in real life too.) The one handed lifts were pretty amazing although this version pales into insignificance if one remembers the sheer spectacle of The Mikhailovsky Spartacus - I'll never forget the contortions performed by Denis and Anastasia Matvienko. Overall this performance was good but it was lacking the usual buzz and atmosphere of anticipation/excitement I usually associate with The Bolshoi. Some curtain call photos from Thursday night's show:- Denis Rodkin - Spartacus Yulia Stepanova (Aegina) and Artemy Belyakov (Crassus) Eleonora Sevenard (Phrygia) and Denis Rodkin
  2. Saw Fridays opening Swan Lake. Where has the Bolshoi I know and love gone? Very lacklustre performance, especially as I had expected Chudin and Smirnova to really knock it out of the park! Smirnova didn't even manage a full set of fouettes and the Jester barely raised any oohs and ahs as in the past. No one stood out except perhaps Anna Tikhomirova as one of the Princesses. No buzz, no atmosphere of excitement. The orchestra got the biggest cheers at the end. Really disappointing especially after Spartacus which was good but in no way sparkling the night before. Never seen The Bolshoi so subdued before.
  3. Have to say I'm not that bowled over by the Onegin casting. Muntagirov is a Lensky not an Onegin he's too boyish for Onegin in my opinion. Not brooding enough. No Morera, Lamb or Campbell? Glad to see Soares is dancing the only matinee and I do like him as Onegin. IF I can get a ticket....
  4. Thanks for the update - I hope that Anna Tikhomirova will appear in one of the DonQs on 16 & 17m as I really hoped to see her.
  5. Thank you very much for the heads up - have to say this years gala was a flop compared to Ivan Putrovs excellent gala the following week. I wonder if her will be returning as well? I shall think very carefully about this one as it does clash with a rather good back to back in Vienna of Onegin and Jewels!
  6. A UK friend of mine saw the Friday Jane Eyre show - Copeland/Stearns I think - and he said he thought it was fabulous.
  7. Loved the triple bill yesterday (Friday matinee) I thought Magri was wonderful as the Firebird! So many great dancers at the moment though. Nothing to not like yesterday. Got some lovely shots of the curtain calls. 8. Love the photos especially RobS thank you for sharing. Looking forward to the Friday (very, no, ridiculously) early matinee. I know there are some cast changes but are we expecting Muntagirov in Symph in C? There's a man missing on the ROH website casting!
  9. Received an email from TFL today to advise:- anyone in London who might have used the cross river RV1 service to/from Covent Garden this is being withdrawn from service shortly. Also amends to the 59 this will terminate at Euston now not Kings Cross.
  10. Exactly! I was very surprised to see him still listed - Hallberg that is!
  11. Thank you for this Richard some nice casts I just wish Nunez/Muntagirov were doing a matinee in there that would be a treat.
  12. 13. We did have the "blue badge" scheme at one time but that has fallen somewhat by the wayside - I'm as guilty as most for not wearing my badge. I tend to arrange with friends beforehand if I know they are going and then we catch up in one or both intervals. We most certainly do not spend our time on the mobile phones though👍😊
  14. Wow Vadimir Malakhov is looking very sharp these days! Congrats to the winners.
  15. Oh tell me about it I had a nightmare getting a ticket for that Friday 7/6 matinee because Virgin advance fares on a Friday are not cheap to start with! Only that I got an offer of 20% off I got a fare for £65. Royal Ballet are the only company in the UK I know of that have matinees at 12noon all other companies are 2 or 2.30pm. I am aware that matinee means morning. In Europe often there are Sunday matinees at 2pm 2.30pm or 4pm. It's crazy.
  16. Just had time to look at the ballet offerings and one thing stands out a mile to me and that is the lack of matinees. And of those a good proportion are weekdays(very dear to travel weekdays). Only ONE matinee for Onegin??? It's not looking good for me.
  17. Pleased to say I saw a lovely performance of John Neumeier's Illusions Like Swan Lake last Thursday in Hamburg. I really enjoyed this unusual take on the traditional story. It was very well danced by all not least Alina Cojacaru - although I did think at first she didn't have that much to do! However she came into her own in Act 3 and yes there were 32 fouettes as well! I am now really hoping to be able to go again next year to see this show. Thank you to all on here who said to go and see it! A few pics from the curtain call:- Ensemble Alina Cojacaru (Princess Natalia), Edvin Revazov (King Ludwig), Anna Laudere (Odette), Florian Pohl (The Man in the Shadow) Anna Laudere (Odette), Florian Pohl (The Man in the Shadow also played Rothbart), Patricia Friza (King/Queen Mother) Emilie Mazon (Princess Claire) and Jacopo Bellussi (Count Alexander)
  18. Thanks for this review Squadron - I will read your blog! I have always wanted to visit Singapore and knew they did a DonQ so it's great to have a first hand account.
  19. She was and I think Thiago was her Franz (before he was a Principal) I have just checked my spreadsheet and it must have been before 2007 as its not on my spreadsheet for performances I have seen which I started in 2007. Wow I really thought it was 2007 or 2009.
  20. Sigh why didn't ROH list the opera and ballet separately on the press release and finish with a calendar of all performances on the back pages. Great to see Onegin back and the new Swan Lake which I've yet to see live. Coppelia, Manon and SB I will probably pass if those prices are correct. Typically they've got a good triple in June with, I am presuming, very few performances again just like this year's triple so another bun fight for tickets. Doncaster tour - not the most obvious place, but it's up north so that's good. No Balanchine. Virtually no Main Stage Ashton. Very disappointing. That's me off to Europe for Balanchine✈️
