  1. The thing I don't like about contemporary dance technique (such as Shechter) is that it seems to be earthbound, dancers walk and grovel on the ground but rarely DANCE, there is a difference. I would consider all of Wayne McGregor's works as modern ballet, which I love.
  2. The Times review gives 2 stars, which is a bit unfair on the triple bill and I think apples mostly to the Shechter, but the general opinion is that it isn't one of his best anyway, it was so hard to see the choreography because of the very low lighting and dark costumes, perhaps they will turn it up today.
  3. Already have 2 tickets, going to book at least 1 more now, nice they announce it just before public booking opens, but I'll still have to join the fray on Tuesday to see if I can get a School Linbury ticket
  4. Music didn't seem loud from mid amphi, quite enjoyed it actually, the only thing I did enjoy, lighting effects were good though it was too dark to see the dancers themselves, not enough real choreography for me, just walking and moving about in groups. Four Temperaments was well danced although it seemed a bit slow and careful at first, Akane Takada was great in what I presume would have been Natalia Osipova's role, and I loved the way Zenada Yanovsky seemed to just swat her partners out of the way in the final part, Edward Watson and Steven McRae looked good at Balanchine too. Didn't stay for Song of the Earth, glad I handed in Monday's ticket beforehand, still have 3 more chances to see Song of the Earth, timings for that triple bill seem to be 10m, 25m and 65m, musn't go early then!
  5. The Times said it would be 25 minutes long, and the music is for string and percussion (lots) with a Middle Eastern feel, just thinking it would be good if the ROH would put the running times up, I had an Email and everything was TBA or TBC. The Balanchine is worth the price of the ticket for me
  6. At home I like to be surrounded by comfort and familiarity, but with ballet I like to be challenged, the more styles I see the better, one of the things that fascinates me with ballet is that you can take even a short classical solo, and every dancer makes it look different!
  7. So the game is still afoot for the 2nd and 9th does anyone else thing how odd it is that today's ballerina Evgenia Obraztsova has to be rushed back to Moscow because they don't have anyone to cover Lady of the Camellias, the RB doesn't have anyone else for Swan Lake and has to rush in a ballerina from Berlin. I agree that Vadim Muntagirov has luckily proved to be very good at partnering different girls at short notice, so has Matthew Golding, on that score alone they deserve lots of praise.
  8. There is a short rehearsal video of Iana Salenko and Steven McRae rehearsing Swan Lake on the ROH website, it says Iana will also dance with Vadim Muntagirov later this run.
  9. This was the best presented ballet I have seen so far at the cinema, interesting interviews and backstage warm-ups, thought Darcey Bussell did very well talking to the little girls, Anthony Dowell, and Cynthia Harvey and Jonathan Cope, now know that Anthony Dowell was going with the usual medieval period designs but Yolanda Sonnabend kept insisting it was set in Tchaikovsky's time, so he agreed! The one thing that I don't think anyone else has commented on was the bad quality of the picture, I know this is a well lit production and have seen it 3 times this season, but it came over as dull and sepia tinted, it was very difficult to see some of the dancing, I suppose it will always depend on the cinema's equipment, but disappointing.
  10. They used to visit Brighton Dome at Christmas and were very popular, their style is similar to the Mariinsky, many of the dancers were trained at the Vaganova School. I have seen Swan Lake which is very traditional and I believe has the Ivanov 4th act, Brighton was promised La Bayadere but never got it as they said the stage was too small, probably true, I imagine the production will also be traditional and based on the Mariinsky's, sure to have their own orchestra, especially at the Coliseum. Definitely one of the better touring Russian companies, at least they were a few years ago.
  11. Regarding SPBT, I knew Vadim Muntagirov was dancing Swan Lake, but really pleased to hear Denis Rodkin will dance in La Bayadere. The first night of Swan Lake is being filmed. I expect now that I have booked the Upper Circle they will open up the Balcony!
  12. A shortened cast list is available on the ROH website for tomorrow in various languages, the pas de trois is danced by Francesca Hayward, Yuhui Choe and Alexander Campbell.
  13. If Alina Cojocaru and Alejandro Virelles danced In the Middle twice yesterday plus Spring and Fall I'm not surprised that I thought they looked a little tired in the evening, they were superb in the final pdd though, I love this ballet, my favourite of the three. I don't find Petite Mort tedious at all, but I do find Spring and Fall so after a second viewing even more, too much running, the pdd is lovely though and I liked Tamara Rojo and Max Westwell as much as the other cast, I much prefer The Leaves Are Fading! The only thing I don't like about Petite Mort is how short it is. All the supporting dancers in the first cast of In the Middle were wonderful, especially Junor Souza and Laurretta Summerscales.
  14. Things went better on Wednesday as I decided to get the 6 bus into Brighton and see where it eventually stopped, and it is the only bus that now stops right in front of the station amidst the roadworks, all the others stop down Queens Road as you said. The new ticket office system is a complete shambles too, you need to choose one of 4 type tickets from a machine in order to buy a ticket and have to watch a screen or listen to announcements until your number is called, took me 30 minutes recently.
  15. For a while I thought Ksenia Ovsyanick WAS dancing in the Forsythe, she and Tiffany Hedman look similar (from the upper theatre) and both bear a resemblance to Sylvie Guillem, the thing that surprised me was that the girls don't have to be tall and spiky, I thought Fernanda Oliveira and Crystal Costa who have different physiques looked great, also of course Erina Takahashi. Two more dancers who also stood out were Barry Drummond and Makoto Nakamura.
  16. Great performance last night, finish time was 9.45pm, couldn't stay for the talk but would be interested to know what was said. The weakest ballet for me was Spring and Fall, although Alina Cojocaru and Alejandro Virelles were beautiful, I think ENB have a very fine dancer there, he was much more relaxed than in Nutcracker, can't wait to see this couple dance In the Middle, also to see Tamara Rojo and Max Westwell on Saturday in the Neumeier, they looked great together in Petit Mort. In the Middle was fantastic, that and Petit Mort are real modern classics, haven't read all the reviews yet but the Times and Standard are very positive! People who like to get the 19/38 and 341 buses outside the theatre might have a problem on Saturday and Sunday, as far as I can make out the buses will run okay northwards but are being diverted southwards from the Angel due to resurfacing on Rosebery Avenue.
  17. I had fun at Brighton Station last night after seeing the Coliseum Gala, I had about 12 minutes and everything was okay until I realised there were roadworks where the bus-stop should be, nobody else was about and after looking at the taxi queue (my fare is £15 and I do everything I can to avoid it) I started to dash down to Churchill Square where the bus stops, I began to panic when I saw the bus coming up the hill to turn round but just made it to Churchill Square in time for a free ride home!
  18. I really enjoyed this Gala, it gave me a chance to see dancers never seen before onstage, Ekaterina Osmolkina, Maia Makhateli, and Olesya Novikova, plus "old" favourites such as Johan Kobborg, Igor Zelensky and Kenneth Greve, in a very mixed programme, the only negative pieces for me were Ballet 101 for Xander Parish and Ekaterina Krysanova's Cirque solo but that was only to give her something to dance instead of Marco Spada as Dimitri Gudanov was injured, and I can always do without MacMillan's R and J, would rather have seen a different Russian version. Thrilled to get another chance to see Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg in Mayerling plus Alexander Campbell as Bratfisch, that had to be the highlight for me, which was followed by another very moving pdd from Connectome with Edward Watson and Natalia Osipova which stood up very well out of context, Benjamin Millepied's Amoveo was good too, and I was interested to see Wheeldon's Cinderella pdd live on stage instead of on TV, it looked ten times better!
  19. I only booked 4 tickets and after a dodgy start when someone else beat me to a seat by a split second, things were okay, now await the casting for Woolf Works to find out who I've actually booked to see, and of course to swap or book fror more!
  20. Apart from seeing Anna T with Matthew Golding recently at the ROH I only know these dancers from DVD's but find them an excellent Company, there is a review of Jewels in the March issue of Dance Europe. Agree that Remi Wortmeyer looks like Steven McRae, he dances with Maia Makhatelli on the recent Nureyev Friends Gala DVD too in a pas de deux by Hans Van Manen, great to see them in a modern piece.
  21. Amazon have it due for release on DVD and Blu-Ray soon, I would be grateful if anyone does see it at the cinema for any thoughts, don't think I have ever seen it.
  22. I think it will be Sarah Lamb, she missed her own Swan Lakes, and danced very well with Vadim in Manon, both being very elegant, Akane Takada is dancing around the same time so probably won't be her.
  23. I'm suddenly getting Emails from ENB (I did book for SW yesterday) and it says that at the end of Newsnight tonight on BBC2 10.30-11.05pm there will be an extract from In the Middle with Erina Takahashi and James Streeter.
  24. Today is Antoinette Sibley's 76th birthday.
