  1. Agree last night slightly spoilt by the lighting again, I've never seen such a dark murky Fille, can't be the fault of the ROH as they would have had the same lighting as usual (in the past there was extra lighting for DVD recordings with cheaper prices!) so must be the camera's, the live relay process, or the cinema equipment to blame. Perhaps because of this I didn't enjoy this performance as much as the Morera or Marquez casts I saw at the theatre, but did really like the offstage interviews, especially Lesley Collier (have been watching her brilliant Lise on DVD), and the chance to see Peregrine twice!
  2. I wanted to see BRB's The King Dances, and in a great triple bill too, shame it's only on for 2 nights, nice to know about it before booking the ROH autumn stuff.
  3. Well, I liked Connectome and a reworked Raven Girl (or just with proper lighting) sounds incredibly good value for money, my usual ticket only costs £12 for this programme against £35 for Nutcracker and R and J.
  4. I've been reading the programme and the history of Fille is very complex, the original 1789 version was an arrangement of popular tunes of the day, then Herold wrote his score for the Paris Opera which kept some of the old music, then a new version with music by Hertel was produced in Germany, which was also used in Russia with Petipa and Ivanov mentioned as choreographers, followed by Gorsky.
  5. I enjoyed the first night so much that I went again last night, even with very high expectations it was just as heart-warming, think Morera and Muntagirov really seem to bring out the best in each other, and dance so beautifully, I've never enjoyed Fille more, it hasn't been a particular favourite of mine until now! Great cast all round, even Peregrine was extra frisky, doing several hoof movements, and then deciding to leave the stage early, nearly pulling his keeper over. Looking forward to seeing Osipova and McRae next week, having read my 2010 programme it appears some of the choreography for Lise and Colas was Bolshoi inspired, so perhaps "bigging it up" (love that expression) isn't out of order.
  6. The DVD and Blu-Ray of the cinema relay are available for pre-order on the ROH shop website for 1st June, must be the quickest ever release!
  7. I suspect the first night cast is THE cast for outstanding performances in all the leads, last night my favourite dancer was Alexander Campbell, who did some marvellous controlled turns during the ballet, there are quite a lot, not many (if any) double tours. Roberta Marquez was more feisty as Lise (although I preferred Morera's softer approach) didn't think Thomas Whitehead and Luca Acri were really settled in their roles yet, troubles with the umbrella but not with the ribbons or partnering, great to see Roberta Marquez dance again!
  8. I was only watching bits of this programme but recorded it, liked it far more than I thought I would, some very talented dancers plus good choreography, although I'm inexperienced in contemporary one dancer in particular fascinated me, and he won, so I'll definitely watch the Final, and the Ballet evening, not sure about the others. Well presented with interesting interviews and comments.
  9. "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", quite a few people going by the ticket sales, though I suppose it's more Wayne MacGregor, I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't appear to be a biographical ballet, have yet to read a 900 page book I bought and now I don't think it will help anyway, but that does explain why there are so many dancers in the cast, 3 separate ballets, although surely Alessandra Ferri will portray Virginia Woolf in each part?
  10. Lovely night, I have never seen Laura Morera look so soft and gentle (always thought of her as a stronger dramatic dancer) and Vadim Muntagirov danced Colas in the same manner, no hint of showing off, just a charming young man, they made a wonderful partnership, at the end I felt very emotional! Beautifully controlled balances by Laura Morera, 2 full turns very slowly, no worries. Paul Kay and Will Tuckett seem to live the roles of Alain and Simone, Paul Kay gets exactly the right balance. And of course the pony danced perfectly, it really was pas de cheval wasn't it
  11. I've always thought that The Nutcracker was choreographed by Ivanov, although possibly only the waltz of the snowflakes, waltz of the flowers and grand pas de deux remain his, I think Peter Wright's production keeps more Ivanov than any other.
  12. I thought there was something unusual about this Season but I couldn't think what it was until now, is this the first ever with no Petipa ballet (apart from parts of Giselle)?
  13. Was just going to post this, it's on the Coliseum website now, Alastair Marriott's Zeitgeist for Natalia Osipova and Edward Watson which is new, Marcelo Gomes' Tristesse for 4 men, and Pita's Facada, seen last year in Solo for Two, for Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev! 17th and 18th July 7.30pm.
  14. Love the sound of the 3 Wheeldon ballets, especially Within the Golden Hour, think that was my favourite Wheeldon so far, and quite pleased to see Connectome/Raven Girl back too, also Two Pigeons, glad that the new Acosta Carmen is not a full length ballet, the big surprise is Frankenstein which I presume will be on the main stage, Wayne Eagling's wasn't bad, but Liam Scarlett's could be really scary!
  15. First nights are the safest to book for without knowing the casting, the Company want good reviews, at the moment I would think Alina Cojocaru and Alejandro Virelles would dance both Nutcracker and Corsaire first nights, this is only my guess of course, after that it's impossible to tell, wouldn't particularly book for closing nights though.
  16. I'm so happy for Hikaru Kobayashi, I was missing her, so glad it was for a good reason
  17. Francesca Hayward is the most gifted but I think it's too soon for Principal, I have doubts about most of the other soloists with regard to either technique or expressive qualities, the dancer I would promote would be Alexander Campbell.
  18. I remember seeing Freddie Mercury at the ROH, it was only recently that I learnt he was a friend of Wayne Eagling and I used to be a fan too so I suppose we went to a lot of the same shows. He was always very well dressed and behaved and used to sit with friends in a Balcony Box on the left side, nothing like Freddie Mercury the outrageous pop star
  19. I appreciated Kevin O'Hare apologising to the audience last night, he is always willing to come out and take any flak, there must have been some people who didn't know the restaurants were shut, it gave me a chance to look at the Crush Room in peace. Thought it was an uneven performance, Vadim was just in a different class, he and Akane Takada make a beautiful couple as far as their dancing goes, but with all this swapping around I suppose there's no rehearsal time for the finer details, the story of Swan Lake got a bit lost. Liked the PDT, Fernando Montano danced with attack and partnered well, and Yasmine Naghdi and Tristan Dyer cheered me up in the stool part of the waltz and the Neapolitan dance. Quite a sad night as I like the last act in particular but good to know there will be another DVD of this version.
  20. Me too, watched it two nights, even better the second, lovely to see the Coliseum and not the ROH for a change, seems better quality picture and sound than usual for an Opus Arte disc.
  21. Today's performances at the ROH to go ahead, but the only catering available front of house will be water. Lots of bus diversions in the area too, not just in the Kingsway area but Westminster Bridge area too, Somerset House is closed down, think I'll stick to the National Gallery this afternoon!
  22. I was wondering how Muntagirov looked, the chance to see a second cast with him, Golding and Kaneko in particular is the reason I'm holding onto my ticket.
  23. Actually I'd be interested in knowing what an evening performance is like, quite cool I imagine even in midsummer, I always go to the 2pm start as I'm usually going on to the ballet, and because I can imagine the original Globe more in the afternoon.
