  1. Don't do it!!! ... Only joking! As Pictures says, go regularly and keep it fun. Also, don't push it, they have to want to do it and if your teacher doesn't work out for whatever reason, find another one. Good luck.
  2. Julie, she's 18 now ... how time flies, NYB seems like only yesterday!
  3. My dd is absolutely loving it too, pretty much as you describe Harwel!
  4. The key message I have kept hearing over the last few years is versatility, versatility, versatility! There are of course no guarantees and what I have learnt over the years is that as a parent you have to manage your own expectations, manage your dc's expectations, grab every opportunity and hope for the best. On dd's dance journey we have experienced some incredible highs and some challenging times, but wouldn't change a thing. Of course I want nothing more than for her to succeed, but the dance journey is a fragile and unpredictable one for many reasons. In any event, she has had a unique school/life experience which has shaped her and will stay with her forever.
  5. My dd also got through 3-4 pairs per month in her first year of upper school. However, she now has a special order Gaynor Minden shoe and so far this year I have purchased 3 pairs. They are such a hard wearing long lasting shoe and I only expect to have to buy one, possibly two more pairs this year.
  6. The ballet tuition is very good at Abbots Bromley.
  7. Whilst it might be too late to apply for Hammond, there's nothing to be lost by contacting them to explain your situation, you never know, they may be willing to look at a DVD audition even at this point. Also, I have read and heard lots of good things about Young Dancers Academy in London. I don't personally have any experience of Hammond or YDA, but plenty of others on this forum will. There are also a number of other private schools that offer vocational dance programmes, Legat and Abbots Bromley School for Girls come immediately to mind, but there are others. I'm sure other forum members will be able to suggest other schools too. Good luck with Elmhurst ... Elmhurst study Chechetti in upper school.
  8. I can remember when dd auditioned for tring upper school, the invite to the funding final landed on the doormat on the Friday she broke up for feb half term.
  9. The whole peak district is wonderful .. Buxton, Ashbourne, Bakewell. Lovely market towns and lots of fabulous scenery, walks etc.
  10. Yes it certainly does happen and we've also seen it happen several times from WL summer school too.
  11. When my dd made WL finals for Y9 a few years ago, she was one of only 4 ... and they didn't take any of them.
  12. amos73, I remember this being a problem a couple of years ago with upper school finals. Dada offers from Tring had to be either accepted or declined before some other results/offers were out ... unless of course you paid a £650 deposit to Tring to hold the place! They put a very short acceptance timeline on the upper school offers from memory.
  13. I ordered dd's Grishko tutu from BalletPro last year and from memory you can order a standard stock item from them, which if it doesn't fit, you can return. I think they also do a bespoke service with measurements that they then order and takes about 6-8 weeks to come from Russia. With the latter option they send a chart indicating the measurements they require. We did dd's measurement and concluded that a small would be fine, which it was and fits perfectly. I personally was a little wary of sending measurements to Russia and then receiving something that may not be quite right, which I would then be stuck with. BalletPro were very good and as I ordered a size they had in stock, I had the tutu in a matter of days. It arrived well protected and boxed up. Did also invest in the Grishko tutu bag which is great.
  14. Elmhurst girls did very well i gather. Elmhurst study Checcetti in 6:2.
  15. Dd also commented last year that the UK audition was a very large group, though I'm not sure that really matters as the audition panel must be so tuned in to what they are looking for. Dd came away from the audition wondering how much she had been seen, but was invited to final.
  16. Good luck with your search for a suitable policy. The only thing I would say is that I would not even entertain any kind of policy which did not include physio, consultant fees, MRIs and surgery, especially for an upper school vocational ballet student. You only need one significant event and you may well find you need all of these things and that your annual benefits under a policy can be gobbled up in the blink of an eye. The reason I say especially in upper school, is that in my opinion 6.1 is a high risk year for injury given the ramp up in intensity of training. As OPs have mentioned with regard to Bupa, we had our dd covered on a work scheme and it made no difference to them on the premium/benefit levels that dd was in full time ballet training. Private medical fees are shocking.
  17. You have a Balletcoforum tab permanently open on your iPad ... In fact it's been open on mine for about the last 4 years!
  18. With regard to Abbots Bromley, I'm sure I saw a road sign today advertising a sixth form open evening on 14th October.
  19. Apply early for Tring ... I don't think they publish a closing date for applications and last year we just got in on the last upper school audition. From memory we applied just after October half term and it was nearly too late!
  20. Ha ha ... Just realised! That's the flippin autocorrect on my iPad, it did the same thing on my earlier post, but I spotted it before I posted!
  21. They certainly did used to take from RBS JA some years ago, as my dad was selected when she had just started her second year as a JA in Y5. Congrats to anyone who is selected, what a fantastic opportunity. x
  22. Dd was invited to do Nutcracker some years ago when she was a JA and I remember her being gutted that we had to turn it down because we would have had to miss one or two rehearsals due to holiday. It was either all or nothing in terms of commitment to rehearsals.
