  1. When dd flew with her pancake tutu, she too folded it in on itself and packed it in a waterproof bag in her main suitcase, well buried amongst her clothes, though it didn't have a hoop. It travelled fine and sprung back into shape as soon as it was unpacked. She also took a plain white pillowcase so that she could lightly press it at the other end if needed, but it was fine. I insisted it went in a sturdy waterproof bag as I have experienced liquid leaks into my suitcases before when travelling on holiday, which have soaked through the case and ruined stuff!
  2. Balletbean, please please encourage your dd not to get too hung up on grades. It is my belief that upper schools are still looking for potential at 16, albeit a certain level of ability/technique is obviously required. If a school sees what they are looking for in your dd at audition, I think grade will be irrelevant and in any case, not all students will be on the same grade at time of auditioning for upper schools for a whole host of reasons. These schools absolutely know what they are looking for and I'm sure it comes down to so much more than grades. I speak as someone who knows nothing about ballet, but as a parent of a dd who has been through lower & upper school. Good luck with it all.
  3. Well done to everyone, but particular congratulations to the three UK finalists from Elmhurst. More great news for the school!
  4. Totally agree Peanut, our experience of seeing health professionals who treat dancers is that they want to do everything they can to solve the problem and get you dancing again!
  5. I know of several dc's who have been offered places at Rambert at 16 in the past, both vocational and non vocational.
  6. You could try Dancing Boutique, they provide uniform for lots of dance schools and they supply Flamenco skirts and shoes for Elmhurst students. Not sure if it's exactly a flamenco style skirt you are looking for, but I seem to recall that Dancing Boutique make them to measure. I imagine they may also be able to advise on shoes that are suitable for flamenco and won't damage dancefloors. I'm afraid I can't recall what these items cost. You could also post in the 'Wanted' section in Doing Dance as someone may have these items for sale second hand.
  7. I remember also being advised to place a cotton pillowcase on top of the netting before ironing.
  8. It's around 3.30/4pm depending on how long the demo performance is.
  9. Kat09, last year it was 5pm arrival on the Sunday.
  10. My dd has always been covered by Bupa and it has been invaluable. It's not that physio sessions or other treatments are limited to a certain number, but there are £ limits on the various categories of treatments and there is usually an upfront excess.
  11. Ashbourne Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic.
  12. Boots have gel toe spacers. I think you can either get Scholl ones or Boots own brand.
  13. Harwel, such a shame that your ds won't do a video for YBSS, it is a fantastic summer school. The teachers are wonderful and the environment is incredibly supportive and inclusive. I was so emotional last year, that after 7 years dd won't be going any more

    Tutus

If you don't mind a bit of a trip, Just Ballet in Wisbech have some beautiful tutus. My dd had a bespoke one made by them last year and it is gorgeous. They also have stock tutus and I believe they also hire them out.
  15. I am assured by my dd that the food is excellent. Last year a typical day consisted of a ballet class, then either pdd or solos and contemporary at the end of the day. The accommodation is pretty good too. In the evenings there were quiz nights and swimming. Generally just a really nice atmosphere, common rooms to hang out in. Also in the evening tea, hot chocolate and biscuits always available. Lots of lovely people, dd had a great time, she just wished it had been longer.
  16. It was also an issue 3 years ago. Tring was the first upper school final then.
  17. Just Ballet in Wisbech may have something. They have a website.
  18. Something else which may be worth looking into and considering is Metatone Tonic. Not a multi vitamin, but more of a boost after illness. I used this often when I was much younger and used to get quite run down after picking up most of the illnesses my dds picked up at nursery/school etc.
  19. Can also highly recommend Malvern Ballet Seminars as an excellent Easter course. Also have personal experience of RBS, Elmhurst, YBSS and Opes and would highly recommend all of these. Whilst RBS, YBSS and Elmhurst are selective, I think Opes is first come, first served. YBSS also hold scholarship auditions and I think it is also possible to apply for a bursary.
  20. Annette Nicholson is excellent, she used to be my dd's RBS MA teacher.
  21. I think Gaynors are definitely an acquired taste and certainly not a beginners shoe. My dd has a few pairs of Gaynors which she really likes and they have lasted for ages. She wears them for a number of classes, but they do get quite dirty as they last so long. However, she also wears Freeds, which she generally keeps for performances, auditions etc, as they just look so pretty on her feet and she loves to dance in them. By using Gaynors for some classes, it saves me having to buy quite so many pairs of Freeds!
  22. The Freed shop in Covent Garden stock Jet Glue.
  23. Does anyone know where I can buy jet glue in the UK please?
