  1. Would echo the recommendation about Yorkshire Ballet Summer School in York. Excellent summer school, high standard, popular with vocational students, but also good mix of non-voc students too.
  2. Sarahw, for some reason dd doesn't want to part with them, we have every pair since she started on pointe age 11! Better check for sawdust, don't want a weavel infestation (whatever a weavel is!).
  3. Blimey, perhaps I should consider selling dd's old ones ... I've got over 60 pairs boxed up!
  4. Weird! I remember when dd had some footwork vids on YouTube a few years ago, some of the viewers comments had absolutely nothing to do with any technical aspects of ballet whatsoever! And as for old pointe shoes ... Uuurrrggghhhh, they're simply horrible.
  5. Also, I wonder now that the dada threshold has risen for the forthcoming academic year, some of those still on mds into upper school may now become eligible for dada funding?
  6. Willow04, Elmhurst finals is a great achievement, congratulations to your dd. At Elmhurst I would say you also have the opportunity to keep all options open. Whilst classical ballet is the core focus they also do tap and jazz. There is also the option for music/singing lessons and from year 10 they take on contemporary and flamenco. There are also RAD lessons on Saturdays. Oh, and drama. Best of luck with the auditions and deliberations.
  7. The only comment my dd made about the Central audition last year was that there were lots of candidates in the audition and that it was pretty crowded in there, more than any of the other auditions. Maybe that's why they can't offer a tour, as there are so many candidates at each audition. However, if invited to final at Central they do also invite you along to experience a day at Central, which I think was the day before final. Can't absolutely remember as we withdrew from the final. Tring also had an experience day last year for candidates who had been offered a place after the dada funding final.
  8. Just wondered if anyone can suggest any insurance brokers or companies with regard to cover for dd participating in a European ballet summer school. I have tried to search previous threads, but I could only find one suggested broker, P J Hayman, so any other suggestions would be helpful. Dd will be travelling from the UK. Thank you.
  9. Ballerin, if your dc is already at vocational school, would ENBS not accept a med report from the current school? Just a thought.
  10. The contribution rates on the gov.uk tables are for tuition fees only and do not include boarding/accommodation costs, these are extra.
  11. Also brings back memories for me ... I took dd to see her first ballet when she was 6, it was ENB's Swan Lake in the round at the Royal Albert Hall. We had a box and she sat completely glued to the edge of her seat peering over the edge of the box for the whole performance completely mesmerized by it! Sorry to go off topic!
  12. Wow CeliB, this is the stuff ballet dreams are made of! Your son must be absolutely over the moon and you must be exploding with pride. Many congratulations to him, he must be incredibly talented indeed.
  13. For us, it was just that dd's dance school didn't participate in festivals, and I wouldn't have had the time to commit to them anyway.
  14. Speaking purely from our own personal experience ... My dd was a JA for three years and then an MA before going off to vocational school. We felt so incredibly lucky that she had the opportunity and she loved every second of it. The training she received at those sessions has been invaluable and contributed hugely towards her development. She commented recently that she loved the way she was taught and the lovely clean style and technique. Both of her JA and MA associate teachers were excellent. Dd never did festivals, but has had plenty of other performance opportunities over the years. Personally, I don't think she has missed out by not doing festivals, but I believe she gained so much from those associate classes. Dd and many of her JA peers are still in full-time training. RBS associates was special and I still miss it.
  15. I think 350 places includes both WL and Covent Garden.
  16. Definitely an international focus, the last time my dd did two weeks at WL SS at the end of year 10, i seem to recall that she was one of around only 6 or so british female students.
  17. Last year Rambert didn't publish dates, they just offer you a date on application. They did have quite a few dates though spread from feb-apr ish. Good luck to everyone currently in the thick of it this year.
  18. My dd is vocational and has done York (Yorkshire Ballet Summer School) for the last few years and absolutely loves it, very high standard. She will be applying again this year, she's in 6.1. They also have scholarship auditions in York and London and I think you can also apply for a bursary. Applications have just opened for York.
  19. If your dd goes ahead with the exam, can you not let the RAD know that she has been ill and also has an injury? A few years ago when my dd woke up vomiting on the morning she was due to travel to London for an RAD exam we had to cancel, but she was able to take the exam a week or so later even though she was still very weak. I seem to recall that she received some special consideration marks as part of her overall result. This was a few years ago though.
  20. Lema, Congratulations to your dd for getting to finals ... final audition basically consists of a ballet class and a physio examination. From memory they also get a tour of the school, as do the parents on finals day, as well as a look at the accommodation and possibly a talk from the principal and academic head. It's been a while since I was at finals with my dd, so the format may have changed a little. Best of luck.
  21. Vetty - would definitely go under-dressed ready for ballet as there aren't generally changing facilities available. Good luck to your dd.
  22. Would definitely echo the advice above to seek a professional medical opinion. A few years ago when my dd was 12, she started complaining of hip pain a couple of days after starting back at ballet lessons after the summer holidays. Fortunately we were able to see a consultant very quickly and when her hip was scanned there was quite a bit of fluid around the joint, which suggested an injury. It totally cleared up, but she was off dance for around half a term and was told to keep her weight off it as much as possible and definitely no physio.
  23. That does seem odd as a Dada is in effect a government funded means tested form of scholarship which doesn't have to be paid back whereas a student loan is just that, a loan which has to be paid back. They are completely different.
  24. Good luck to your dd for year 10 Cotes du rhone. x
