Lockdown and General Streaming Thread

just watched the POB Jerome Robbins programme, with slight difficulty - I think my set up, Internet on st tv dislikes French Tv as the picture kept breaking up, stopping, and similar problems. have had no trouble with anything else. However, it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the programme. The only ballet I had seen was Faune so it was great to see works that were new to me. Fancy Free was totally enjoyable and I found myself mentally casting it for the Royal. I think when The Age of Anxiety was last performed at the ROH someone on the forum suggested that Fancy Free would have been a better bet - I agree. Wasn't so keen on the Glass - probably because I don't enjoy his music, but the dancing certainly made up for it. Does anyone know if this is a fairly recent performance?- 1,212 replies

I was looking forward to this and it certainly didn't disappoint! I loved the costumes and sets, although I felt that the last scene didn't quite come off. Rudolph's scene with his mother was better than I've ever seen it; in fact I thought the first act was particularly stunning. If I may be a little bit nit picking, I thought both of the Vetsera pas de deux looked at times as though they were being a little careful - I didn't quite feel there was the easy flow that I've seen at ROH. But the total commitment of the whole cast was superb and made for a thoroughly satisfying performance. And I agree with the comments about the Hungarian officers - think there was a potential Rudolph in the lead dancer, I also noticed that Ed Watson had been involved in coaching - if anyone knows what it's about he should! Hopefully there will be a DVD in due course.

No, not your computer. I listened to it through my perfectly good audio system and for some time wasn't sure what language they were singing in!

I've watched this so many times, it's so beautiful, says so much, sadly reminds me of what we are missing, in spite of all the goodies available. -

I've just received an email from the Friends Office adding another couple of items for our delectation. Gloriana and Winters Tale. I'm distinctly underwhelmed. I realise there are probably copyright issues but surely they could have done, better than just stick a few dvds on?

The Met is streaming opera for free every night. I think mostly older versions - last night Eugene Onegin with Renee Fleming, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Production weird but what a performance! Next week is Wagner week.- 1,212 replies

No ballet - just the Rachmaninov and Wolf songs. There was an announcement at the end, but only in German- 1,212 replies

I saw his first performance as Rudolph, and while the dance element was superb, his acting and interpretation was pretty basic. However, the DVD shows that his interpretation had really been worked on and refined, and in fact I think he gets closer to the character than other current interpreters. Not to say it's the interpretation I most enjoy but that's another matter!

Have just received an email from the Arcola theatre advising that they are closing 'until further notice' . Obviously smaller theatres do not have the resources th big nationals have. A great pity - they do excellent work. -
Probably a sign of the times - I attended a Chamber music concert this morning at my local theatre. it was billed as sold out but was actually about half full. The concert, one of a very popular and usually well attended series does attract an older audience, so it seems that a large number of my vulnerable age group is already self isolating.

ninamargaret replied to alison's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
First of all, let me say that my knowledge of ballet history is pretty small and someone on the forum will probably be able to correct my comments, for which I will be grateful. It seems to me that we have little detailed information about Petipa's choreography and that most productions of his ballets have been a combination of dancers passing on their memories and teaching younger dancers, notes left by Petipa plus assorted photographs, memoirs etc. Therefore it seems inevitable that choreographers over the years should alter, amend, invent new choreography and while we can lament the loss of the Ashton choreography (which I enjoyed) it is not unreasonable for choreographers to add their two pennyworth to the mix.- 175 replies

Enjoyed this evening, although DAAG slightly less and Cellist slightly more! DAAG was less 'classical' than the first cast -more humour, and lovely performances particularly from the women. Sambe's Brown boy very different to Campbell; he doesn't have the same lines as Campbell,or the same quality of stillness, but I loved his apparent enjoyment of the role. James Hay, as always, good to see. I still have my reservations about The Cellist, but felt that, although this was only the second performance for this cast that it had settled, somewhat. If anything, I like Stix-Brunell more than Lauren Cuthbertson, but it's a very close call. Calvin Richardson good, maybe Sambe slightly more bendy but little in it. At the end there was just about the largest standing ovation I've seen when Hetty Snell came on stage - as another poster, has commented it's a strange phenomenon!

Please don't! It's one of my favourite ballets, but we all have our blind spots - it's what makes this forum so interesting, and no one was rude to me when I suggested that I'd happily have ditched the Cellist and seen DAAG twice!

The Nunez/Bonelli pas on Facebook is, to my mind a thing of rare beauty. Let's hope a DVD of the whole ballet becomes available.

Royal Ballet 2019/20 Spring Season Casting
ninamargaret replied to Lizbie1's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
Haven't seen the McGregor, apart from a horribly fuzzy clip on You Tube. As zxDaveM says the costumes for Corybantic Games are rather offputting, but it's OK. Prodigal Son is, if memory serves correctly, rather different to the Balanchine we have become used to. So could be an interesting programme.Give it a try!- 108 replies
