  1. Lovely to see two very beautiful dancers from RBS joining the company.
  2. As a teacher, on another note, we hope that a parent would recognise whether a school is under the umbrella of one of the reputable examining bodies. However so often this does not seem to matter to parents, who often look for convenience and, as I noticed on a social networking site, one parent who did not want a "serious" school. She actually wanted to know if there was a "good teacher locally who taught 'proper classes' but not a serious school" but that did exams and her DD was quite keen on dancing as a career?! I didn't respond but I think Dr Dance this is a very interesting topic and my only other comment is that the ones that are meant to make it find their way eventually. And I don't believe it is always too late. I had a lovely girl who joined me at 12 like Bambi and gained a DADA at ENBS at 16 but it was probably cutting it fine!!
  3. I've always found freeds break in and mould most easily to feet. Bloch take a while and are quite wide. Gamba used to be lovely but I dont think you can get them now. Capezio tend to be hard in my experience.
  4. I saw the whole thing at the opera house when they visited the uk. Incredible skill and precision!
  5. I'd like to add N for NINETTE DE VALOIS (Dame) for the foresight of sound dance education and giving so much inspiration directly and through the generations if dancers following her legacy.
  6. I did gymnastics from age 5-10 and have had a lot of students come from a gym background incl an England rhythmic gymnast. There are the posture negatives but as I think i have mentioned on a previous post I find these students attitudes outstanding compared to their peers. Poss coincidence who knows. Several members of RB have a strong gymnastic training and one of the british WL and US trained girls in grad year has just got an RB apprenticeship and she was a rhythmic gymnast pre WL. I say go for it with a good ballet teacher at your side!
  7. Thank you. Miss Keelan is still there and I did teacher training with David Yow
  8. Sorry just re read she is 13 and just starting inter. I would hold the dance works info for future as being in with adults will be daunting !! Is she doing RAD? My mum also paid for me to do a couple of private lessons at the rad at that time of year they were invaluable but depends on who you get teaching and I had to be quite firm about how my teacher wished me to do something or just nod and do as I was told then change back for my teacher. But it really helped with some of my corrections.
  9. I used to go to dance works and do classes from the age of 14. I recommend Anna de Boisson and Zina Mamedovas Classes. They are a big challenge and she may feel more comfortable with a friend there. I don't recommend to my students to do until they are in Advanced grades I started when I was in Adv foundation as it's called now which was intermediate part one then. My associate friends and I used to all meet there and go in together while our mums went for a coffee in self ridges.
  10. Sorry I meant the summer fair not Gailene's service.
  11. How do you go about going to this? I've not been since I was at the school can I just turn up with my family and buy a ticket at the gate? 2 adults a 3 yr old and babe in arms or is it now not suitable for young children? Where is best place to park? Just thinking about going to see my students there and old teachers.
  12. Emma Jane Maguire soloist with The Royal Ballet and her family have set up a charity to provide bursaries for students in the Arts - Dance, Drama and Language in memory of hers and Kerry's mother Ann who died so tragically. You can donate at http://www.justgiving.com - search for Ann Maguire it is the Leeds community Ann Maguire Educational fund. I knew Emma and Kerry during my teens and we did performances together with NYB and Emma was at WL whilst I was at RBS US. Ann was an inspiring and very kind lady and it is heartbreaking she is no longer with us. Many thanks.
  13. Thank you I will do so. Sorry only just seen this post
  14. It is refreshing to see a parent take note of these wishes. So many of my students parents do not support they're child's 'demands' but things like good outdoor shoes etc do matter and I am glad it doesn't always go unnoticed.
  15. I don't know if I can put this on any other threads but Emma and her family have set up a charity to provide bursaries for students in the Arts Dance and Language. You can donate at http://www.justgiving.com and search for Ann Maguire it is the Leeds community Ann Maguire Educational fund.
  16. Two of my students will be on week one they are Adv grades not sure which group and 3 on week two in Adv grades again also one younger 9 yr old but not sure which week she is doing.
  17. In defence of RBS US up until recently the lady who made the leotards ensured each Leo had the support each individual girl required. She has retired so I can't speak for now. Is it worth seeing if a body stocking has support in to wear under the Leo? Failing that my mother used to sew in a support layer for my friend. I never had an issue though I would now.
  18. I remember Capezio being a nightmare to dull down! But bashing them on concrete is a good start and steaming the blocks over steam from a kettle then tread in a tiny bit of water just to dampen the soles.
  19. yes that was my typical pushing to the limits comment. Really though just once I think I would choose The Dream Titania is a great personality and the choreography and music are divine!
  20. If it is for a day, and this is heaven, I'd like to do a matinee of Symphonic Variations; Fonteyn's role with Bonelli McRae Polunin Cuthbertson and Nunez and The Dream - Titania with McRae in a Triple bill, and then evening Manon with Bonelli!
  21. I've had an 18 yr old audition for RBS, ENBS, Central, Rambert,Laines and Studio Centre this yr she got scholarships at Laines, and LSC and places at Rambert and Central. She is off to Rambert. No where turned her app away and said it was fine for her to audition esp as she was from non voc background as she hadn't done any sort of dance qual only a levels in other subjects.
