  1. I agree. His inn solo was another case of squeaky shoes and wobbly arabesques but somehow I found I could overlook that because he was so much in the character & everything Osipova did was so interesting it was always possible to look elsewhere. As the ballet progressed his solos became more urgent & desperate so, unusually for me, I just didn't care whether he was technically outstanding or not.
  2. Oh yes indeed & I felt she was MUCH better than her first performance although I'm not suggesting that wasn't very good more a reflection of how extraordinary she was last night. We are incredibly lucky to have such a unique and talented dancer based in London. I can't help wondering what she might do with Mary Vetsera in the future. They were electrifying together & richly deserved the rare standing ovation from the stalls. I never really felt the connection between them in any of their previous performances but last night was oh so different. Even the three gentlemen (Dyer, Hristov, Zucchetti) rose to the occasion and for once managed to dance the entire variation in time
  3. Does anyone know how far in advance of performances Stuttgart generally announce casting and is it generally possible to buy tickets relatively last minute ? Thank you
  4. I had the impression last night that the performance had divided opinions amongst ballet regulars and so it seems here. Much as thought Osipova's interpretation unique and thought provoking and her dancing wonderful, the evening fell completely flat. I can only put that down to something in the emotional connection between Osipova and Acosta that didn't touch me. The drunk scene was as tired as it has been in every performance of this run although I very much liked Clare Calvert's mistress.
  5. Bruce, did you know that the Bolshoi are taking Shrew to Monaco Grimaldi Forum for 3 performances in December (19,20,21mat). The 19th looks like a private event but tickets for 20 & 21 are on sale (top price euros 48).
  6. I can't recall seeing a better debut. Also interesting for me is that her interpretation didn't remind me of anyone else I'd seen (Bruce has put it very well "mixing a defining innocence with an exotic sensuality") She'd clearly thought about how she wanted to portray Manon and to have the confidence to do that in your debut and bring it off is quite something. Can't agree about Alexander Campbell: yes his dancing is crisp and he energises the stage early on but I thought his drunk scene way OTT never was it truer that "less is more" Bennet Gartside's excellent Gaoler being a perfect example.
  7. The Friends General rehearsal today was Lamb & Pennefather. I know we don't generally comment on rehearsals but given the slow ticket sales for this run, I want to say that they were terrific and there are plenty of tickets left for the matinee on Saturday at, I believe, discounted prices. Grab a bargain !
  8. Although I think both versions are acceptable, my spelling comes from the cast sheet which is the same as the Mariinsky website ! I believe the difference is whether the name is translated "phonetically" or not. The cast sheet translation means that english speakers pronunciation would be closer to the Russian pronunciation
  9. Dave, lovely photos ! Your second photo above is Andrei Yermakov (Titania's Cavalier) not Filipp Stepin.
  10. I echo your praise for Shklyarov's Apollo, and for his and Tereshkina's performances generally. This Balanchine double bill is terrific. On first sight I much preferred the Ashton Dream but on a second viewing I appreciated the Balanchine version far more and with it's glorious Act 2 dancing it is pitch perfect for this brilliant company. Last night casting was outstanding at every level and it's heartening to see a number of younger dancers who demonstrate great promise for the future.
  11. I went with low expectations, being steeped in MacMilan & consequently hating the L production when the company brought it in 2009. But time marches on and I've watched so many MacMillan in the intervening years that this early L version has a refreshing quality to my eye. Yes, the big pdd lack MacMillian's naturalism which is so appealing to a contemporary eye but there are compensations, not least the absence of dancing harlots. The Russian style seems to require a certain level of hamming up the bit parts but if that's remotely ludicrous at times it all becomes insignificant when the lead couple are as toweringly good as they were on opening night. At last, in Shklyarov and Vishneva I'm watching a partnership of equals: a Romeo and Juliet who are matched in dramatic intensity, ability to execute the steps superbly and whose appearance requires no suspension of disbelief. Terrific !
  12. Kimin Kim was the (very splendid) Bronze Idol; the three shades were Batoeva, Ivannikova and Stepanova; Manu was Oksana Marchuk. Tereshkina and Shklyarov were terrific. I enjoyed the relay and I hope the Mariinsky follow the Bolshoi lead with more "live" transmissions. Being picky, I thought the choice of camera focus was odd in places. The Odeon Covent Garden did it's best to deafen us until Bluebird sorted them out
  13. Checking the casting on the RoH site it looks like some more casting changes for the London tour : no Korsuntsev, Kondaurova, Shirinkina. Possibly injuries, certainly in the case of Korsuntsev.
  14. Ismene, I'm very grateful for your translations of the Russian newspaper reviews. Thank you
  15. Also very sorry indeed to hear this. I've always enjoyed reading Jane's thoughtful, balanced and well informed reviews.
  16. Gee, not more Swan Lakes to add to the long Mariinsky run but I really want to take a look at Lebedev …..
  17. I found where to enter the code and I did and clicked the update tab but then the ticket prices are the same i.e. just the usual full price weird
  18. I was tempted, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere in the RoH checkout process to enter the offer code…….
  19. I agree with you re Hallberg. His presence at the Bolshoi puzzles me, I find him technically and dramatically in a lower league than the current roster of Bolshoi men. That's not to say he's not a very good dancer just IMO not good enough to warrant him being at the Bolshoi.
  20. I'm excited by the casting - we're getting the opportunity to see some of the up and coming dancers in the company. Just to give two examples : I've watched Yulia Stepanova on YT over the last few years and am thrilled she's dancing Swan Lake in London (she only recently made her debut in St Pete) with Xander Parish. Kimin Kim also features in many YT clips & he looks a terrific virtuoso dancer with a beautiful line. And then there's the sublime Mariinsky corps ....
  21. Late to the party ……. I agree with Bruce, YES PLEASE to a dislike button. Why should dislike require any more explanation than like ? It seems to me that like=agree and dislike=disagree, I wouldn't be upset if people disagreed with me - why should I be ? We all see things differently. Maybe "disagree" would be less pejorative than "dislike". As for anonymity issues raised above, most of the posters on here don't use names that make them readily identifiable anyway.
  22. I saw Lantratov & Vishneva opening night in Paris and I thought they had a fine performance. Lantratov is a lovely dancer with a vivid, warm stage presence and Vishneva was exceptional both dancing and acting. I didn't see Hallberg and Obratzsova but I friend saw both casts and preferred Lantratov/Vishneva. I didn't find the ballet compelling but it was a treat to see the Bolshoi and being Ratmansky it's packed with dancing and being the Bolshoi the dancing is all very high standard. If you plan to see it at the cinema I'd recommend watching the clips on Youtube beforehand and reading the synopsis, I found it helped my appreciation.
  23. LOL ! I am a "mature" part time student of sorts but I doubt that counts ! I meant no stalls circle standing.
