  1. La Scala's homage to Nureyev is available here, I think until Sunday https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ghuTOOtdfhA&feature=emb_imp_woyt I really enjoyed it, although would have been happy without the reminder of Nureyev's choreography for Romeo and Juliet! Other than that, a nice range of pieces and some good performances.
  2. I really enjoyed this. I do take your point in the review about the changing camera angles, but I was happy enough with the presentation and felt I always had a good view of the dancing. I thought Skylar Brandt was incredible in the Rose Adagio - such control in the balances! Really enjoyed the other two excerpts - especially the beautiful Pas de Deux from The Seasons. Although both left me wishing I could see the full ballets! I actually thought Bernstein in a Bubble was great to watch. The blend of playfulness and wonderful dancing put me in mind of Bright Stream a little bit. I'll be watching again a few times while it's still available!
  3. Thanks Richard this was lovely to watch and Takada seemed on amazing form. Left me hoping that the full film might materialise some day!
  4. Norwegian Ballet are streaming new productions of Afternoon of a Faun and BolΓ©ro from tomorrow evening until 7th April: https://operaen.no/en/Productions/faun-bolero-ballet/
  5. Sorry to hear that. To be fair Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Giselle and Romeo and Juliet are all incredibly popular ballets. Even if some of the storylines are sad, I still find going to see live ballet an uplifting experience. There's also the two programmes for the summer still to be announced - maybe they will contain happier choices?
  6. I was close to putting either Winter's Tale or Woolf Works, but was partly influenced by the knowledge that we're expecting Dante project and a new Wheeldon 3 act ballet. Although I guess I shouldn't have let that influence my choice in this fantasy season!
  7. Another one scheduled and lost to Covid was the new work with Acosta and Alessandra Ferri. Would love to see that if there's a chance it can go ahead next season.
  8. This is now rescheduled to 28th March https://www.teatroallascala.org/en/season/2020-2021/ballet/homage-to-nureyev.html
  9. I watched it on Friday night and loved it just as much as back in the autumn. I'd actually forgotten some of the lovely performances and the subtle bits of activity around the edges. Really pleased to be able to see the full performance again!
  10. I wonder if this factored into the decision - to save the Petipa until more people are comfortable attending in person and restrictions have hopefully eased further. Personally I've really enjoyed seeing recordings / streams of WTGH and Crystal Pite's work but never seen either in person so the programming works for me. Plus after a year following many of the Royal Ballet dancers through these difficult circumstances on social media etc, with just a few chances to perform in autumn and early December, it'll be wonderful to see them do anything on stage πŸ™‚
  11. I don't think most of the ballet programming has been announced has it? Really exciting news but sounds like a long wait (5 weeks?) to find out what will be in the second and third programmes! I guess it builds excitement though! (Presumably in practice they're still finalising details...) I'm glad to see there will be streaming too! Although hope to be able to get to London for some in person as well πŸ™‚
  12. Is that an option offered by the ROH? I have to admit I'd personally much rather have the chance to buy things on DVD (or even better Blu Ray) than settle for a download, even if there's a big price difference.
  13. Really pleased about this one 😊 my laptop wasn't streaming very well back in the autumn but I've since bought a new one so will be great to see this in all its glory!
  14. Thank you both. What a wonderful video, I thoroughly enjoyed that πŸ™‚
  15. That's a shame - it's actually my favourite of the fairy variations! Although I have to admit to really enjoying them all, which perhaps isn't a universally held view. I have noticed how difficult the lilac fairy solo looks though. I wonder if anyone has good examples of dancers who have performed this particularly well? I remember enjoying watching Claire Calvert dance it on DVD, but I haven't been back to watch it since I became more familiar with Sleeping Beauty.
  16. I really enjoyed watching the second cast of the BRB Nutcracker last night. Just as wonderfully filmed as the first and some lovely performances again 😊
  17. Thanks! Yes, that's definitely the one I saw. Really pleased it's coming out on DVD πŸ™‚
  18. This was briefly streamed during the first lockdown and was wonderful. So I expect / hope it's the same version. Also featuring Martina Arduino, so similar to the casting of their Giselle.
  19. Many thanks SheilaC, for an extremely interesting and helpful description of the pieces. I'm even more inclined to re-watch with those in mind - perhaps especially In The Night, which I think should be much clearer following your explanation. It's interesting to know that my reaction isn't uncommon. In that case I wonder if it may be a case of taking time to get used to a different style. I have a few Paris Opera Ballet DVDs that I haven't had chance to watch yet, so look forward to seeing them and hopefully learning a little more.
  20. The first Royal Ballet gala was certainly in front of a selected audience. I had forgotten this originally. The second set of gala type performances were intended to be in front of a paying audience, but only one night was possible due to the lockdown. However a further night was filmed and streamed (on stage) with only a small number of ROH staff in the audience. I think the original point that these are difficult times and that performing in front of an empty theatre is very difficult was well made to be honest. I also echo an earlier post in greatly appreciating all companies who stream content for us in these times. I did enjoy the POB gala, but was just a little confused by some aspects of the presentation, which I decided to explore in case there was a useful style explanation. It seems like there probably wasn't. Maybe it was even a function of my mood at the time I watched it. I haven't seen much by POB, but I will be exploring further and may even re-watch this gala if I have chance before it disappears πŸ™‚
  21. True enough. I have seen and greatly enjoyed other very recent performances to empty theatres (San Francisco Ballet virtual gala and last night's La Scala Giselle for example). But since everyone else seems to have enjoyed the POB gala, probably it's just my own lack of ballet watching experience. Or maybe the style just happens to not be to my taste.
  22. Sorry, I wasn't thinking of the Grand Defile. I did wonder if it was due to the lack of audience, which as you say would understandably have an effect. I just found it a contrast to the joy of the dancing in the Royal Ballet galas and genuinely wondered if it might be an artistic decision - to let the steps speak for themselves.
  23. I've just seen the POB gala. I'm not familiar at all with POB. I enjoyed and thought the dancing was beautiful and precise from start to finish, but at the same time I have to confess I didn't feel a lot of personality from the dancing - the facial expressions were generally very blank. Is this a deliberate style choice?
