  1. Here's the link for Ballet Cymru's lovely production of Cinderella: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NZTstS7Mvxo Currently transmitting live but will be available for 48 hours I believe.
  2. Ballet Cymru have announced on social media that their next streamed performance will be Cinderella, on Sunday 24th May at 2pm. This will be available on their YouTube channel: https://t.co/O1CFBruSYG?amp=1 I saw this ballet at the Riverfront in Newport and it was wonderful! The choreography and music are both original.
  3. Very excited about The Cellist! I'd been looking forward to it all season, but missed both the cinema broadcast and the performance I booked for due to illness. I guess it's a tricky balance choosing the right things to show, but this at least fulfils one wish (showing something not already available on DVD). I guess Winter's Tale would have been quite a good one for less experienced ballet watchers?
  4. Well that was a really lovely PNB production of Giselle. Great to see those historic touches and I agree really nice to contrast with Ratmansky's Bolshoi version. Feeling very privileged to have been able to see this performance - another one not filmed with the intention of broadcasting, although I enjoyed the simple wide angle with well chosen slight zooms. The second act was particularly beautiful, thanks in part to some of the most stunning costumes I've seen in ballet. I also loved the part where the veils came off! Wonderful performances too. Glad to have a few days of access to this - at the very least I'll watch the second act again before it runs out! Thanks so much Jeannette for sharing the information on this.
  5. Wonderful! Thanks for the info Jeanette, so much simpler than I expected! I'm looking forward to watching the PNB Giselle this afternoon ๐Ÿ™‚
  6. Thanks Jeannette, sounds like a few Mariinsky ballets have been released on DVD in Japan but not elsewhere. Do you have any tips for buying from Japanese Amazon? It seemed quite impenetrable to someone who can't read Japanese when I tried once, but I assume there must be a trick to it.
  7. I've just received my email with link to the PNB Giselle house party. The Giselle video is available to view (for those who donated) until 13th May.
  8. I can't disagree with any of the comments on the Nureyev production. Act 1 in particular I think misses the mark. But this particular performance just overcame some of that for me - I guess more in the second and especially third acts. Due solely to the wonderful performances and the unusual sense of intimacy brought about by the filming circumstances. For what it's worth, my own favourite productions are the Macmillan and Ratmansky. The latter mainly for the beautiful steps, based on the Bolshoi cinema performance a couple of years ago.
  9. I really enjoyed this last night. From the one previous time I've seen it (on DVD) I'm not a huge fan of Nureyev's choreography. But thought the performances here were great. I was completely gripped by act 3 in particular - Cojocaru was incredible. But also something about the whole atmosphere made it feel even more intense than usual. This was another filmed version very clearly not meant for public viewing, with bits of the action apparently only available from what seemed to be some kind of security camera. Another angle showed the full orchestra playing while the dancing and the action unfolded in front of them. For me at least, this unexpectedly added an intimacy not usually present when watching filmed ballets. Perhaps more of a sense of being there. Another video I feel lucky to have been able to watch. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DvZS5LJQwqo
  10. Thanks Amelia, I loved this last summer but I'd forgotten just how good it is - pure joy! Might have to try and watch a second time before the 24 hours is up
  11. Ballet Cymru's The Light Princess is now available here, I think for 48 hours https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mPoSCo2wswY A small company but this is a charming and often beautiful production.
  12. Thanks, I thought this was wonderful and beautifully filmed. I wonder if this was produced for a DVD?
  13. Ballet Cymru have announced on social media that they will be streaming some performances on their YouTube channel, starting with The Light Princess on Sunday afternoon. The most information I've seen so far is on their Facebook page: The YouTube channel is here: https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCusHNEiSVMvyNaYLIWtmWOg/?fbclid=IwAR0zhtkB3GMooVVmMW2H7k_ekLM6fQT_jwjADfmXfQkNHhz3w0_v90u-CtA
  14. The Rome Opera Ballet Sleeping Beauty shared by WoodlandGladeFairy on a separate thread has the Cinderella segment I've just discovered. First time I've seen it anywhere! Also the Lilac Fairy variation is in Act 3.
  15. This is a really wonderful production - lovely start to my Easter Sunday! Thanks so much for the link and recommendation ๐Ÿ™‚ I've only seen Sylvia once before - on the Royal Ballet DVD a few years ago when I first started watching ballet. Will definitely re-visit and keep an eye out for other productions. A beautiful ballet!
  16. Unfortunately the Royal New Zealand Ballet offerings only seem to be available live at the times they stream - all of which are in the middle of the night if you live in Europe. It's a shame, I was really looking forward to Midsummer Night's Dream, but couldn't stay awake till 2am. I am very thankful though for all the other incredible things I've been able to watch from around the world ๐Ÿ™‚
  17. Yes, a search on YouTube seemed the easiest way to find it for me. Absolutely incredible performance - gripping from start to finish. Vogel was outstanding, but fantastic dancing and acting throughout. I really liked the sets on the whole although found the back drop for the final pas de deux a bit plain and bright - didn't quite match the atmosphere of the scene I didn't think. But perhaps the intention was to focus entirely on the dancers - who certainly brought more than enough atmosphere and drama on their own!
  18. Many thanks li tai po, I've just watched the Ratmansky Don Quixote and found it to be absolutely wonderful - really nice production!
  19. Many thanks capybara, I hadn't seen that. Sounds potentially promising!
  20. Aren't these ballets both avaliable on DVD? Or are they showing different performances to those that are commercially available? I wonder if they have any scope to show past cinema broadcasts that never made it on to DVD? I've seen tantalising clips of a few that I didn't see at the time. Sleeping Beauty and Romeo and Juliet both with Lamb / McRae being particularly high up on my wish list!
  21. I saw both shows yesterday, my first experiences of Onegin other than the Stuttgart Ballet DVD. Really blown away by what a wonderful ballet this is - a beautiful, incredibly well choreographed and deeply emotional piece. I agree with everything that has been said about the truly wonderful evening performance. Perhaps controversially, I enjoyed the matinรฉe cast even more. Mendizabal was a revelation as Tatiana - the first time I've seen her in such a major role. Such elegant but also often exciting dancing - the way she spun around Soares' body in the mirror pdd was breathtaking. And she portrayed the character perfectly - incredible acting. Soares himself was masterful as Onegin. And the acting of Hinkis was wonderful as Olga - she had posted exerts of Pushkin's poem on Instagram before the performance and the way she danced, it was clear that she felt and clearly portrayed every word. Two remarkable performances!
  22. A really enjoyable performance for the cinema, with very many standout moments, as has been mentioned above. It's all personal preference of course, but I think Gina Storm Jensen is really lovely at the mime and acting parts of lilac fairy and for me looks absolutely perfect as a good fairy. I agree that others have been more secure in the solo, but as Rob S commented, she has improved this through the run and I'm sure will continue to do so in future.
  23. Just beat me to it Mary. But yes, I'd been meaning to say that I thought Hinkis made a lovely Princess Florine.
  24. He was indeed. And his act 3 solo was a truly magnificent thing to behold! Both he and Marianela made it all look easy. An incredible and beautiful performance ๐Ÿ™‚
