  1. “…. you let the music in and dance it out.” Ed Watson This in just a few words is imho a perfect distillation as to what ballet is to a dancer… Love this quote from Ed Watson in a very good article - thx for link
  2. I’m sure there will be soaces feeling up so 🤞🏻 Twice we (sadly) turned summer places down, attending instead Spring & Autumn ones as decided then were more cost effective for us (shorter so fees less & hotel accommodation much cheaper than in the Summer)
  3. I learn with teens as there were not enough adults to keep the adult class going and also, not many adults seem to want to do exams. The teens have all been great though and just accept me as another member of the class so don't right it off as an idea straight away! Be wary - not necessarily of the teens themselves - but sometimes their rather sniffy dance moms…. I was - I’m pretty sure - denied doing my RAD inter (aged 50) with a class of older teens/early 20’s at my usual school & am sure it was all down to one mum who just has never liked me & completely blanks me no matter how hard I try to be friendly & nice to both her & her offspring… I luckily found another school with a 30something wanting to take her exam too & 1 week later the entry was in & 3 months later we took our exam at RAD HQ! (And just as an aside… I think I actually took exam sooner than the offspring of the mean mum & we both achieved merits, so I clearly would not have ‘held’ them back at all!) I do say GO FOR IT to any adult dancer who would like the challenge of taking an exam….I wish I’d had the guts to explore the idea of taking exams much earlier (I returned to ballet in my 40’s) & sadly think further ones now out of question after 3 years with minimal dance…..but you never know 😘 Ever the optimist! Good luck all!
  4. Interesting their discount codes worked for an international order! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
  5. Bravo! Can I ask if you ordered just via online communication or over telephone? And did you ask for student or pro dancer discount? Hoping to know what’s the norm as suspect we may need to order via USA one of these days too…(now I know WHAT is correct sizing 😂)
  6. Am pretty sure yet have run this before…. No experience of intensive but had happy years & great all round training at the full time school….wish it had been able to offer more classical focus when required in older years & perhaps maybe now is possible?
  7. Must say, that would be my ideal too! But with rubbish & really expensive train route meaning I usually do a 3.5 hour drive....best if i can stick to one trip!!
  8. so searching through ROH website, I'm seeing a chance to do both as likely need to stay over anyhow....so, see try see Jewels Sat night then the Sunday afternoon gala!! Others doing this?
  9. what is the 'gala' element? was a bit disappointed by recent ROH gala....just felt like a pretty usual night to me! Had expected some 'bells & whistles'!
  10. It's good to hear how dance journeys progress & change paths - thank you for sharing & good luck with your DC's future!
  11. So...looks like the Hubbie might treat me to tickets to this!! Never before seen any Balanchine performed live nor have I seen the Australian Ballet so super excited!! Would folks on here recommend any particular show as best to go to? I was wondering if when there are visiting companies its best experience to go to an opening or maybe last night? Any opinions would be great - thank you!
  12. Yorke Dance Project springs to mind too.....
  13. Maybe more Midlands but I'm sure easy to get to... https://www.thedancersroom.co.uk/ Becky is really helpful & whilst we've only had fittings by her at a school many years ago & never actually visited the store, she still sources pointe shoes 7 other dance kit for us when needed with quick delivery to wherever needed! They also offer a pointe shoe loyalty scheme too which helps lower costs.... Also, Just Ballet (I guess also north midlands area?)
  14. I do hope you didn't make the error we made when ordering from (Bloch) USA.....their size guide at the time suggested shoes all went up 2 sizes.....it failed to mention NOT in pointe shoes though (think website has been updated now!!).....so we had 5 pairs of massive shoes turn up!! Had paid huge shipping cost, then got hit up for about £30 customs, then paid nearly £80 to return & lost out on the exchange rate both buying & then in the refund & of course didn't benefit from the student discount offered in UK.....I reckon we wasted money equal to well over one & a half pairs - aghhh! Oh, & then the hubbie pointed out a few weeks later that my phone call to Bloch USA to get required confirmation that ok to return cost over £50 on my mobile bill....oops!! So, actually that was more like the loss of price of 2 pairs of pointe shoes!!!!
  15. Just a note to those awaiting results/waitlists etc....best of luck & by no means feel sad if places do not free up....lots of happy dance opportunities to still be had I'm sure! Experience of very many Easter/Summer/Autumn intensives & day course over the years (incl. YBSS/RBS/ENBS/Elmhurst/Tring/Malvern/RAD amongst others) Quite new to MBS (& not been to Summer held in Uppingham I believe not Malvern now?) but it has become the happiest one! It attracts dancers across the board incl. the very high standard ones (& lots of older boys too!) but does seem to be a bit more chilled out....not the 'this barre is just for dancers from the such & such prestigious school' that you sometimes can annoyingly get! Maybe as it's not specifically linked to a vocational school too it takes away any competitive/treat every class as an audition vibe that can creep in? Great value for money too IMO. Of course, every dancer will have their own favourites & great to experience a broad selection as possible!
  16. Pack of cards perhaps - card games seem to be 'back in' !! Swimwear in case of opportunity for swimming or sunbathing....And sunscreen as they will no doubt sit out if sunny & nothing worse than sunburn when dancing. Am sure she'll love her experience - mine have been doing them from a very early age & always very happy to have new experiences!
  17. prefer seated together if possible...all price ranges considered...thank you!
  18. I see me too of ROH/Linbury…. Are they coming to UK? Do hope so!
  19. Very wise to research as much as you can. I think it’s so much better to start as you mean to go on & take the position of being a customer with expectations that deserve tk be met. Too often we - parents & pupils - feel so humbled & blessed to be offered places that we feel unable to ask Q’s or make demands that actually our fees justify us tk make! Be bold - they want & need YOU!
  20. Big bath towels with loops on (or add a loop) to hang on hooks. If radiator in room an over radiator airer to put said towels on to dry. Many seem to take plastic 3 or 4 drawer units like a mini chest of drawers…. Ideal for undies/dance kit/school books - whatever really. Also under bed storage boxes with lids - the ones with a hinged open half at tone lid on wheels really work well to store bedding or shoes or school books - do wait til there to ensure buy ones of right height to go under bed…
  21. I’ve heard - certainly in year 2 anyhow - that there is less ballet than some would hope for at LCDS sp definitely check out timetables & find out likely hours or opportunities to add any extra ballet etc. good luck!
  22. I second what glowlight said! Huge congratulations & good luck with decisions & ongoing training!
  23. I used to daily fantasise in the late 80’s as I passed by on my way to work about what could be created within the majestic brick & giant Grecian columned structure! Finally there has been a transformation…. A family member visited recently & took some great photos for me…. Sadly they say it seems to be mostly high brow designer shopping arcade for public visitors but maybe there is more???
