    Hammond final

Good luck to everyone at Hammond today x
  2. And your lovely DD should have the chance of that dream ballet queen. xx
  3. Yes I think locked just means no more replies can be posted to it - they can still be read though. Perhaps if anyone wants not to post publicly you could use private message on here.
  4. My daughter has just done the easter course and it was fantastic. She came home wishing it was running all next week too. Rep with Roberta Marquez learning Don Quixote was one of her highlights! She came home inspired and buzzing. We have signed up already for the summer course.
  5. Francessizzi it is the 25-29 July - I've booked dd on already. The dancing at the end we got to watch was fantastic. My daughter was on such a high she came home and continued working on the don Quixote variation till collapsing at 10 on the sofa exhausted - just wouldn't stop! So inspiring for her to have the opportunity to learn from so many great dancers and teachers this week.
  6. No double trouble she is just turned 11 so is in the other group. She said last night she wishes it was carrying on all next week. She is LOVING it.
  7. Also, worth bearing in mind that physique is a factor re JAs, if you don't have aspects of the physique they are looking for you may be unsuccessful regardless of level of flexibility or dance technique.
  8. Yep mine too! She was shattered last night ????????
  9. DD and I watched it in Westfield and were the only people applauding! We didn't care. Totally agree, Mendizabal was disappointing, almost clumsy looking. And the close ups were fantastic. When Vadim was jumping DD and I couldn't help ourselves and were cheering quietly, ha. Edited to add: And the corps were breathtaking in Act two
  10. Thank you Dr Dance! I felt that it wasn't safe and was in fact irresponsible but was looking for an expert opinion, because as I said I am not trained in dance or dance physio, however it looks dangerous!
  11. You are right Dr Dance. I am surprised by what I see on the instagram and Facebook pages of some dance schools in this country with young girls being pulled into what looks to me like dangerous oversplits with their legs bent back behind them by other children (surely that isn't safe??). Or girls who are under ten doing 'needles' 'scorpions' etc. I really do worry about what is being done to their young bodies. But these sorts of schools have slogans like No Pain no Gain, and there looks to be an attitude that if you don't force your body into these extreme stretches you are not up there in the pecking order. I would like to know are these sorts of things ok in your opinion as I am not an expert? No school my dd has danced at has encouraged this sort of thing. Although some of the girls from these schools are very strong and flexible as a result of this intense training and stretching and interesting to see when we have been at finals for lower schools this year that they have got places, so it would seem that schools are looking for this level of extreme flexibility - I find it very confusing.
  12. On the Royal Ballet school Annual Report thread figures back this up - 95% of students taken into WL last year were JAs. (International students made up the other 5% I believe). The head of outreach who picks JAs also does the prelim auditions for WL year 7 so appears he is choosing JAs for finals, so obvs JAs make up the people who get places. If you don't have the JA body you are already out of the running, which was what this thread was all about originally when it was on the associates results thread. What is also worth considering is that this year I believe 4/5 students were assessed out of year 9 WL, and someone else posted on upper schools thread that of the original wl cohort taken in year 7, only 2 of those have got into US this year from yr 11. Perhaps it doesn't remain that it is all about the body as students get older, and other factors come into play?
  13. Fonteyn also didn't have flat turnout or wonderful 'banana' feet. I fear she would not have made it through JA selections these days! And interesting to note that it seems more and more at year 7 WL are only taking JAs (for girls anyhow). The quote from Luke Jennings article above perfectly sums up what we have been talking about, thank you Melody
  14. Gosh Primrose they didn't do this two weeks ago when dd was at finals at Elmhurst. She would have been up in arms if they had I expect!
  15. This does sound interesting, are you able to put a link up or reference the title of the article Hairbelles?!
  16. I agree Kate-N and Tulip. I think we were trying to make the point though that certain things have not been deemed aesthetically necessary in the past and people were wondering how that would affect the fact that some renowned dancers of recent times do not always fit exactly the aesthetic ideals in certain schools at the moment.
  17. Ah, thanks for explaining proudmum. By good elevation are you meaning it affects jumps? It would be interesting if there was an actual reason for it having an effect on something, such as jumps, rather than it just being an aesthetic thing.
  18. Could you explain a bit more what they meant, as I am having trouble visualising exactly what 'thigh to leg ratio' is? Does it mean the thigh is too long proportionately for the lower part of the leg??
  19. I thought the teachers seemed very caring, and I would say having just done finals for lower school here in the UK, this is the general standard of my dd and her peers who were all auditioning. I would be interested to hear more from you ballet coach about 'what's happening after entry...Especially those very important first 5 years of training.' This to me seems the crux of an interesting discussion about training in this country, but not perhaps for this thread! Maybe you could start a new one? Thank you for posting though, having just done the rounds of final auditions I thought two things after watching this film, specifically - a) the painful waiting period was removed, although of course it was painful for them to find out on the day, and the feedback given to Olga was so detailed and precise that I was impressed as again it seemed to be a sign of the caring attitude taken.
  20. But her dancing is sublime!
  21. Darcey bussell - long torso proportionate to legs. Another big no it seems according to current fashions in Lower school and associates Tamara rojo- petite and not endowed with long willowy limbs.
  22. I agree atacrossroads. Royal have a physical aesthetic that is desirable for them - tho whether it is necessary for classical dancing is debatable, as far as I am aware it is not a physical necessity for sway backs or long limbs in classical ballet but an aesthetic preference, which is different.
  23. Sounds odd? I thought you would always be offered an MDS if your income didn't preclude it at Elmhurst??
  24. Overseas student? Or income level made it too expensive even with the MDS? What does this mean for you on the reserve list?
