  1. I may be being naive but do the audition panel study any information given on the application form regarding funding, they look at the raw talent in front of them on the day and make their offers. They leave the sorting out of finances to the financial director and bursar.
  2. GP visit to confirm diagnosis and referral to physio for exercises to build strength in leg muscles during growth.
  3. If they prefer shorts I think he should wear shorts. They like to see the bare legs of the younger candidates, boys and girls.
  4. Midwifelin the cost aspect is difficult. $8000 is around £4000 which is eye wateringly expensive for a summer school. But then on balance how many of you will be coming? Will the rest of the family stay in UK and have a holiday? My dd is currently looking at summer schools in Europe that for a fortnight would cost around £2000 for just her without flights. My dd did WL summer school 8 years ago. It was her first experience of being away from home and a ballet summer school. She enjoyed the experience, made some friends and decided she wanted to go to vocational school. It is difficult to say what price I would have put on the experience but as things were very tight at the time the £500 it cost seemed a lot then.
  5. Is she old enough for Laines? No personal experience but dd has friends who have attended and really enjoyed. Both now there as full time students.
  6. Elmhurst pupils and parents now have a pre appraisal meeting with the AD and their teacher. At the meeting, before October half term, the children are given advice about what needs working on before the appraisal in February. I understand if it isn't something that can be addressed then the family is made aware how the land lies. I know that when my dd year went through this process those that were no longer suitable for Elmhurst training where advised where to think about auditioning.
  7. Under government guidelines everybody that has contact with children or vulnerable adults has to be vetted. So whether they are a 'highly respected ex dancer' that the other staff feel they know well or the cleaner that applies for a job they have to have a current DBS in place before they can start in post.
  8. Danceworks now have a list of classes on their website where the teacher is happy to accept under 16s in the class but as others have said they are for older dancers. Bet they got fed up with us lot phoning and asking!
  9. By under 16 classes do you mean the classes listed on website that will accept children? I can't see any classes listed specifically for children that are drop in.
  10. Firstly I would leave the girl with the bullying issues and her mum out of this. They have enough problems and the counsellor will be working with her on a programme, you don't want to mess around with that. I would urge you to contact the NSPCC or child protection ASAP. I have spoken to NSPCC when I was concerned about something at dd school, they were helpful and offered to intervene if I didn't feel I could escalate my concerns. I just wanted clarification about the law before speaking to the principal. As you know this behaviour is going on, both the emotional and physical abuse, my feeling is by knowing and not escalating to the appropriate authorities you are putting others at risk and will feel awful if the 'smack' becomes more and lasting physical damage occurs. Lasting psychological damage may already of occurred to a number of these children. NSPCC is a free phone number and your call can be in confidence. Please don't let this behaviour continue. Child protection is all of our responsibility and not just that of our own off spring.
  11. I wouldn't discuss this with the other parents at the moment. I would however be tempted to discuss this with the child protection officer locally or the NSPCC for advice and not take my child back for any classes. If we heard a teacher in a school was doing this we would be up in arms. Just because she is a dance teacher does not make it ok.
  12. Anyone had any experience of the Victoria Marr Sleek Technique DVD? Would they be any use for an US vocational student or are they too basic?
  13. Yes we do that if desperate to watch something but can easily take 18 hours to download a one hour programme and means Internet becomes unusable for anyone else in the house, so really not worth the effort! One day in the far distant future we may get the promised broadband. In the meantime will carry on making use of cinemas that have ballet broadcasts.
  14. Same here Alison and if everyone watches via YouTube cinemas will be even more reluctant to show ballet broadcasts. For some, my dd included, these are social and educational opportunities. Can't imagine her whole school year plus teaching staff crowded around a computer or TV.
  15. I intregued by what these shoes are? Do they have a name Hfbrew? I'm assuming they have a much stiffer sole than a normal soled ballet slipper.
  16. If by chance they were out of the wardrobe at school then they probably were Freed. The pointe shoes that come from the same source are not finished internally to the same standard as those to purchase and look especially tatty and uncomfortable. They do however have the name of who they were made for on the sole, did these shoes as it would help to identify what they are? Is it worth a phone call to the Freed shop to enquire about them?
  17. Trog have you tried filming yourself doing turns and then studying it? We did this a few years ago when dd was frustrated with lack of progress. She was slow to bring her arms in so was losing momentum. She was able to look at film scientifically rather than artistically to correct herself.
  18. We had renewal notice for Dancing Times subscription last month. Hadn't got around to dealing with it and having received issue yesterday I'm glad I didn't. Will also look into Dance Europe.
  19. My dd and ds have been given these exercises at various times by podiatrists, NHS physio and then in dd case a dance physio and teachers. Ds was given a simple variety of them about 17 years ago aged 3 to help him weight bear to learn to walk. Since then they have been adapted slightly but are the same core exercises. They are also in a book dd has, I'm not at home so can't check title at mo. A good podiatrist and physio should start assessing you as you walk in from the waiting room to the treatment room. For jumps a physio will probably want to see him jump until he tires to see how the mechanics change of him launching and landing. Having seen the podiatrist associated with a ballet company for a number of years we hit a crisis in the summer holidays and had to book an appointment locally, dd was very anxious about it and expecting him to recoile in horror and give her a lecture about pointe. Instead, by luck, we found a gem of a podiatrist who had worked with dancers abroad, was full of useful advice and she would happily go back to again. We were lucky but is it worth contacting the podiatry register and enquiring if anyone has listed an interest in dance that is within easy reach?
  20. Time Out offer today - amphitheatre £22 and orchestra stalls £37.50. Sorry I can't do links from my phone.

    Cat-alogue

One of mine had the majority of her teeth removed a number of years ago due to poor dental health. She sucks up food even crunchies and always finishes before her mates who have to crunch, chew and swallow. She is the most prolific hunter but we always manage to extract her prey unharmed, albeit slightly soggy and release into long grass or hedge. Always think it is sad when dragonflys get caught by the cats. They spend such a short part of their life cycle as dragonflys in all their glory but they make such a noise with wings it just attracts their attention., We used to have a cat that wasn't quite the full ticket who brought home very decayed corpses of birds and rodents, only passable if they were already mummified and no longer smelt. Her favourite hiding place was under our bed. We soon got rid of the cat flap. Her brother's favourite catch was camellia leaves. Not harmful to the local wildlife but not great for neighbourly relationships as he systematically stripped their bushes, hiding the leaves in shoes, under cushions. He reacted to it like it was catnip. Apart from the immediate elderly neighbour who he adopted whilst I was at work think the rest put out the flags when we left.

    Cat-alogue

In the summer I watched one of my cats creep sideways around the garden fence all bushed up whilst his partner in crime was interested in something by the wheelie bins. It was a metre long grass snake! One showed natural instincts and moved away, the other who is fairly dense was trying to pat it. Luckily for him it was not an adder. The cat who crept away has also encountered cucumbers, hoses and hula hoops and not trusted them either.
