  1. Alison, one of the two men - the one with the longer, dark shaggy hair - is Roman Mejia, one of NYCB’s great new sensations! The other is Lex Ishimoto...new name for me...a freelancer in a variety of dance forms...from California.
  2. I realize that there are many COVID-era shortened Nutcrackers and other family-friendly films out there. I’ll just share one from The Washington Ballet that features an especially wondrous, traditional Sugar Plum Fairy solo by their leading ballerina Katherine Barkman (at the 24-minute mark)...and doesn’t she have a bit of a “Fonteyn Vibe” to her look? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PU7FX3NjIuo
  3. We now have an initial airing date for the highly-anticipated PBS (US television) “American Masters: Twyla Tharp” documentary-film: 26 March 2021 at 9:00PM est...which I’ve added to our Community Calendar. Hopefully it might also eventually stream worldwide, as do many PBS shows. https://www.pbs.org/about/about-pbs/blogs/news/pbs-programming-guide-winter-2021-january-march/ (scroll way down for Twyla...2/3 of the way)
  4. Sorry for an off-topic (but related) pause: I can’t help but beam with joy as I have my morning coffee in front of the TV now, in which the roll-out of the COVID vaccine in the UK is featured. Wow, those are my UK ballet friends! 🥳
  5. In the midst of the show, someone mentioned that it would remain online until 5 January, I believe. The new Osipova/Kittleberger duet to Sibelius was quite touching but I most loved the “Fields of Gold” duet that was introduced by Sting...Nafisah Baba & Lukas McFarlane dancing. There were a couple of funny moments, such as William Forsythe catching snowflakes in a bucket or Sylvie Guillem picking olives, high up in a tree on her farm.
  6. Bumping this up, as a reminder. The free stream begins in about 90 minutes. YouTube “page” is up on my big screen now. https://www.sadl.rs/GlobalGala https://www.youtube.com/c/sadlerswells/videos?disable_polymer=true&itct=CBAQ8JMBGAEiEwj1pOnftbftAhWZ7sEKHZ5kDGw%3D
  7. I loved his initial RB version in 1985...thank goodness that we still have that DVD with Collier/Dowell! I loved the pale tone of the diverts...a real unity of design. I loved the purity of the RJWiley Stepanov-note reconstructed passages. That remains my gold standard production of Nut, anywhere on earth...but it no longer exists. (I love how Berlin incorporates the original Imperial designs...but the steps are NOT the 1892 ones.) I also love SPW’s 1990s version for the BRB. It was more modern & painterly design...and the interjection of Clara in the diverts makes sense, as this was no attempt to recreate the Imperial Mariinsky version. Then things got muddled... My problem came around 2000 when SPW “mucked up” the Snow Scene and all of A2 with over-participation of Clara & the Nephew...AND the gorgeous A2 “White Kingdom” design was darkened, with too much color and trees in the background. Darker colors on the costumes...no Major Domo...no pulling of Sugar Plum Fairy across the stage on a piece of silk. It’s almost as if SPW chose to remove &replace the bits that were researched by RJWiley. Don't get me wrong. I still love the RB production, especially A1’s rich details. Also, I love seeing new dancers in the leading roles.
  8. Alison, I just made my first entry into Community Calendar - Dec 6 3pm eastern US - Washington Ballet’s 40-minute free “Nutcracker Tea Party.” I’ll do it for one-time simple free events such as this. Too complex if it involves fees with multiple options, sorry!
  9. Thanks, Ivy! Another Balanchine, I see. With option to attend tea parties via Zoom. So creative.
  10. Thanks, Naomi M. That’s what I thought...not the complete work. Almost all US ballet troupes offering digital Nutcrackers are offering only condensed versions (“A Nutcracker Experience”). They’re not giving away the whole candy shop, so to speak, whether for free or for a fee. It’s their most treasured commodity, after all. It’s a rarity for a US troupe to offer an entire digital Nutcracker. I know only of two, both with the Balanchine: Pacific NW Ballet and NYCB. I’ve opted for Pacific NW to see the newer designs.
  11. Thanks for this. I see that the opening date for Digital Program 3 has shifted from Dec 18 to Jan 1...and Darrell’s Othello replaces Nutcracker pdd, which is ok in my book.
  12. Lovely Insight to two Nutcracker pdds! Enjoyed all of the participants but have really taken to Leo Dixon...now on my radar. 😉
  13. Ok. Thanks, Ian. It’s not about being a prude. I can handle any topic if tastefully presented. This one is just so crude and demeaning to women (or to all). It must be mentioned that the same ballet has moments of beauty within other segments, particularly one pdd to Rachmaninoff’s Elegie. A year or so after the NY premiere, the ballet was scheduled to be presented in ABT’s annual tour to the Kennedy Center. A photo of Copeland & Whiteside in the “groping pdd” - of an inoffensive moment - was on the brochure to publicize the run. The ballet was ultimately canceled for the Kennedy Center and replaced with Robbins’ Other Dances. A wise decision.
  14. Wait - wait - wait...stop the presses! I can’t believe what I’m reading. Liam Scarlett’s With a Chance of Rain is being performed and livestreamed on 20 December? The full thing? If so, it will include a horrendously vulgar Pas de Deux with moves termed “The Grope” (with jiggling) and “The Twerk” that disgusted many of us in the ABT audience. If that particular pdd will be omitted or significantly modified at the Staatsoper, then fine. If not, please alert viewers to keep the children far away. For reference, here’s a review of its ABT premiere in 2014: https://criticaldance.org/american-ballet-theatre-with-a-chance-of-rain/
  15. I’m wondering which Principals we may be seeing during today’s Insight livestream? On my schedule! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-LOxxTLxNU
  16. Of course, Alison. I get it but it’s such a special delight to watch in real time (spoken by a figure skating “nut” who woke up at her 1AM two nights ago to watch a Grand Prix event in Osaka, Japan, even if the full competition was available to view during normal hours)!
  17. Only one US company has done this so far, that I’m aware - Tulsa Ballet. I like the idea of committing to a set date & time...just like the old days. I even dressed up! Thanks for the info. I may be spending 12 December in (Virtual Live) Amsterdam.
  18. p.s. Our generous Danish friends have even provided us with the souvenir programme, replete with gorgeous photos. https://issuu.com/kglteater/docs/sylfiden_program_?fr=sOWVkMzkwNDM4Mg
  19. I watched without problems. The very short review: Totally Love It!!! 💗 Specifically, love: - the designs; even though un-traditional, beautiful! Late-1800s Glasgow-Charles Macintosh style grand hall for A1 and a pink cotton-candy forest for A2! (Sylphide tutus with perhaps too much fabric, but pretty.) - the tweaks in the scenario, particularly making Madge (Matiakis, outstanding) a youngish hag, perhaps a poor village beauty once pursued by arrogant rich James? - dancing- not perfect but acceptable Bournonville style...Praetorius (Sylphide) has really improved, with her sweet femininity & floaty port de bras...Frasson (James) and Buza (Gurn) unleashing their potential! Corps well synchronized and full of gusto. - orchestra -powerful, under conductor David Levi. - and, last but not least - at the end, a true Copenhagen opening night tradition: the bows first to the Royal Loge (assume the Queen in attendance?), then to the audience. Sigh...bringing back memories of my own times at the Royal Theatre on Kongens Nytorv... Bournonville Fest and such. What a way to kick off the holidays! Thank you, Denmark! 🇩🇰
  20. I’ve asked Boston Ballet for a rundown of complete ballets in all shows of the 20/21 digital season, not just this initial Forsythe. Zero answers. Read the a literature; not a single full ballet is promised.
  21. Thanks, Jane. I didn’t want to assume that because it came from Ida Praetorius’ FB that it would she...she is modest. So it looks like it may be Kizzy Mattiakis as Madge. The RDB Extra platform: https://kglteater.dk/xtra/forestillinger/forestillinger-sylfiden/ Wed, 25 November, 2020 @ 8pm UTC +01
  22. From Ida Praetorius’ Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/events/3702134356486177?acontext={"source"%3A"3"%2C"action_history"%3A"null"}&aref=3 she also links to this short preview on the Royal Theatre’s own FB site: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10157414713031455&id=22694021454 This Wednesday, 25 Nov at 8PM UTC+1 If live, it will be the Wilma Giglio/Andreas Kaas cast.
  23. Rep 2 - Balanchine excerpts were a disappointment. Other than the brief part of Four Ts, these were mostly “Balanchine lightweight” pieces, weakly performed (poor musicality, emphasis, watered down steps)...the two younger women in the solo variations from Who Cares? Suite being particularly wrong. I realize that it’s tough to coach via Zoom but...what the ???? Other than Four Ts, the dancers never quite let loose. It felt as if they were overly careful, tiptoeing through tulips. Kate Honea In Tarantella was an exception; bravo to her! There also seemed to be a slight mismatch (film synchronicity issue?) between the dancing and music...or maybe it was just the inexperience of some dancers.
  24. Thanks, TB. And that is precisely why I didn’t fork out $$$ for Boston. Ever since they announced their digital season without details on exact programming, I’ve been emailing them and have received no answers. No details - no money. Buyer beware...unless one is a longtime fan of the company & simply wishes to make a donation. I’m not in that economic category.
