  1. Update: There is now a Youtube option for watching the Joffrey’s Bolero tonight, although I can’t tell if it will remain up after the initial airing. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDaTgOkW-SJShYCqHR7jsKA
  2. Wonderful insight, Jan. Well...now you’ll be prepared to either have some strong caffein after dinner, to stay up late, OR set your alarm for 12:45pm. The above link also takes one to a nice film of the process process of creating Bolero.
  3. On a more positive note from the USA... Ballet West continues its Friday evenings of free streams tonight at 6pm est (11pm UK) with Garrett Smith’s classical Facades, to baroque music - viewable for an entire week via its YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh9GSKCxKmaY49wgZxOp1Dg From the look of snippets seen elsewhere on Youtube, this is a tutu-and-pointes ballet...bright red tutus, to be exact. Whee! 🎉 Sneak peak from the choreographer’s own Youtube site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNLXkhgP0L8
  4. Reminder that the Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet’s first stream - Ravel’s Bolero to Y. Arai’s choreography, with 15 dancers - is tonight at 8pm est(1am UK). Unfortunately, it’s only one chance, only from the Joffrey website or Facebook (no Youtube or Vimeo)...surely one of the most draconian approaches from any ballet troupe to get its work seen during COVID?! Not even a paid option after the initial free airing (as Munich does). So if Britons and Europeans wish to stay awake into the early morning, here goes: https://joffrey.org/season-and-tickets/performances/bolero/
  5. re. Sandpaper Ballet - only Houston & Atlanta in the US + Dutch National Ballet elsewhere, that I’m aware. This is a ballet that deserves much wider distribution. It takes a large cast (25 or so) and the ensemble portions “in the grid” seem really tough...they demand razor sharp timing and synchronization. It reminds me of the opening of Balanchine’s Serenade with the dancers on the grid...only loonier and faster, constantly shifting positions. I’ve had the greatest fun rewatching the “grid” sections over and over. Two days left on my streaming access!
  6. Here’s one that I wholeheartedly recommend. DO NOT MISS Mark Morris’ Sandpaper Ballet, to Leroy Anderson’s “light classical-pop” tunes (The Typewriter, Syncopated Clock, Fiddle-Faddle). It closes San Fco Ballet’s Digital Program 2 and will infuse any viewer with everlasting JOY! The first two works are fine but -wow! - this one is extraordinary. It joins my pantheon of the very best ballets...and I cannot wait to see it performed live post-COVID, somewhere... anywhere! Pricey ($29 for 72-hrs) but worth every penny, IMO. Details on how to purchase, viewing period, etc., here: https://www.sfballet.org/productions/digital-program-02/ Like many of you, I’ve watched so much streamed dance during this COVID period that I’ve become numb and rarely report, as in the past. This is a big exception...could not wait to shout it out.
  7. If it’s going to be a “big one,” I’ll guess Sleeping Beauty, for the historical significance...end of WWII...end of another major crisis...Lilac Fairy triumphs over Evil...still the Royal Ballet’s calling card to the world. Before that happens, I’m betting on shorter, smaller-scaled ballets.
  8. That’s too bad but understandable in these times. Luckily, the troupe just made a 48-minute sampler of its recent virtual gala available to view for one week via YouTube. This includes a pdd from Mrs. Robinson that Cathy Marston and the dancers were able to create. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjejgK61gjs&utm_source=ActiveCampaign&utm_medium=email&utm_content=We+re+sharing+something+extra+special+with+you&utm_campaign=21+E-news+0219
  9. Stunningly produced & so touching. It made me think, “It’s been almost one year of this emptiness.” 😔 Let’s not give up hope.
  10. As always, great line-up of Stars at the festival. I hope that it comes to pass. I must have blinked and missed Marcelo Gomes’ move to Dresden, as both principal dancer and ballet master. Congratulations to him!
  11. Oh, this is a STUNNING work of art, on all levels! It’s no wonder that Spuck was awarded the 2019 Benois de la Danse for his creation. This was just filmed two nights ago... with dancers and staff donning their masks after the bows (to the empty auditorium). Big thanks to Naomi M for alerting us to this. 💐
  12. Balanchine’s Liebeslieder Walzer. Never gets old. ❤️ 💕 💗
  13. Reminder of two absolutely divine abstract ballets streaming FREE as of yesterday, for short times. BalletMet - ART OF WAR (Liang/Torke). 15 mins. Only through tomorrow via the company’s website (not Youtube): https://www.balletmet.org/virtual-performances/ BalletWest - DANCES FOR LOU (Caniparoli/Harrison) 32 mins. Via YouTube, for one week: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh9GSKCxKmaY49wgZxOp1Dg Enjoy! I know you will...
  14. I seriously covet this particular SB starring Fumi Kaneko! It must become a DVD/Blu-Ray release.
  15. My DVD is of a 1993 performance, released in 1996. An oldie goldie! I’m hoping that David Hallberg’s new position as AD may spur more international interest in the troupe, with more DVD releases on an international scale.
  16. Great! Maria K leads the final movement of Vienna...a grand role that often marks retirements of beloved NYCB ballerinas. (Gulp.) It sounds as if the Stravinsky Violin Concerto on 11 March may be the full version of the performance from which we saw the 4th (Final) movement last September. Same cast of Hyltin, LaCour, Mearns, Stanley.
  17. https://balletwest.org/news/winter-streaming-the-best-of-ballet-west The first one, Joos’ Green Table, was still up on YouTube a minute ago...so catch it while you can, before Emeralds appears this evening.
  18. More free streaming of complete ballets coming from the US: BalletMet (Columbus, Ohio): Edwaard Liang’s Art of War to Michael Torke’s score. Streams for 72 hrs as of 12 Feb: https://www.balletmet.org/virtual-performances/ Also, as I just mentioned in Bruce’s new thread about NYCB’s season... Ballet West (Salt Lake City, UT) is in the midst of its own six-week digital season. One new complete ballet each Friday. Up tonight, remaining for one week: Balanchine’s Emeralds. Free, via YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh9GSKCxKmaY49wgZxOp1Dg Subsequent weeks will include Rubies, Diamonds, and more.
  19. In sum...three complete, substantive ballets (Prodigal, T&V and Stravinsky Violin). Thanks, NYCB! Better than the last digital season. Looking forward to casting. in the meantime, Ballet West presents Balanchine’s Emeralds for a week, beginning tonight...part of its ongoing season of complete ballets...Rubies & Diamonds coming later this month. All Free via its YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh9GSKCxKmaY49wgZxOp1Dg Info on the “Best of Ballet West” season: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=852944238608013&id=61776217880
  20. For sheer enthusiasm, nothing beats the Defiles at the Cuban National Ballet, usually performed at the start of the biennial Havana Intl Ballet Festivals...at least they were until the passing of Alicia Alonso...who appearances at the end of each Defile drove audiences into a frenzy! However, I recall audiences beginning to stand and stomp well before Alonso’s appearances. They’d crank up the volume as soloists took to the stage. Due to COVID, the 2020 edition was cancelled...but we can begin to count down to Oct/Nov 2022.
  21. Thanks for this, Stevie. Indeed, it was Nostalgia Borincana last week...and it’s great that they’ve kept that online beyond 24 hrs. PR has had a number of larger-scaled professional companies throughout the years, such as Ballet Concierto de PR, but it’s interesting that it’s the first one that has lasted...modest but alive...”the little company that could”!
  22. Exciting streaming announcement from my native island 🌴 of Puerrrto Rrrrrico! Ballets de San Juan - the first ballet troupe that I saw live, in 1962 - has been streaming works that premiered during their most recent shows (Dec 2020) at Centro de Bellas Artes. Up next: Amores (Loves), by esteemed local choreographer Ramon Molina, to the music of Cuba’s Ernesto Lecuona. Among the dancers are guest artists Nayara Lopes (first soloist of Pennsylvania Ballet - a personal fave of mine!) and Telmo Moreiro (principal of Orlando Ballet and Prix Lausanne winner). Link to BSJ’s Youtube page, which goes up this Thursday, 4 February, at 8pm EST (1am Friday in UK)...but it will be up for 24 hours...so catch it while you can...for FREE! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb4eY3OCDB0
  23. I just received a note from the US Amazon site that my pre-ordered DVD ships on 5 February...this Friday. Yay! I thoroughly enjoyed The Cellist during the free stream last summer and cannot wait to see Dances at a Gathering.
