  1. Webb’s little intros didn’t bother me because it was a program of diverts and extracts. The only thing that I may have done differently would’ve been to vary the speakers, eg, Barbieri, Volpe or one of the senior dancers, such as Kate Honea...perhaps filmed against different backdrops in Sarasota. Nobody was trying to pretend that this was a live show, filmed on the same day.
  2. Just watched this fabulous programme. It was a special treat to see the Romeo & Juliet Balcony pdd, delicately performed by Ellen Overstreet and Ricardo Graziano. Ashton’s R&J was the first programme that the troupe had to cancel/postpone after the pandemic hit...and the first of my spring 2020 trips to be canceled. 😢 Meditation from Thais - passionately danced by Katelyn May and Ricardo Rhodes - was another highlight but, to me, they are all special. Oh - and the excerpts from Facade, so adorable! The hilarious Tango ending (Ivan Spitale & Marijana Dominis) brings special joy when one realizes that the original egomaniatical Dago was Ashton himself! And a “shout out” to the high-flying Yuki Nonaka as the Blue Boy solo skater in the excerpts from Les Patineurs. I hope to catch the hour of extras, including Dowell’s coaching sessions via Zoom, during the weekend, before the links expire.
  3. Thanks, Don Q fan. It was a real treat! I remember the final “laser lights” solo (Wave) from one of Bolle’s recent New Year TV specials...surely a signature piece for him? Glad that the concert included a good balance of pure-classical and modern ballet.
  4. Agree with almost all that you’ve reported, Bruce, except perhaps less enthusiasm for Tiler Peck in the excerpt of Mercurial Maneuvers, as my memories invoke the ravishing Jenifer Ringer in the work (with Ringer & Jock Soto leading the May 2002 PBS telecast of the complete ballet...or Miranda Weese at the premiere!). Also... I felt like screaming “Get the videographer of BalletMet here, immediately!” at some of the editing/zooming choices tonight...such as the far-shot filming of most of the Year of the Rabbit pdd...or the zooming & angular choices during the last excerpt, of the finale of Everywhere We Go. So many key moments got lost in the big picture.
  5. Premiering tonight: 21st Century Voices. Direct link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HKO1FfGLAAw
  6. The big premiere of Hubbe’s newest (3rd?) La Sylphide will be this Saturday! Has precise casting been announced? (The website indicates dancers of three potential casts.) Is a telecast or streaming being planned? Thanks for any & all insights.
  7. I know that BRB’s new triple bill featuring Will Tuckett’s Lazuli Sky opens this week and will be filmed for future streaming. Any word yet on when it will be aired? Apologies, if it’s already been noted elsewhere in this forum. This is exciting! 🥳
  8. You’re welcome, Jan. You see why I was gobsmacked as I watched? This is a very complex ballet, with interesting clusters making patterns throughout the 14 minutes. Very tough ballet to film adequately. The videography team really did its homework ahead of time. Even the placement of a camera behind stall/orchestra seats to capture the standing ovation of the wildly cheering audience...just right. The moment when the guys, one by one, prance over the others who are down parallel on the floor...or when the dancers are holding hands and slowly “fanning out” as the lead guy performs a solo...then all is repeated in the opposite direction...wow! I’ve already rewatched four times. I need to know the videography team!!!
  9. If you add up the rest of the truly moderns - not the two balletic moderns, One Body and Red Angels - it was way more than 20% - more like 50%. Not just all of the second half of the show except for the 4-minute finale of Red Angels at the very end, but also, in the first half, the two excerpts from FOIL: the three women with naked backs, facing backstage and moving arms...and the solo by the woman surrounded by corps members carrying a lit coronavirus cluster in each hand (or so it appeared). Like you, I was happy to finally see the words “Swan Lake” flash across the screen. The 15-minute dopey MOPEY was just the worst of them. However, I appreciate the effort and am thrilled that this company is back on its feet. Hence, the overwhelming feeling at the end of the show was delight...and hope, in the knowledge of what’s being offered in the five other regular-season programs. In sum, my money well spent, in the long run.
  10. Reminder that BalletMet’s stream of Peck’s In Creases just premiered & will remain up for only 3-4 days. DO NOT MISS THIS if you wish to see an example of perfectly-filmed ballet. I’ve seen this ballet live & on film several times, by several companies, but have never truly enjoyed it quite as this. Masterpiece of filming...number of cameras, editing choices, audience reactions, etc. Also very well performed. https://www.balletmet.org/virtual-performances/
  11. PNB’s opening digital program was a delight! I had no problems accessing it...sharp, crisp, clear sight and sound. The dances offered a mix of traditional ballet (bits of Swan Lake, Jewels and Robbins’ DAAG), modern ballet (the late Albert Evans’ One Body - gorgeous male solo by the elegant Christopher D’Ariano) and perhaps too much time devoted to non-balletic modern dance (including a 15-minute solo to a mixture of Bach & ‘80s rock that seemed to never end). Why? - in a 75-minute program, why? Sigh. but... Heck, it was a start & I loved seeing the dancers in their main theatre in downtown Seattle. AND the remaining five programs between now and June 2021 will feature complete classical works, such as Balanchine’s Coppelia and Maillot’s Romeo&Juliet, so I’m a happy camper. Favorite moment for me: The “bracelet solo” from Emeralds, performed by PNB’s quintessential Romantic ballerina Leta Biasucci. She captured that Violette Verdi Spirit perfectly!
  12. Exactly (ha ha)! At the very least I know that I can click on the link and watch on the iPhone!!! As for “shining” the iPhone to the SmartTV, I’ll make sure that the techie in the family is home, LOL! He’s not allowed to go to his Thursday-night ice hockey game tonight! Everything worked out for last week’s ROH Gala, so I’m hopeful for PNB and Sarasota.
  13. Today’s the first day of Pacific NW Ballet’s paid-subscription Virtual season, to which I paid for the full-season option of six programs through May/June 2021. I can’t wait to see how this goes...PNB already sent us a “test film” with instructions on steps to watch on Smart TV, if we so choose. Big ballet night at home! My only other such purchase is for Sarasota Ballet’s season, which begins next week, 23 Oct. with All-Ashton. They, too, sent a “test film” with instructions. Fingers crossed for smooth sailing! 🤞 🙏 😊
  14. The next of the regular NYCB digital fall 2020 programs premieres tonight - mix of Balanchine & Robbins works, incl first mvmt of Brahms-Schoenberg, featuring much-admired corps dancer Emily Kikta, who talks about it (near top of “videos” option): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg1UaFOsQ7BkCWAxNIpE4uQ The link to tonight’s program should appear soon in that same YouTube channel.
  15. Just watched this extraordinary show. Hard to pick a fave segment, although the Fille pdd was stupendous and Elite Syncopations with a full ensemble was truly uplifting. Bravi!!!
  16. Let’s not forget tomorrow’s digital family matinee from NYCB, at 2pm EST, presumably available for a few days (?) after the premiere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6Y3wH8ph1Q Megan Fairchild introduces an all-Balanchine program: Tarantella, Scherzo a la Russe and the 1st mvmt of Western Symphony.
  17. Sad indeed. I’m afraid of what this could mean for NYCB and ABT performances into summer 2021...not to mention each company’s small (one week) tour to the Kennedy Center. This news, coupled with the earlier word about the Metropolitan Opera closure through August 2021, isn’t very promising. Sigh.
  18. Heads up: BalletMet of Columbus, Ohio, USA, will be streaming Peck’s In Creases for three days, beginning 16 Oct. Details: https://www.facebook.com/events/d41d8cd9/in-creases-livestream/387296599329981/
  19. Spuck’s Nutcracker is a total delight! Not only a clever twist in the story but an opportunity to watch the beautiful young ballerina Lou Spichtig (then 15 or 16) in a major role. After winning gold at Varna, at age 16, she moved to Queensland, Australia: https://www.queenslandballet.com.au/company/team/dancers/lou-yaa-spichtig This Nutcracker is a keeper.
  20. A real winner of a program. Three of the ballets were 100% complete - Movements, Chiaroscuro and Red Angels. Totally loved Maria Kowroski in Movements. So nice that NYCB is featuring more of her in this digital season, given that she’ll be retiring next year...hopefully a proper live retirement.
  21. The most natural and frisky Kitri in today’s Mariinsky, Elena Evseyeva, who rarely tours: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Rrp7ZdmTMB4
  22. Summarizing digital seasons that one may purchase for US ballet companies, thus far: Sarasota Ballet’s specific plans were announced a couple of weeks ago, in a separate thread ($90 for the first three shows, through December). Pacific NW Ballet/Seattle plans are cited above ($190 for season pass of six shows...not including Nutcracker, to be sold separately). Louisville Ballet in Kentucky, USA, was one of the first companies to announce & sell season tickets ($125) to an all-digital season (“Season of Illumination”). This was back in July. However, as far as I can tell, exact ballets are not yet listed. The website states that folks who pre-purchased season passes will be notified of exact ballets 3-4 weeks before each program. Link below. https://www.louisvilleballet.org/ It’s now October and, as far as I can tell, no exact ballets have been announced for the Season of Illumination. Will they be illuminating us soon? Have any other US ballet companies announced digital seasons for purchase? ABT will make a couple of archived shows available to donating Members (minimum $100 membership level) but that’s not a digital season per se. Washington Ballet’s offerings are tough to figure out...and cost is hard to tell...we just know that there’ll be a couple of special-created digital programs, a “virtual Nutcracker Experience,” and live performances in May & June (Swan Lake at KennCenter and a “New Steps” triple Bill on a stage). https://www.washingtonballet.org/seasons/2020-21-season/
