Swan Lake Paris Opera Ballet
toursenlair replied to Don Q Fan's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
A former POB dancer told me that sometimes the direction will casually say things to the etoile-to-be like "Are your parents coming to the show tonight by any chance? No? Wouldn't they like to see you dance Swan Lake? Here, we have some extra tickets..." But otherwise no, they don't know. In the case of Mathieu Ganio, who was promoted to Etoile straight from Sujet at the age of 20, apparently Brigitte Lefevre was in the audience sitting next to Dominique Meyer and at the intermission of Don Q she said, essentially, "Whaddya think, should we make him an etoile tonight?" and so they did.- 23 replies

I watched the Mata Hari DVD a couple of weeks ago and loved it. I am pretty sure DNB will be performing it again in 17/18 -
The Classics - contemporary versions
toursenlair replied to Pas de Quatre's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
I think the world would be a poorer place without David Dawson's Giselle and John Neumeier's Swan Lake, though I love the traditional Giselle to bits, and many traditional Swan Lakes too. There is no shortage of traditional versions around; when we let artists be free to have their own vision sometimes we make amazing discoveries. Not everything will be a success but that is true of more traditional versions too. For instance I loathe the Grigorovich Swan Lake that the Bolshoi does. Art involves risk. -

new head for opera house in Vienna: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-austria-culture-idUSKBN14A148?mc_cid=e79f2574d9&mc_eid=c2e02122f6 "Vienna State Opera will be headed by a former pop radio boss and record company executive, Austria's Culture Ministry said on Wednesday, hoping to attract a younger audience to Austria's flagship music venue. Bogdan Roscic, 52, will take up the post in 2020, moving from Sony's classical music unit which he has headed since 2009. Before then he worked at Decca Music Group and an Austrian pop music station, but has never been director of an opera house before." The appointment doesn't take effect until... 2020! I wonder what this will mean for Manuel Legris and the Staatsballett. -

The National Ballet of Canada teamed up with the Toronto Transit Commission (our bus/subway/streetcar company) with the slogan "we move you".. Pity the music is annoying. There are also posters in the subway trains and buses etc.- 168 replies

Spartacus in Munich - casting. Help please!
toursenlair replied to simonbfisher's topic in Ballet / Dance news & information
I have attended a performance of Manon on Christmas Day in Munich and one of Romeo and Juliet in Stuttgart! So refreshing for those of us who are used to the Nutcracker stranglehold. -
those of you who go to BRB, be grateful you don't live in Toronto, where best seats for Nutcracker are the equivalent of 100 pounds (vs 66 pounds in B'ham, and I see you can go on a less popular day and get a seat for 47 pounds). Worst seats in Toronto are 50 pounds! And it's even more expensive for the regular, non-Nut performances. Best seats are, wait for it, 156 pounds.

I'd sign up for Russian lessons with him! -
If I were to take a train from London to Nottingham to see BRB for a Wednesday 230 pm matinee, can anyone give me an idea how much I should rely (or not) on the train timetables? I would plan to have lunch at the Theatre Royal before the performance. I would be accompanying a group of up to 25 people, and that always means allowing more time than if I were going by myself. For instance, there's a train that leaves St Pancras at 1015 and is supposed to get into Nottingham at 1155. Should I believe that? Or should I take an earlier train?

thanks, Janet. I may try Cafe Pistou myself, but I have found it is too easy to lose people on 10 minute strolls! It does look awfully nice, though, and I would never have found it by myself. Do you think it's big enough to handle a group of 25?

Has anyone had the "pre-theatre supper on the mezzanine level" at Sadlers Wells? any thoughts? I know there is also a Jaimie's Italian very nearby but I like to keep my groups actually in the theatre if I can.

The artistic directors of each company choose a male and female dancer from their company. They have to be under 23 years of age. The companies participating change each year, although that was not the original intention, which was to have dancers representing the companies with which Erik Bruhn was associated: Royal Danish, Royal, ABT, and NBOC. But sometimes a company can't spare any dancers at the time of the competition. We have had several competitions without any Royal Ballet dancers, but this the first time we have no Danes. Hamburg and San Francisco have both participated before. Stuttgart has been at least once. Last year we had dancers from Boston for the first time. I don't know how the NBOC (which runs the competition) decides how many companies to invite in a given year.
