  1. National Ballet of Canada Corps de Ballet members Félix Paquet (22) and Calley Skalnik (21) will represent the company at The Twelfth International Competition for The Erik Bruhn Prize on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 7:30 pm at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. 2. If It's Jan 15 and coming from La Scala it will be Romeo and Juliet, not Coppelia. It was supposed to be a new version of Coppelia by Mauro Bigonzetti, but when he quit as AD last month they replaced Coppelia with R&J.
  3. Ted Brandsen's Mata Hari was by all accounts a huge success in Amsterdam and I believe Demis Volpi's Krabat did well in Stuttgart, as did Christian Spuck's Leonce et Lena.
  4. I meant the casting for our Onegin. This is the problem if you want to see Svetlana in both!
  5. Yes Bright Stream is a repeat, but I missed it the last time. In its wisdom our Canadian cineplex chain shifted it from early November to late November.... so that it conflicts with the National Ballet of Canada season. Not only that, it may conflict with Svetlana Lunkina's Onegin on that very day, so Svetlana's fans will be torn. Waiting on tenterhooks for the casting to be announced.
  6. The piano concerto bits were Grigorovich's addition when he restaged the ballet. I sympathize with your need for cake, alison. I watched the whole ballet on YouTube a couple of weeks ago and loathed it, just about all of it. But in any case I was in New York watching New York City Ballet yesterday so not at all sorry to miss the Bolshoi broadcast. I am looking forward to Bright Stream though.
  7. http://milano.repubblica.it/cronaca/2016/10/08/news/scala_mauro_bigonzetti_rinuncia_alla_direzione_del_corpo_di_ballo_mal_di_schiena_-149360217/ according to the theatre, it is because severe back problems prevent him from any effort. The Managing Director of La Scala, Alexander Pereira, has appointed Fréderic Olivieri, currently head of the theatre’s dance academy, to fill the post until February of next year. A replacement choreographer for Bigonzetti's new Coppelia will be announced shortly.
  8. could we please keep this thread on the topic of Upcoming DVD/BluRay releases.
  9. The visual Dictionary of Ballet for Children is a different video from the Video Dictionary of Classical Ballet, which is two DVDs and covers more steps.
  10. Contributors and Moderators, can we please keep this thread about ballet in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
  11. what performances are you going to see? Often they close off the 4th ring altogether. The sightlines are good pretty much anywhere on the main floor. I haven't sat higher up than that.
  12. First of all, you don't know how many people replied "NO of course not, are you crazy?", because those people aren't shown in the video. I would say it is clear that the ones who are don't know what the word "suffrage" means, and that therefore, they not illogically associate it with "suffering". It doesn't help that the interviewer intentionally pronounces it "suffer - idge" rather than the correct "suff ridge" and deliberately uses terms like "stamp out". I suspect that they may well know about the fight for women's right to vote but that their high school history textbooks used the more transparent term "right to vote" or "voting rights" rather than the opaque "suffrage". Anyone in favour of plain language would do the same. Outside of textbooks, "suffrage" is just not used very much as part of the general language so where would they encounter it? Yes, maybe it should be part of everyone's vocabulary, but you could say that of many many words. Historically, when you have two very similar sounding words that have very different meanings, usually one will fall out of the language altogether and be replaced by something else.
  13. I'm organizing a trip to Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale next March to see Sarasota's Two Pigeons and Scenes de Ballet program plus Miami's mixed program. You can see the itinerary here: http://toursenlair.blogspot.ca/2016/09/ballet-and-art-in-florida-in-march.html Price forthcoming soon, but get in touch if you think you might be interested.
  14. the vet gave me a tip. take a pillowcase and use it to "bag" your cat while he is sitting on the sofa or somewhere. grasp the open end of the pillowcase so he can't get out. Put cat, in pillowcase, into carrier. Close carrier. He will worm his way out of the pillowcase pretty quickly. Works a treat with my Minkus.
  15. The Broadway production also had quite a few "authentic" ballet dancers in the corps. From Miami City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, if I recall correctly.

  17. this description is from amazon.ca but I expect it is also available on amazon.co.uk. I read this author's book about 5 ballerinas and found it very interesting and very readable. The book is expensive but maybe worth investigating at your library. Albion's Dance: British Ballet during the Second World War Hardcover – Oct 17 2016 by Karen Eliot When the Second World War broke out, ballet in Britain was only a few decades old. Few had imagined that it would establish roots in a nation long thought to be unresponsive to dance. Nevertheless, the war proved to be a boon for ballet dancers, choreographers and audiences, for the nation's dancers were forced to look inward to their own identity and sources of creativity. As author Karen Eliot demonstrates in this fascinating book, instead of withering during the enforced isolation of war, ballet in Britain flourished, exhibiting a surprising heterogeneity and vibrant populism that moved ballet outside its typical elitist surroundings to be seen by uninitiated, often enthusiastic audiences. Ballet was thought to help boost audience morale, to render solace to the soul-weary and to afford entertainment and diversion to those who simply craved a few hours of distraction. Government authorities came to see that ballet could serve as a tool of propaganda; the ways it functioned within the larger public discourse of propaganda and sacrifice, and how it answered a public mood of pragmatism and idealism, are also topics in this story of the development of a national ballet identity. This narrative has several key players - dance critics, male and female dancers, producers, audiences, and choreographers. Exploring the so-called "ballet boom" during WWII, the larger story of this book is one of how art and artists thrive during conflict, and how they respond
