  1. Some friends who have never been to the ROH before would like to see Turandot this summer and have asked me for advice - I can't really help them as it's a long time since I was a regular opera-goer. Is there an obvious choice between the two casts? (Goerke/Antonenko and Lindstrom/Alagna) And how hot a ticket is it likely to be? - i.e completely sold out 10 mins after the booking opens, or possibly tickets still available a day or two later? And finally, is there anywhere that gives the price range of tickets? Thanks in advance for any help.
  2. There's one more Garland Dance too, as Wheeldon completely rewrote his version for a revival of Mason's production - can't remember when but it was some years ago.
  3. Thanks to DanceTabs for picking this little line out of a new Twyla Tharp interview "As for whether there is anything left for her to do, it appears there will be much more to come — and not just the full-length, five-movement Hadyn symphony she will choreograph for the Royal Ballet later this year." 22 years since Mr Worldly Wise!
  4. An interview, in English, done last month at the Daiwa Foundation in London - it's about half an hour.
  5. Also, the Sunday Times News section today has a photograph of the Romanian dancer Diana Georgia Ionescu, who won a scholarship at the Prix de Lausanne yesterday.
  6. ABT's company class was streamed live today and it's stilll online at http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/video/iconic-ballet-company-motion-45067278
  7. I don't think there was a production between the 1946 version and Peter Wright's in 1968, was there? They tweaked the 1946 one a bit over the years but the Wright was the first completely new one.
  8. http://www.for-ballet-lovers-only.com/Beauty1.html Sebastian, you might be interested in Doug Fullington's very long piece about the reconstruction of Sleeping Beauty for the Mariinsky Ballet - there are lots of historical details there. Also, the US-based forum Balletalert has a long thread about the ballet, 58 topics ranging from history to trivia. It's in the section Ballets and Choreographers.
  9. There's a complete streamed performance of Kenneth Greve's ballet online on the company's site The company is also performing this piece on a guest visit to Copenhagen later this month.
  10. But both Naghdi's performances are Saturday matinees and you'll notice that all the matinees are sold out, whoever is dancing - and there are exactly 4 tickets left for Hayward's Monday night performance and lots more than that for nights when Nunez or Osipova dance - don't think you can deduce much from all that!
  11. A couple of interesting things from the Sunday Express review of Peter Schaufuss's Nutcracker - one is the photographs, the other is that apparently this production will be shown at this year's Edinburgh Festival and possibly in London. Hmm...
  12. Interesting that the Nutcracker programme and the Bussell/Fonteyn programme are already available as downloads from the BBC Store - £3.99 and £1.89 respectively, a bit more if you want HD. I hope they'll soon start releasing some of their older programmes too...
  13. FLOSS, I realise this is a personal choice but can you explain what appears to me a drastic undervaluation of Balanchine? To me Agon and Symphony in three Movements and... and... and... are out of sight more valuable than Brouillards or Voluntaries, yes, and some of your Ashton choices as well!
  14. ... but not much of Beriosova and almost nothing of Macleary, unless they've recently found some more?
  15. We had the Hard Nut at Sadler's Wells once, didn't we? 10/12 years ago I'd guess.
  16. He also says he got a few facts wrong in the hardback, which will be corrected in the paperback, scheduled for mid-2017.
  17. Debra Craine has a long piece about Peter Wright in this morning's Times, which includes the news that a paperback version of his book is in preparation, and that he thinks it will be much better as he didn't have time to edit the hardback version properly.
  18. So far as I remember Monica Mason said it was entirely her own idea - almost a 'lightbulb moment'.
  19. AIthough Roslyn Sulcas writes for the New York Times I believe she has been living in London for several years and has often written about McGregor's work .
  20. Does this imply new decor or a recreation of the lovely Kenneth Rowell original, do you think?
  21. I can't remember the exact circumstances but I see I wrote at the time that although Cojocaru and Kobborg were the planned first cast "they withdrew during the last weeks of rehearsal" . Also I see that Invitus Invitam came top of the ballet.co poll in the Best New Production category that year.
  22. No, it was the one Kim Brandstrup made, with Benjamin and Watson - a lovely piece I thought.
  23. The site was down a couple of times yesterday evening so I guess it's a consequence of that.
  24. John Percival, D&D August 1967, p28 (Just been reading it this afternoon!)
