  1. Graham Fletcher runs his ballet associates near the Curve theatre once a month, that might be worth looking into. It's quite a small scheme and it seems quite flexible.
  2. One associate scheme i know of insists on a certain shoe, split sole satin by a specific brand. Teacher at said scheme repeatedly pulled up 2 students I teach for not supporting their feet and rolling etc etc so on my advice they have returned wearing a different brand and now full sole satin... not only has the teacher not noticed that they have changed shoes she's actually praised the improvement in their feet. I personally prefer full sole leather as it offers support and gives the foot something to work against to strengthen, which I think is the most important thing at grade 1/young age.
  3. Abbotts Bromley The school that no one seems to be mentioning I can email you a list of places my students are currently looking at ?
  4. Don't know if they are looking for staff but there is... Wilkes Academy Swindon Dance Box Milton Keynes Steelworks Stoke on Trent Jill Clewes Academy Stoke on Trent BBO Dance seem to be offering a level 3 course
  5. It does mean you have to be careful where the dancer looks though, if they look at you they create a few extra chins
  6. One Ballet picture on the other hand My face is ugly My thighs are fat Why aren't my feet banana like ? I need swayback legs to ever look like a ballerina Can't you make me look taller? This is pointless I'm never going to get in Teenagers are mentally draining!
  7. Teenage girls happy with any image taken ever??
  8. Photo shoots seem to involve a whole heap of counselling!
  9. I haven't seen ENBS or Central applications yet? Are they online now? X
  10. The devellope second fills me with dread when I see it on the list, so far I've only seen it on the elmhurst list- thankfully!
  11. I have taken all audition photos for my students. Advice I had from an ex professional ballerina was to take the photos kneeling as it shows the lines off. Watch for dodgy shadows as it can make knees seem bent and create pot bellies where there are none!
  12. Lisa Howell is amazing, I'm a little bit obsessed with her!
  13. I agree with the hair comment pictures, a lot of my weeknight students arrive either with their hair in ponytails or the buns that their mums dutifully put in before school frizzy and half hanging out (I like to think the messier the hair the more fun they've had at school). They have to get changed from school anyway so I really don't see the difference between putting on leggings and a crop and putting on correct ballet uniform. What I agreed with most is that students should be prepared to take corrections and have a positive attitude, everything else is just visual
  14. I've just made a little poster with the bits I agree with and tweaked to add my own spin. As a teacher I think it's generally good advice probably more geared towards ballet but I think ballet should be given a totally different approach to say street dance where slouching and sullen face seems mandatory.
  15. Sorry Balletnbroke my student wasn't ever asked to make a shopping list. But hopefully you won't be too far off if you do a list of things you want to improve or maybe things she'd like to gain i.e. Better pirouettes, front splits
  16. I will ask my pupil, she was year 6 JA last year but I don't think she had Miss Howarth. If no one come back with anymore info I would do a shopping list of technique she would like to fix and then speak to Miss Howarth and explain that although she didn't understand the homework she has had a guess and done a list of things she wants to improve. It's a useful task anyway as it gives your dd some goals and she has shown willing. Ps if it's the Miss Howarth I'm thinking of, she is lovely she was my course mentor when I was 16
  17. I love it when my box arrives, cheers me up no end! Someone else I know has a period box with special treats to make the time of the month a little brighter

  19. Oh it's just overall confusion as to what being self employed should actually entail! It seems there are a lot of blurred lines regarding when self employed becomes employed and what you can expect of a self employed person. Im intrigued for my own clarity!
  20. Thank you for that Pictures! It is a huge headache, and it seems to be worse in the dancing world because the advice is just not available. My dad was a self employed property renovator for private landlords and he always tells me I'm doing things wrong but his decorating examples just don't seem to have an equivalent in the dance world and HMRC is just far far far too complex, the "are you self employed" quiz permanently rules that I am undefinable! As for uniform I understand I am expected to provide suitable footwear etc but I meant more along the lines of dance school logo t shirts/jumpers etc
  21. Just after a few pointers regarding self employment as a dance teacher I'm unsure whether certain things are standard for self employed people. HMRC talk only in terms of standard businesses and I struggle to find the dance teacher equivalent -Purchasing of set uniform -Amount of notice for holidays? -Amount of holidays allowed? -Unbillable hours for admin jobs -Payment method determined by the school not the teacher -Hours of work cancelled (no payment) when the teacher has turned up to teach I've yet to find the perks in self employment, seems like a huge headache!
