  8. The tickets they released the other day were good stalls and dress circle seats, but as Quintus says they went really quickly. It's obivously a case of just being in the right place at the right time ....
  9. On the seating issue, I was on the right and missed the murders of Elizabeth and Henry on the stairs . In fact, I missed the stairs .....
  10. Yes, I do understand. Maybe if Act 1 were pruned a little (the harlots?) then there would be time for this, and it would certainly add the emotional depth that many people are missing. Am I right that more dancing was added for Jack in 'Alice' the second time around? In that case, who knows? Wednesday was a thought-provoking evening for me, at least - I found myself mulling over a lot of things on the way home - not in the emotional way I often do after other ballets, but in an analytical way. I'm definitely looking forward to my next viewing!
  11. I do understand what you are saying, Sim, and I'm sure that you are right in that a ppd then would have established an emotional depth to the subsequent events. However, I haven't read the book for many years, so I am responding purely to the ballet - I didn't even read the synopsis on the cast list - and for me the narrative was very clear and I did feel sympathy for the creature. Agreed it is not MacMillan, but it shouldn't be - Scarlett is finding his own voice. I enjoyed it far more than I'd expected to, and I'm looking forward to seeing the other cast to see if I feel any differently!
  12. Yes. I think the problem may be that in Act 3 he seems so bent on revenge that it is easy to forget those moments. But for me they're there.
  13. Yes, me too - first when the creature read Victor's journal, then as Dave said when he seemed to be enjoying dancing with William but was then rejected by the boy when he saw the creature's face. And again when the creature realised he'd killed William.... they worked for me. And the end ....
  14. The Mikhailovsky use moving foliage to hide/uncover Myrthe and Giselle. That worked well when we saw it.
  15. Maybe I was just unlucky with the performance I saw at the Kremlin then. But the audience talked all the time, used their mobiles, the corps were very poor and it was a real disappointment. The St P performances were in a different class altogether. We didn't see anything at the Bolshoi this time.
  16. I have just been to St P for the second time - we spent 5 nights there and 1 night in Moscow this month. As others have said it is a fantastic place to visit, quite apart from the ballet. It is different seeing ballet in Russia - in St P the Mariinsky have two theatres, and both are great. The old theatre has no rake in the stalls and it is hard to see from the second row in the dress circle because the boxes are flat. They are also quite cramped. It is worth paying at least £30-£40 which gets you a good seat in thr front row of a box. There is no problem in the new theatre. However the atmosphere is fantastic. The Michailovsky is a real gem - I saw the best performance ever of Giselle there last week - with the full 32 beats. It's a young company and Viktor Lebedev and Anastasia Soboleva are names to look out for. Buy tickets direct from all the theatres online not through an agency as the mark- up is incredible and they all do etickets. Avoid tourist theatres like the Kremlin Palace Theatre in Moscow - the standard is not so good and the audience are largely tourists. Russia is generally cheap and it's easy to get the fast train to Moscow. We booked everything ourselves and got our own visas, and flew in and out of St P which is easy from London. It's a wonderful experience!
