  1. KS Dance - know of six or seven students who have been there , now graduated and gone into a mix of cruise ship dance jobs, dance in holiday resorts abroad and teaching positions. For the Young Dancers Competition, there was also a male ballet dancer who partnered in the pas de deux (but was not actually a competitor himself) who was from KSD and I believe he secured a classical contract abroad following graduation. Chantry Dance is a fairly new course I believe. I really like the company and would probably have looked at it for my DD had it been around then. The associates scheme has been running longer and has a good reputation as far as I know. Certainly it has attracted students from full time vocational schools. They have all the details of fees etc on their website.
  2. Just wanted to wish LinMM and Michelle Richer all the best for their trip to St Petersburg. I hope all goes well, safe journey and have a lovely time.
  3. I echo the advice to take her into a store. My DD is very pale and very unlike me in colouring and we went to Boots for advice. They showed her how to apply products using their own no 7 range, including how to make eyebrows appear. They did her whole face and showed her how to build up the effect for the stage
  4. It was indeed a very lucky escape. Cuts, bruises and a serious but not life threatening knee/leg injury, from which he made a full recovery. The accident was in January when he was 18 years old and away from home on a work experience gap year - so nearly thirty years ago. The driver was prosecuted . I don't think the sight of a boy of similar age to his son being pinned under a bike and his lorry, fully conscious was one he forgot in a hurry.
  5. I'm another one who is always extremely wary of cyclists. Our roads are full of potholes so I sort of assume that they will not keep cycling straight. and in any case there are just as many horses and tractors. Junctions as described above are horrible, as are roundabouts and always bring back horrific memories for me. My brother used to cycle everywhere and stopped at a roundabout to give way to traffic. The lorry saw him and stopped behind him. Then there was a gap in the traffic - my brother knew it was a not a big enough gap for a cyclist - the lorry driver unfortunately did not and tried to pull out onto the roundabout - driving over the top of my brother and his bike in the process. He spent about twenty minutes pinned under the lorry with the bike. I'm glad to say that after an operation and a few months in hospital and a more months of physio he was ok. He heard the lorry accelerate and tried to jump out the way - hence only the pedal had gone through his leg. but those seconds saved his life!
  6. I agree that this thread does not make pleasant reading but I cannot agree on the terms of 'baiting' or 'ganging up'. It does not matter which thread you are on - multiple people will comment on the same post - sometimes in agreement or sometimes in disagreement. It is only natural that on a discussion forum more than once person will want their say. I also agree that the forum is a nicer place when people share their experiences of ballet without fear of retribution. But surely that works both ways. You can share your experiences without being disrespectful or criticising professional dancers, experienced teachers and fellow forum members.
  7. I was caught in a tail back of traffic recently on a very busy A road. When I got to the cause of the delay it was clear that there had been a collision between a car and a cyclist as there was a man lying in the road wearing a cycle helmet with a car stopped in front and behind him. The cyclist was quite clearly alive, talking and laughing with presumably the driver, an anxious looking person who was clearly way more upset than the cyclist himself. I couldn't help wonder if I was the only one with little sympathy for the cyclist - that sounds dreadful I know but he had chosen to cycle on the very busy A road amongst cars, lorries and tractors when dedicated cycle path runs alongside the said road - a wide, flat and smooth cycle path - separate to the road but adjacent. Such an avoidable accident
  8. Are you wanting to stick with IDTA? I ask because the RAD team for the West Midlands is very good and would probably be able to advise you of good schools and teachers local to you. The RAD also offer associates and various workshops in Birmingham, which might be accessible for you. Contact either through the RAD website or if you are on facebook the RAD Midlands and East of England page has direct contact details for the lady for your region. The RAD website also has a search for a teacher facility.
  9. Midlands academy of musical theatre. Advert linked to the stage appeared on my Facebook timeline today. New two year course for aged 17 upwards
  10. I'm glad your DD is enjoying it there. We looked at it for DD several years ago as she knew she was not ready to move from a small village to London life a month or so after her 16th birthday.
  11. Redroofs School in Berkshire Bath Dance College 344 dance school, Bristol (the academy part)
  12. And why when ballet companies tour do I find that any that visit my region all do so within the same month and then nothing again just about all year.
  13. LinMM - I suspect that it is to do with the joint mobility of the lower back that affects your arabesque to the back. I say this only because DDs teacher at vocational school commented that DD's arabesque was not as high as it should be, especially given her flexibility generally. She was sent for assessment and physio and learned it was to do with the lower spine with a knock on effect to the hamstrings. She was given specific exercises to loosen up her lower spine and there was immediate improvement. So I really do suspect that it will be linked to wear and tear on the lumbar region.
  14. so sorry for your son's awful experience. I hope there is more done than a one day exclusion as the school could take the opportunity to talk about bullying, guns and weapons etc, rather than sweeping it under the carpet and pretending it never happened.
  15. I just took the sd card from my camera and went to a print your own photos at Boots or somewhere similar. I could just then select the images I wanted and the number of each one and get them easily.
  16. Harwel, I don't think there is a standard answer as it varies from student to student. The Trinity diploma is part internally assessed by the course provider and moderated by Trinity and part externally assessed ie by Trinity so I think they look at each student on a case by case basis. The performance part is externally assessed and there are criteria that have to be met.
  17. My answer would be clear photos but taken by a parent in a dance school setting is absolutely fine. For my DD, I had a list of all the positions needed and a dance teacher assisted. She told my DD what to do and I took the photo and then she looked in the view window and approved or not each photo for clarity and if it showed DD at her best.
  18. As others have said, jobs are awarded on the basis of an audition. Each company will list its criteria for applicants. Some may state that an applicant must have 3 years formal dance training, others aske for so many years of experience, many specify heights or that you need to be an EU passport holder. You also ask about the completion of a dance diploma if you leave before the end of the academic year. If you are talking about the level 6 Trinity diploma, then it will depend on individual circumstances for if the dancer is able to graduate with the diploma. The diploma requires assessment of technical and performance skills as well as the academic content so it will depend how much assessment has taken place. I would presume academics can be finished away from the school, provided the work is handed in by the appriate deadline. I do know of dancers who have left before the end of the 3 years training and still been able to graduate with the diploma, but likewise I know of a few that have not.
  19. Compulsory at DDs school were 2 x English (syllabus for lang and lit overlap so its not 2 x amount of work), maths, double or triple science (depending on set/ability), a language plus 3 options. You could opt for a 2nd language instead of core ICT. Choice of subject definitely has an impact on amount of time needed out of school. Art and design subjects all seemed to require most hours. Drama for my DDs did not - they understood about their dance activities and neither of them ever had any clashes. Would like to add that , I know that the grading system is changing but I thought the current year 11s were the first year group to take the new GCSEs with the number grades, not the current year 10s as someone else mentioned?
  20. oh that sounds so familiar Pups-mum. In our case they did give advance notification - for the last week of the school holidays. and yes you've guessed it - 8:30 am on the first day back to school. Did not affect us too much as we live in the village and walked to the school then (years ago) but the fact that they closed the road through the village caused chaos with cars and the school buses. In fact thinking about it, they did the same with the main road to the next town a number of years later. My kids got on the bus at 8:15 and reached school at about 10am (its 5 miles) but some of them that morning had 3 hours stuck on school buses.
  21. Its all beyond me too!! Back to original topic, a job ad popped up on my facebook feed today for 'newborn baby cuddler'. For babies waiting to be adopted or as the paperwork is going through.
  22. To be fair, the use of 'stamp out' in his question gives the impression that he is talking about something that needs to be gotten rid of and I think most people asked to sign a petition would be assuming it was to achieve something positive. I also think the term 'suffrage' is not so much in common use. I have never really seen or heard it used on its own - but always coupled with 'movement' so 'suffrage movement' or even more so women's suffrage movement or talk of suffragettes. I think in the circumstances and manner these women were approached, its quite possible that they misheard or misunderstood the question, doubting what they thought it meant because of the context. Though I still hope those shown in the video are the minority.
  23. handwritten note/card to go in with the parcel. We used to put in a photo or postcard with messages from all of us and DD kept them all.
  24. A friends DD is wanting to do dance at university. Among those they are looking at are LIPA, Arden Theatre College (Manchester), Leeds Beckett and Derby. She mentioned that they are attending a UCAS event in Manchester in October which includes dance and guidance on courses. This is the event that is closest to them but they do them apparently in lots of different towns and cities. Perhaps a search for UCAS events on google might help you find one nearer to you
